Overview

Synology Photos is a photo and video library manager for people who own a Synology NAS and want their collection stored there. It suits households and individuals looking for mobile backup, album organization, and controlled sharing; it is a poor fit if you want a standalone cloud photo service.

Key features

Backup and organization

The mobile app can automatically back up photos and videos to a Synology NAS, making it useful as an ongoing home-library workflow rather than just a place to browse. Custom and conditional albums, automatic grouping, and face and object recognition offer several ways to organize a large collection. Recognition is limited to certain NAS models, so check compatibility before relying on it. Face search is supported.

Sharing and collaboration

Individual photos, videos, and albums can be shared by link with a password or an expiration date. Shared Space lets selected users collaborate, with access and editing rights controlled at folder level. Those controls suit family or small-group libraries, though they depend on the NAS owner managing shared folders.

Formats and previews

Original-quality storage and RAW files are supported. HEIC and HEVC previews, along with compressed video playback, require Synology Image Assistant. That extra requirement matters if those formats are central to your library. Drag-and-drop uploads are capped at 5,000 files per upload.

Pricing

Synology Photos is free, with no paid premium tiers and no free trial. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and the Synology Photos plan costs 0.00 USD per free; both require a Synology NAS. The price is appealing if you already own compatible hardware, but it is not a zero-cost substitute for the NAS itself.

Platforms

Synology Photos supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, Windows, and an extension. The mobile app requires iOS 16 or above or Android 11 or above. TV apps support Apple TV and Android TV; for web use, Synology recommends Chrome and Safari. A desktop app is supported.

Who it's for

Choose Synology Photos if you want to keep a photo and video collection on your own Synology NAS, back it up from mobile devices, and share selected albums or files with controlled access. It makes most sense for existing NAS owners who can confirm their model supports the features they need. Look elsewhere if you need storage without buying or maintaining a Synology NAS, or if your workflow depends on HEIC/HEVC previews without Image Assistant.

Pros and cons

Pro: Mobile automatic backup covers both photos and videos, keeping the library on the NAS.
Pro: Link passwords and expiration dates, plus folder-level collaboration rights, give owners useful control over sharing.
Pro: Original-quality and RAW support serve users with demanding archives.
Con: A Synology NAS is required, so the free software is not a standalone storage service.
Con: Recognition works only on certain NAS models, and HEIC/HEVC previews or compressed video need Synology Image Assistant.
Con: Drag-and-drop uploads cannot exceed 5,000 files at a time.

Alternatives

Google Cloud Storage is a better direction when you need a cloud storage service with API, Linux, macOS, web, or Windows access rather than a NAS-based photo manager; its pricing is usage-based and varies by storage class and bucket location.

Azure Storage Mover fits migration work between on-premises systems and Azure or AWS to Azure, rather than browsing and sharing a personal photo library. Its capabilities carry no software charge, though standard storage, transaction, and networking charges apply.

Cloudsfer is worth considering for web-based migration jobs: its Free Tier includes 1GB, while Essential costs 100.00 USD per month for 100GB, with $1.20 per GB overage and one parallel job.

NetApp Data Migrator is another migration-focused option.

Synology Active Backup for SaaS is the closer fit for backing up Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace from a Synology NAS; it is a free add-on with no software license required.

StoneFly Migrate is another free, web-based migration option.

Atempo Lina is an alternative for Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows environments, with custom pricing.

Data Dynamics StorageX suits storage migration needs where a paid, terabyte-consumption pricing model is preferred.

Verdict

Synology Photos is a strong choice for existing Synology NAS owners who want free, original-quality photo and video management with mobile backup and tightly scoped sharing. Its main advantage is keeping these workflows together around the user's NAS; its decisive drawback is that NAS ownership and model compatibility gate the experience. Choose a different service if you need a standalone hosted library or rely on recognition and previews your NAS setup cannot support.
