Overview

Vecto traces logos, icons, illustrations, scans and photos into SVG. For ordinary artwork, the output is intended to be editable; photo tracing instead produces stylized, posterized vector art with a chosen number of colors. This is a focused conversion tool, not a general-purpose graphics editor.

Processing runs on the user's computer, works offline and needs no account. That makes Vecto a sound choice for sensitive images or repeat conversion work without an online service in the middle.

Key features

Vecto builds a connected mosaic, fitting each shared boundary once to avoid gaps or overlaps between neighboring shapes. It can express straight edges as straight lines and circles as mathematically exact arcs. Sub-pixel precision places boundaries between pixels rather than snapping them to the pixel grid. Together, these choices favor clean geometry in logos and icons over a merely approximate trace.

It accepts PNG, JPG, BMP and GIF, preserves transparency, and offers a live side-by-side preview with synced zoom. Users can export SVG or copy it to the clipboard for Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity or cutting software. For photo conversion, the maker recommends using the highest-resolution source available; the chosen color count controls the posterized look.

The command-line tool supports tracing, batch jobs and benchmarking on Linux and macOS. The maker also says identical inputs produce byte-identical SVGs, a useful property for repeatable workflows.

Pricing

The Free open-source build costs 0.00 USD per free, with no trial clock or watermark, and uses the MIT license. It is the natural starting point for anyone who wants to try Vecto or build it themselves, with no subscription commitment.

The Microsoft Store plan costs 7.99 USD per once and includes a one-click install and automatic updates for Windows 10 / 11. It fits Windows users who prefer a packaged installation and updates; the free build remains the lower-cost option, while the Store purchase's stated benefits are convenience rather than extra tracing capabilities. There is no free trial.

Platforms

Vecto is desktop software, but the graphical app is Windows-only. Linux and macOS downloads are command-line tools, so users on those systems should choose it only if a CLI workflow suits them. A cross-platform app is on the roadmap, but it is not the current offering.

Who it's for

Vecto is best for designers, developers and production users converting logos, icons, illustrations or scans into editable SVGs, especially when local processing, precise boundaries or repeatable output matter. Batch support adds value for recurring jobs. It is a weaker fit for people who need a graphical app on Linux or macOS, or who want a broad image-editing suite.

Pros and cons

Pros: Connected geometry and sub-pixel placement help avoid gaps and pixel-grid artifacts.
Pros: Local, offline processing without an account suits private images.
Pros: The MIT-licensed build is free, unwatermarked and has no trial clock.
Cons: Only Windows has a graphical app; Linux and macOS users must work in the command line.
Cons: Photo tracing is posterized rather than a general-purpose photo editing workflow.

Alternatives

Consider VTracer if you want a free, open-source option across desktop systems, web and self-hosted use. Choose AI Vectorizer if a web or API workflow suits you and its Free plan's two Classic conversions per rolling 24 hours, 15 MB file limit, watermarked SVG exports and 48-hour retention are acceptable. Vectorization.eu is another web and API option, with a free online tool that requires no registration and a free trial.

Vectorizer is a web option whose free plan handles up to 20 files at once without registration and deletes data after one hour. Pick Front-End SVGConverter if browser-based conversion without a backend server is the priority; it accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP and WebP. EdgeSVG and Vectorizer.AI are also alternatives. AutoTrace is a free option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Vecto for local, offline raster-to-SVG conversion when clean geometry and an editable result matter, particularly if you use Windows or are comfortable with command-line tools. Its free MIT-licensed build is a substantial reason to try it. Look elsewhere if you need a graphical app on Linux or macOS.
