Overview

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a website crawler for technical SEO audits, best suited to experienced SEOs and teams that need detailed site-level diagnostics. Its crawl, extraction and automation tools make it a strong fit for audit work; the 500-URL free cap makes the paid licence the practical choice for larger sites.

It checks for more than 300 SEO issues, including broken links, server errors, redirects and problems with page metadata. Automated accessibility checks use the open-source axe rule set against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, adding a useful audit dimension beyond search-focused checks.

Made by Screaming Frog, founded in 2010 and based in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, UK, the product suits practitioners comfortable working with crawl data. For broader comparisons, see SEO Audit Software, SEO Analytics Software, SEO Crawler Software, SEO tools and Technical SEO Software.

Key features

The crawler surfaces broken links and server errors, audits redirects, and flags missing, duplicated or overly long titles and meta descriptions. That breadth is useful when a team needs a structured inventory of common technical and on-page problems, rather than a tool focused only on rankings or keyword tracking.

Integrated Chromium rendering lets it crawl dynamic JavaScript pages, including sites built with Angular, React and Vue.js. This makes it more suitable for modern JavaScript-heavy sites than a crawler that cannot render their page content.

For custom reporting, it extracts page data through CSS Path, XPath or regular expressions, and supports custom JavaScript during a crawl. Connections to Google Analytics, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights APIs add context to crawl data; link metrics can also come through Majestic, Ahrefs and Moz APIs.

Scheduling, command-line automation and exports to destinations including Google Sheets help teams incorporate repeat crawls into their processes. Comparing crawl results or staging against production is also useful for spotting changes and checking work before a release.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and permits up to 500 URLs per crawl, with no signup or email capture. It is a sensible way to audit smaller sites or assess the crawler, but restrictions on saving crawls, configuration and advanced features limit its use for recurring or more demanding work.

The Paid Version costs 279.00 USD per year, billed annually per licence. It removes the fixed crawl limit, subject to allocated memory and storage, and includes a one-year licence that requires renewal. Bulk discounts apply to five or more licences. This is the more appropriate tier for larger crawls and ongoing professional audits; the per-licence term matters for teams equipping multiple users.

The paid licence also includes technical support. Screaming Frog aims to answer support queries within 24 hours during usual business hours, though this is an aim rather than a guaranteed response time.

Platforms

SEO Spider supports Linux, macOS and Windows, giving teams across those desktop operating systems access to the crawler. API access is also listed. Its system-resource-dependent crawl ceiling means a nominally unlimited paid crawl is not independent of the machine and storage available.

Who it's for

This is a strong choice for experienced SEO practitioners, agencies and brands that need technical crawl audits, custom extraction or repeatable crawl workflows. JavaScript rendering and integrations broaden its usefulness for complex sites and teams that want crawl findings alongside analytics or link metrics.

It is less compelling for beginners looking for a guided, lightweight overview: the maker positions it for experienced SEOs, and the restrictions on saving and configuration make the free edition a limited long-term workflow. Teams that need more than one paid licence should account for per-licence annual billing, even with bulk discounts.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad technical checks help identify broken links, server errors, redirects and metadata problems in one crawl.
Pros: Chromium rendering and custom extraction support JavaScript-rich sites and specialized data needs.
Pros: Scheduling, command-line use, exports and crawl comparisons support repeatable audit processes.
Cons: The free edition stops at 500 URLs per crawl and restricts saving, configuration and advanced functions.
Cons: The paid licence renews yearly per licence, and its unlimited crawl allowance remains constrained by memory and storage.
Cons: Technical support is for paid users, so free users do not get that support channel.

Alternatives

Choose Ahrefs if a web-based option with a limited free Site Explorer and Site Audit tier better suits your needs; its free plan is not a substitute for SEO Spider's desktop crawling and extraction workflow.

Netpeak Spider is worth considering if its free tier's 500-URL allowance, five threads and two devices per user better fit your needs on Windows or macOS. Its paid monthly option may also suit readers seeking a different licence structure.

Semrush may suit readers who want a free tier with one demo project and ten reports per day, or a broader SEO platform rather than a dedicated crawler.

Mangools is another freemium alternative for readers comparing SEO software with free and keyword-tracking tiers.

SEO PowerSuite offers a free tier capped at one project, 500 URLs, 1,100 backlinks and one competitor per project; consider it if those allowances match the scale of your work.

SpyFu is an alternative for readers comparing freemium SEO tools with web access and a paid Basic plan.

Moz Pro is worth considering if a paid web or browser-extension option with a free trial and an entry plan for individuals managing one site better suits your preference.

SiteGuru may fit readers who prefer a web-based service with a free trial and a Small plan covering five websites and up to 5,000 pages per site.

Verdict

Choose Screaming Frog SEO Spider if you are an experienced SEO or agency that needs deep technical crawls, JavaScript rendering, flexible extraction and repeatable audits across desktop platforms. Its main advantage is the combination of broad diagnostics and workflow tools; look elsewhere if you need a less technical, web-based service or want to work at scale without paying for an annually renewed licence.
