Check OpenAI’s status page first, then try a private browsing window and a different network. If ChatGPT works on cellular data but not work or school Wi-Fi, the network administrator may need to allow its secure WebSocket connection.
Try these quick fixes first
- Check OpenAI Status. Open status.openai.com and look at ChatGPT specifically. Check for an active incident or a service that is still recovering. The page reports aggregate availability, so no listed incident does not rule out a regional, account-specific, or network-specific problem.
- Refresh, then retry in a new chat. If a response is stuck, click Stop generating and then Regenerate. For a hard refresh in most browsers, press
Ctrl + Shift + Ron Windows or Linux, orCmd + Shift + Ron macOS. You can also wait briefly before resending the prompt. - Try a private or incognito window. This helps distinguish a browser extension or existing site session from a broader connection issue.
- Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, secure DNS, or web-protection filters. Reload ChatGPT and test again. Treat this as a short diagnostic, not a recommendation to leave security features off; managed-device users should follow their organization’s policy.
- Switch networks. If possible, try cellular data instead of Wi-Fi, or another trusted network. This is one of the quickest ways to tell whether a router or network policy is involved.
- Restart the browser or app. If needed, restart the device. Avoid reinstalling the app or changing DNS until simpler tests point to a local problem.
OpenAI recommends refreshing, starting a new chat, trying private browsing, and checking extensions and network filters for connection errors. See its ChatGPT error troubleshooting guidance.
What a ChatGPT network error means
“A network error occurred” does not identify one specific fault. It means ChatGPT could not maintain a reliable connection while loading, sending a prompt, or receiving a response. The same underlying issue can appear as a response that stops halfway, repeated disconnects, a blank page, an endless spinner, or “An error occurred while connecting to the websocket.”
It may also be a service incident, a browser session or extension, a VPN or proxy, or a firewall blocking part of the connection. If text chat works but uploads or voice fail, the affected feature may use a different network path or be subject to a separate restriction.

Use the symptoms to narrow down the cause

Fix browser-only connection problems
Check extensions and blockers
Ad blockers, tracker and script blockers, cookie managers, privacy extensions, and browser security tools can interfere with page scripts or the connection. If ChatGPT works in a private window, disable extensions in your normal browser and re-enable them individually until you identify a conflict. A clean browser profile or another browser is a useful comparison.
Clear site data and sign in again
A stale or corrupted session can survive a normal reload. Clear the site data and cookies for ChatGPT, then sign out and back in. This can remove site preferences and require you to authenticate again; it does not by itself establish that an account’s chat history has been deleted. For login or verification failures, OpenAI also advises allowing cookies and JavaScript for relevant OpenAI and ChatGPT domains and temporarily testing without blockers. Compare browsers and sessions
If a private window does not help, try another browser or a clean browser profile. If the same failure occurs everywhere on one device, the cause is less likely to be one browser extension; test a different device or network before changing system settings.

Understand and troubleshoot WebSocket errors
A page can load even when the live connection used for conversation updates or response streaming is blocked. ChatGPT’s secure WebSocket destination is wss://ws.chatgpt.com. OpenAI’s network guidance says this traffic uses TCP port 443 and requires the proxy or firewall to permit the standard WebSocket upgrade and persistent connection.
If you see a WebSocket error, try another network. If that resolves it, or the problem happens only on workplace or school Wi-Fi, an end user usually cannot fix the policy from inside ChatGPT. Ask the network administrator to review proxy behavior, TLS inspection or SSL decryption, URL filtering, idle timeouts, and message or frame-size limits. The administrator should use OpenAI’s current network recommendations for ChatGPT on web and apps.
Check uploads, downloads, and voice separately
File uploads and generated downloads
If ordinary text chats work but file transfers fail, the issue may be specific to the file or access to OpenAI’s file-hosting domains. OpenAI’s network guidance identifies *.oaiusercontent.com—including files.oaiusercontent.com—as relevant to file access. On managed Wi-Fi, ask IT to check those domains rather than trying to bypass the organization’s controls. You can also test another file and, for diagnosis, try without a VPN or web filter if policy permits. Generated-file availability and product limits can change, so a failed download is not automatically evidence of a network fault.

Voice interruptions
If text chat works but voice disconnects, test another network and ask a network administrator to review the current voice-related requirements in OpenAI’s network guidance. A rule that permits ordinary page loading may still interfere with traffic needed by a particular feature.
Fix connection problems in the mobile or desktop app
- Force-close the app and open it again.
- Install the latest available app update from its official source.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or network filter, if you are permitted to change it.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, where available.
- Sign out and back in, then restart the device if the issue continues.
- Test ChatGPT in a mobile browser to see whether the problem is limited to the app.
- Reinstall only as a later step, after confirming you can sign back in and have access to any required authentication method.
OpenAI’s network recommendations include updating the app, disabling VPNs for testing, and signing out and back in; they also describe app-specific troubleshooting such as reinstalling the iOS app.
What to do on work, school, or public Wi-Fi
Managed networks may block ChatGPT domains or interrupt persistent connections. Public Wi-Fi may also require you to complete a captive-portal sign-in before other sites connect normally. If the problem is limited to a managed network, contact its administrator rather than trying to bypass its security controls.

Ask IT to consult OpenAI’s current network recommendations. The guidance lists domains used for ChatGPT, authentication, content, and related services, and can change; it should be treated as the authoritative, current allowlist rather than relying on a copied list in an article. The administrator may need to permit relevant HTTPS traffic over TCP port 443 and secure WebSocket upgrades, and review proxy, TLS-inspection, URL-filtering, and connection-timeout policies. For file access, the guidance includes *.oaiusercontent.com.
Optional advanced troubleshooting
Use these steps only if simpler comparisons suggest a local router or DNS issue. Flushing DNS will not fix an OpenAI incident, a blocked WebSocket, or a firewall policy. Commands depend on the operating system and DNS service, and may require administrator privileges.
Flush the local DNS cache
- Windows Command Prompt:

sudo resolvectl flush-caches
Restart the router only when appropriate
A router restart can help with a temporary local connection or DNS fault, but it interrupts other people using the network. Do not change DNS providers solely because ChatGPT shows a network error; first compare ChatGPT on another network. Reinstalling an app, buying a VPN, or replacing a router is not a useful first diagnostic step.

When to contact OpenAI Support
Contact OpenAI Support if the error persists across browsers and devices, occurs on an unrelated network, and is not explained by a status incident or network policy—or if it is tied to a particular account, feature, model, or conversation. Before reaching out, record the exact error and enough context for someone to reproduce it.
- Date and time of the failure, including time zone.
- Browser and version, operating system, or ChatGPT app version.
- The model or feature involved and whether a new chat has the same problem.
- Whether it works in a private window, another browser, another device, or another network.
- The conversation URL or ID, when relevant, and a screenshot.
- Browser-console errors and a HAR file captured while reproducing the problem, if possible.
OpenAI’s error troubleshooting guide explains the diagnostics requested for persistent loading and connection problems. Do not include passwords or other sensitive information in diagnostic material.
