Overview

Workday Adaptive Planning is a companywide platform for financial and operational planning, with budgeting, forecasting, modeling, and analytics at its core. It is best suited to organizations coordinating plans across teams; its breadth is a strength, but custom pricing and a Salesforce import restriction are worth weighing.

Workday reports average user results of 70% shorter planning cycles and 50% increased productivity. Those figures are reported outcomes, not a promise for every organization.

Key features

Planning and modeling: Budgeting, forecasting, forecast-versus-actual analysis, workforce planning, strategic planning, and financial consolidation cover a wide range of company planning needs. Financial and operational modeling make it relevant beyond finance, though buyers focused on a narrower planning task may not need that scope.
Versions and scenarios: Unlimited versions and what-if scenarios allow teams to compare alternatives without a stated cap, useful when assumptions change frequently.
Data connections: The integration framework connects to any ERP or general ledger and other sources, including Workday, NetSuite, Salesforce, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics GP, spreadsheets, databases, and cloud or on-premises systems. Excel connections can send financial data into reports and presentations with one click. Salesforce imports have specific exclusions: reports, data created through app integrations, and objects requiring a subquery cannot be imported.
Analytics and collaboration: Dashboards, self-service reports, and process guidance support shared planning and review. Workday says its AI can handle routine tasks, make recommendations, and predict future outcomes; advanced analytics supports testing scenarios and models.
Controls and support: An unlimited audit trail, single sign-on, 24/7 support, training resources, and Workday Community access support administration and ongoing use. Named Support Contacts can submit cases around the clock for defects, instance management, customer care, and training.
Deployment: Production and non-production instances are included; secondary instances depend on the contract. APIs support data import and export, model management, and security administration.

Pricing

Pricing is custom: both Workday Adaptive Planning and its Close & Consolidation offering require a quote. The core plan includes any ERP or GL connectivity, unlimited versions, and unlimited what-if scenarios. Close & Consolidation adds close and consolidation to planning, with pricing also varying by quote. Choose the core offering for planning needs; the expanded plan is the fit when financial close and consolidation belong in the same purchase.

A 30-day free trial costs 0.00 USD per free, with no obligation. It includes core planning capabilities, guided walkthroughs, and a step-by-step guide to planning, reporting, and dashboards. There is no free plan, so continued use requires a paid arrangement.

The listed offering includes no data limits, but secondary-instance terms are contract-dependent. The AWS Marketplace option lets customers draw down annual AWS commitments.

Platforms

Workday identifies Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows compatibility, as well as API access. Its technology requirements name supported browsers on Windows and Mac and tablet support for selected pages, including iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy S2 devices.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for organizations that need companywide financial and operational planning, scenario work, integrations across business systems, and shared reporting. Workday says organizations of all sizes can use it, but quote-based pricing makes it important to assess scope and contract terms before committing. A team that needs a straightforward, narrowly scoped tool or a continuing free tier should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros

Unlimited versions, what-if scenarios, and an unlimited audit trail support extensive planning and review without stated caps on those capabilities.
Connections to any ERP or GL, plus Excel and other sources, can bring dispersed financial data into planning workflows.
24/7 support and included production and non-production instances support ongoing operations, with secondary instances subject to contract.

Cons

Custom pricing means buyers need a quote to compare costs or establish a budget.
Salesforce imports exclude reports, app-integration-created data, and objects requiring a subquery, which can complicate workflows relying on those sources.
No free plan is offered; the 30-day trial is temporary.

Alternatives

Verdict

Choose Workday Adaptive Planning when companywide budgeting, forecasting, scenario modeling, and data connectivity need to sit in one planning platform. Its breadth, uncapped versions and scenarios, and operational support make a strong case; look elsewhere if quote-based pricing or the Salesforce import exclusions conflict with your budget or data workflow.
