Overview

Scalar brings several API tools together: a developer portal for guides and interactive references, an SDK generator, a registry for API definitions and related assets, and an API client. Teams can use hosted services or run its open-source tooling in their own environment; custom domains are supported.

The documentation workflow connects closely to GitHub: teams can use repository content, review pull request previews, and publish through a CLI or after a merge. That approach suits teams that already manage API changes in code, but may be less compelling for groups seeking a standalone, non-technical knowledge base.

Scalar says it has received a SOC 2 Type 1 report and maintains GDPR-compliant privacy practices. It says hosted API interfaces use technically required cookies, do not fingerprint custom-domain projects, and do not log request traffic.

Key features

Docs and publishing

Scalar Docs builds interactive API references from OpenAPI documents and combines them with Markdown and MDX guides. GitHub integration can read selected files, open pull requests, and publish after merges. This gives engineering teams a reviewable path from repository changes to published documentation; it also ties the workflow to GitHub and CLI-based publishing.

SDK generation and registry

The SDK Generator creates idiomatic, type-safe client libraries from OpenAPI documents and can publish them through repositories using pull requests. The Registry stores and versions OpenAPI and AsyncAPI documents, JSON Schema, and Spectral rules with Git integration. Together, these features make Scalar more than a portal, particularly for teams that want API specifications and generated clients managed alongside code.

API client and privacy

Scalar API Client is an open-source, offline-first tool for sending requests, organizing collections, and testing APIs from OpenAPI documents. That offline-first design is useful for users who want a client that is not dependent on a hosted workflow. Scalar also says hosted API interfaces do not log request traffic.

Pricing

Scalar has a free plan and paid plans from $150/mo. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows up to 3 APIs, 1 SDK with up to 25 endpoints, 1 editor seat, and 50 Agent Scalar credits. It is a practical starting point for an individual or small evaluation, but the single seat and small API and SDK allowances limit its use for growing teams. Credits reset each billing period and do not roll over.

Pro costs 150.00 USD per month, or $125/month billed yearly ($1,500 per year). It raises the caps to 15 APIs, 1 SDK with up to 100 endpoints, 5 editor seats, and 500 Agent Scalar credits. This is the more suitable tier for a small team collaborating on several APIs, though SDK quantity remains one.

Business costs 600.00 USD per month, or $500/month billed yearly ($6,000 per year). It includes up to 25 APIs, 1 SDK with up to 250 endpoints, 10 editor seats, and 2,000 Agent Scalar credits. The higher limits fit a larger team, but the single-SDK allowance may constrain organizations generating clients for many APIs.

Enterprise has custom pricing and unlimited APIs. It is the tier to consider when the API cap is the main concern; it also includes priority support, SLAs, migration services, and a dedicated Slack or Teams channel.

Platforms

Scalar supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms. Its hosting model is both hosted and self-hosted, giving teams a choice between managed access and running open-source tooling in their own environment.

Who it's for

Scalar is best suited to engineering teams that use OpenAPI, manage documentation in GitHub, and want references, guides, SDK generation, and API assets connected in one workflow. The free plan can serve an individual or early evaluation; Pro and Business provide more editor seats and larger quotas as teams grow. It is a less natural fit for teams that need more than one SDK under a plan or primarily want general-purpose knowledge-base software.

Pros and cons

Pros: Docs combine interactive OpenAPI references with Markdown and MDX guides, and GitHub workflows support pull request review and publishing after merges.
Pros: SDK generation and a versioned registry extend the product beyond documentation into API asset management.
Pros: Hosted and self-hosted options, custom domains, and an offline-first API client give teams flexibility in how they work.
Cons: Every priced plan allows just 1 SDK, even as API and endpoint limits increase.
Cons: The free plan is limited to 1 editor seat, 3 APIs, and 50 non-rollover credits, so it is a constrained option for shared work.
Cons: Business rises to 600.00 USD per month, making its higher quotas a substantial step up from Pro.

Alternatives

For other options, browse API Documentation Tools, Documentation Generators, and Knowledge base software.

Javadoc is a better fit when documentation generated with the JDK is the priority; Javadoc is included with JDK 25, whose binaries are free under Oracle No-Fee Terms and Conditions through September 2028.
Doxygen is a free, open-source alternative with Windows, Linux, and macOS downloads.
Apiary suits public API projects that can use its free tier, which allows unlimited API projects and five participants per project but no team.
ApiNotes offers a free Starter tier for one public API, with a 10-release changelog, up to 25 subscribers, and one team member.
Mihari is an option for personal projects seeking a free plan with monitors, heartbeats, status pages, alerts, and documentation.
Palt offers a free plan with three projects, custom domains, a Try It playground, and basic analytics.
PilotDocs starts at 49.00 USD per month for 10 projects, unlimited API endpoints, and unlimited guides and tutorials.
Stoplight Elements is a free, open-source option for embedding API documentation building blocks into an existing CMS.

Verdict

Choose Scalar if your team works from OpenAPI and wants Git-connected documentation alongside SDK generation, registry management, and API testing, with a self-hosting option. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; the one-SDK cap on priced plans and the free tier’s narrow collaboration limits are the reasons to look elsewhere.
