Use MCP to orchestrate the capture, but let Apple’s Simulator tool do the actual work. The reliable path is to install Xcode and its command-line tools, boot the intended simulator, then have an MCP screenshot tool invoke xcrun simctl io <device> screenshot <file>. For one booted simulator, the shortest working command is:

What MCP is doing in an iOS screenshot workflow
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an orchestration layer. An MCP server can expose a tool such as take_screenshot, accept a simulator identifier and output settings, and then run Apple’s Simulator command-line utility. The image normally comes from xcrun simctl io, not from MCP itself.

Prerequisites
- A Mac with Xcode installed.
- Xcode’s command-line tools available and Xcode selected as the active developer directory. Apple’s command-line tools include
simctl. - An iOS Simulator device created in Xcode.
- An MCP client and an MCP server that expose a simulator screenshot tool.
- A destination directory writable by the MCP process.
Use the same Xcode installation that owns the simulator runtime. If xcrun or simctl cannot be found, fix the developer-directory selection before changing MCP settings.
Capture a screenshot manually first
Testing the native command removes MCP from the failure path. Open Terminal and list devices:
xcrun simctl list devicesFind a device whose state is Booted. With exactly one running simulator, capture it to a writable path:

xcrun simctl io booted screenshot screenshot.pngThe command writes a PNG by default in the documented workflow. Use an absolute path when working from an MCP server or another process:
xcrun simctl io booted screenshot /tmp/ios-simulator.pngCheck that the file exists and can be opened. If this direct command fails, an MCP client will not fix the underlying problem; resolve the simulator, Xcode or filesystem issue first.
Capture through an MCP server
1. Boot the intended simulator
In Xcode, open Window → Devices and Simulators, select a simulator and start it. You can also use the Simulator application. Wait until the device is fully usable, then launch your app and navigate to the screen you want.

2. Identify the target
For a single running device, an MCP tool may accept booted or discover the booted simulator automatically. When more than one simulator is running, select a device explicitly. Copy its UDID from:
xcrun simctl list devicesUsing a UDID is safer for repeatable automation because booted is ambiguous when several devices are active.
3. Call the server’s screenshot tool
Public MCP implementations commonly expose arguments for a simulator UDID, output path and image settings. Exact parameter names differ, so inspect the server’s tool schema in your MCP client. A typical request conceptually contains:
- Device:
bootedor a specific UDID. - Output: an absolute filename writable by the server.
- Format: PNG by default, or another format if the implementation supports it.
- Display: internal or external display where supported.
- Mask policy: handling for non-rectangular displays where supported.
The server then invokes the equivalent of:
xcrun simctl io <udid> screenshot /absolute/path/screenshot.png4. Verify the result returned by MCP
Some servers return image bytes to the MCP client; others only write a file and return its path. Confirm which behavior your implementation uses. A successful tool response should identify the output location and should not be treated as proof that the image contains the intended app screen—open the file and verify the state.
Output formats and display options
PNG is the normal format for the documented simctl workflow. Individual MCP servers can add conversions or expose additional choices such as JPEG, TIFF, BMP and GIF. Those choices are server-specific and should not be assumed to be accepted by Apple’s command in the same way.

Some implementations also expose internal versus external display selection and mask policies named ignored, alpha or black for non-rectangular displays. If your server offers these controls, choose them explicitly when the simulator has a display cutout or another non-rectangular area. If it does not, the server’s default behavior applies.

Handling more than one simulator
booted is convenient only when one running simulator is the intended target. With multiple devices, pass the selected device name or, preferably, its UDID to MCP. A repeatable shell check is:
xcrun simctl list devicesThen substitute the identifier:
xcrun simctl io 01234567-89AB-CDEF-0123-456789ABCDEF screenshot /tmp/iphone.pngThe identifier above is illustrative syntax; use the real UDID printed on your machine. If a UDID fails, verify that the device still exists, that it is fully booted, and that you have not deleted or recreated the simulator since saving the identifier.
Reliable automation pattern
- Start the simulator and wait for the home screen or your app to be responsive.
- Launch the app and put it in a deterministic state. Avoid capturing during an animation, install, permission prompt or first-run flow unless that is the subject of the test.
- Ask MCP to target a UDID rather than relying on
bootedwhen your machine runs multiple devices. - Write to a unique, absolute output path. Include the test name or timestamp in the filename.
- Check the tool response and the file itself. Treat a path-only response as a delivery confirmation, not visual validation.
- Archive the image with the simulator model, iOS runtime and app build metadata if the screenshot is used for regression evidence.
For parallel jobs, assign one simulator and one output directory to each job. Do not let two MCP calls overwrite the same filename, and avoid using an unqualified booted target in parallel runs.

“xcrun: command not found” or “simctl unavailable”
Xcode or its command-line tools are not installed, or the active developer directory points elsewhere. Install Xcode, then select it as the active developer directory and retry xcrun simctl list devices. The command-line tools that include simctl ship with Xcode.
The MCP tool cannot find a simulator
Run xcrun simctl list devices and confirm that the requested device exists and is Booted. Replace a stale UDID, or use booted when exactly one simulator is running.
The command works manually but MCP fails
Compare the MCP process environment with your interactive shell. The server may use a different PATH or developer directory, may run under another macOS account, or may not have permission to write the requested directory. Use an absolute output path and test that path with the same account or launch context used by the MCP server.

The image is missing, empty or from the wrong device
Wait for the simulator to finish booting and for the app to reach its intended screen. With multiple devices, replace booted with the correct UDID. Check whether another process overwrote the filename.
A format, display or mask argument is rejected
Those options depend on the MCP implementation. Read its tool schema and use only the enumerated values it exposes. PNG remains the safest baseline because it is the normal native output.
Permission denied or no file at the returned path
Choose a directory writable by the MCP process, not merely by your login shell. Prefer an absolute path, remove an existing conflicting path when appropriate, and verify macOS filesystem permissions.

A native simulator capture is local: network latency is not part of simctl itself. The practical delays are simulator boot time, app startup and any MCP-server overhead. Keep a simulator warm for a batch, but reset app state deliberately when test isolation matters.
PNG is lossless and predictable for visual tests, while a server-provided JPEG option can reduce file size at the cost of compression artifacts. Do not compare screenshots across different simulator scales or display targets without controlling those variables.

There is no separate Apple screenshot charge. Your costs are the Mac, Xcode and whatever MCP client or server deployment you operate. A server may add its own limits or storage behavior; those policies are not defined by simctl and must be checked in that server’s documentation.

Can MCP capture a physical iPhone with this command?
This workflow targets iOS Simulator devices managed by Xcode. A physical-device workflow requires different tooling and is not established by the simctl screenshot command described here.
Should I use a device name or a UDID?
Use a UDID for repeatable automation, especially when multiple simulators are booted. Use booted only when one running simulator is unambiguously the target.
