Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The “Failed to upload” message on Twitter—now X—can mean a bad or oversized file, unsupported video encoding, a broken connection, app or browser data, permissions, or an X-side account/service problem. Start by saving the draft, testing a small file, switching networks or access routes, and re-exporting any failing video as an H.264 MP4 with AAC audio.
Identify where the failure occurs
Notice the exact stage of failure:
- Media cannot be selected: check permissions, local storage, gallery indexing, or browser access.
- Upload stalls or fails: investigate the file, connection, VPN, or processing format.
- Media appears but the post will not send: test the caption, session, extensions, and account state.
- Avatar or header fails: use the separate profile-image requirements below.
- Media Studio fails: its limits and processing rules are different from ordinary X uploads.
Before logging out, removing an account, clearing app data, or reinstalling, copy the post text or save it as a draft. Those actions can remove unsent drafts.
Check the media against X’s limits
Ordinary web video uploads
X currently documents these limits for uploads through the website. They vary by account type and do not describe Media Studio.
| Account | Duration and size | Other web limits |
|---|---|---|
| Non-Premium | Up to 140 seconds and 512 MB | 32×32 minimum; maximum 1920×1200 or 1200×1900; aspect ratio 1:2.39 to 2.39:1; maximum 40 fps and 25 Mbps |
| Premium | Under four hours at 1080p, up to 16 GB. Videos over two hours and under four hours must be 720p. |
See X’s current video requirements for account and platform qualifications.

Media Studio is separate
For Media Studio, X documents an 8 GB maximum video file, MP4 or MOV containers, H.264/AVC video, AAC-LC mono or stereo audio, and a 60 fps maximum. Images can be up to 20 MB and 8192×8192 pixels. Premium Media Studio videos are shorter than two hours at 1080p, or over two hours and under approximately three hours at 720p, subject to the 8 GB limit. Media Studio access is limited to verified subscribers, and these specifications do not apply to every desktop, mobile, or API upload. Details are in the Media Studio FAQ.
Photos, GIFs, and multiple attachments
A post can contain up to four total media items, including combinations of photos, a GIF, or a video. X does not state one universal post-photo size limit in the cited posting guidance, so do not apply the 2 MB profile-photo rule to ordinary attachments.

Fast troubleshooting sequence
- Protect the draft. Copy the text and, if possible, save the post.
- Try a known-good file. A recent small photo or short video distinguishes a file-specific failure from a route-wide problem.
- Change the connection. Switch Wi-Fi and cellular data and temporarily disable a VPN or restrictive proxy.
- Change the access route. Use the official X app if the browser fails, or X.com in a current browser if the app fails.
- Validate the media. Check duration, dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, file size, and codec.
- Retry one item. Remove the media and attach it again rather than testing a large batch.
- Reset local state. Clear relevant storage, update the app or browser, and reinstall only after protecting drafts.
Fixes for desktop browsers
- Open X.com in a private or incognito window, sign in, and retry.
- If it works there, disable extensions one at a time—especially ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, download managers, and user-agent modifiers.
- Update Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, or another current Chromium/WebKit browser. X supports current versions and browsers from the previous year; older or modified browsers may lose functionality. See X’s supported-browser guidance.
- Clear X-related cookies and cached site data, then sign in again. Clearing cookies can sign you out.
- Disable a VPN or corporate security proxy temporarily and try another supported browser.
- Revoke unnecessary third-party account connections if the account behaves abnormally.
A successful test shows a media thumbnail in the composer and lets the post proceed without the error. If private browsing also fails, an extension or stale cookie is less likely; test the file, network, app, and account next. X’s broader checklist is at X troubleshooting.
Fixes for Android
- Open Android’s app permissions and allow X access to photos and videos; grant camera or microphone access when the feature requires it.
- Check free device storage. If the gallery shows a cloud-only item, download the original locally first.
- Restart the phone, check the connection, and disable a VPN temporarily.
- Update X and Android.
- Clear X’s cache or app data. Clearing data normally requires signing in again, so protect drafts and keep your verification method available.
- Log out and back in, then reinstall the official app if needed.
- Retry at X.com in a supported browser.
X’s instructions cover Android troubleshooting and Android permissions. If X cannot see the item at all, permissions, gallery indexing, cloud availability, or storage is more likely than an upload rejection.

Fixes for iPhone and iPad
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → X and grant the required photo access.
- Download the original from iCloud or another cloud service so it is stored on the device.
- Check free storage, restart the device, test Wi-Fi and cellular data, and disable a VPN temporarily.
- Update iOS/iPadOS and X. Devices on iOS 13.7 or lower may not receive newer X app versions.
- In X, open Profile menu → Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Storage, then use Clear media storage or Clear web storage.
- Remove and re-add the account, or reinstall X, only after saving drafts and ensuring you have a login verification or backup code.
- Try X.com in Safari or another supported browser.
X documents these storage controls and draft warnings in its iOS app guide and iOS troubleshooting guide. Menu labels can differ slightly by iOS and app version.
Repair a video that repeatedly fails
MP4 is only a container; a file can still fail if its codec, bitrate, frame rate, audio, or metadata is unusual. Re-export the video with this practical baseline:

- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- Container: MP4
- Video: H.264/AVC
- Audio: AAC-LC
- Bitrate: moderate rather than the camera’s highest setting
- Dimensions and frame rate: reduce them if the file is near a limit or processing stalls
Lower bitrate reduces size but can reduce image quality; lower resolution softens detail; lower frame rate makes motion less smooth. Re-exporting can remove problematic metadata, extra audio tracks, HDR, captions, or edit information. Export a short sample from the same source first: if it works, duration, size, encoding complexity, or processing is the likely trigger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If processing is stuck at 5%
Media Studio processing can take approximately 30 minutes. X specifically identifies some MOV files as prone to remaining at 5% and eventually showing “Upload failed.” Do not wait indefinitely: if progress has not changed for a substantial period, cancel, re-export as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, and retry on a stable connection. Lowering bitrate is X’s stated way to reduce file size.

When only profile images fail
Profile photos and headers use separate rules. X supports JPEG, GIF, and PNG profile images up to 2 MB; it recommends 400×400 pixels for a profile image and 1500×500 for a header. Upload through X.com or an official iOS/Android app, then click or tap Apply. Trying another current browser can resolve browser-specific failures. See X’s profile-photo guidance.
When the media uploads but the post will not send
- Save the caption separately and remove, then reattach, the media.
- Try a short test caption with one media item.
- Check that the post does not exceed four total media items or contain an unusually large combination.
- Test a post without media. If that also fails, log out and back in, disable extensions and VPN, and try the official app or another current browser.
A post without media succeeding points to the attachment set or processing; a post without media failing points more toward session, account, browser, network, or X-side trouble.
Use controlled tests to isolate the cause
| Test result | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| One small photo fails on both app and web | Account, network, or possible X-side problem |
| Small photo works but one video fails | Video codec, size, duration, bitrate, or processing |
| App fails but browser works | App cache, permissions, version, or device state |
| Browser fails but app works | Browser cache, cookies, extension, or compatibility |
| Cellular works but Wi-Fi fails | Router, DNS, firewall, VPN, or network filtering |
| Another account works on the same device | Account-specific restriction or session issue |
| Another device works on the same network | Device, app, or browser issue |
If every controlled test fails across files, devices, and networks, treat it as a possible service-side or account-specific problem rather than endlessly retrying. Contact X Help with the exact error, device and operating-system versions, app or browser version, media type and size, duration and format, and the tests that succeeded or failed. Do not give your credentials to unofficial upload “fixer” services.
