Overview

Rive is a 2D animation editor for motion graphics and character rigging, with collaborative files and runtimes that carry its content into apps and products. It suits designers and product teams that need animation to run across multiple kinds of devices; its strongest case is the combination of an editor with native runtimes and integrations, while the free tier is tightly capped for ongoing project work.

Key features

Animation and rigging: Rive brings 2D animation, motion graphics and character rigging into one editor. That makes it a candidate for both character-based work and interface or product motion, rather than a tool limited to one animation style.
Runtimes and integrations: Open-source runtimes run Rive files natively. Listed integrations include Web, iOS, macOS, Android, Flutter, React, React Native, Unity and Unreal; runtime categories also include consoles, TVs and vehicles. This breadth is useful when the same animation needs to reach different platforms, though teams should match the specific integration to their target stack.
Export and editor access: Export formats include RIV, REV, MP4, GIF, PNG sequence and WebM. The Editor is a desktop app, with CLI support for macOS, Linux and Windows. The format range supports both native Rive delivery and more conventional rendered outputs.
Collaboration and Agent: Free includes three collaborative files; Cadet and Voyager allow unlimited files, but cap seats at three and 25 respectively. Free and Cadet include an Agent with limits, while Voyager adds advanced models. The higher tiers are better suited to teams that need file capacity or broader collaboration.
Renderer: Rive describes its GPU-accelerated renderer as running at 120fps with perfect quality. That positions it for smooth real-time output, particularly where animation is part of an interactive product.

Pricing

Rive uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs $0 per seat per month and provides Editor access for learning and building, but restricts users to one project, three collaborative files and 10 MB of imported assets. It is a sensible entry point for exploration or small experiments, not a roomy production tier.

Cadet costs $9.00 USD per month (billed Annual view) and allows up to three seats with unlimited files. It is the practical step up for a small team shipping work into apps, products, vehicles or games; the trade-off is its three-seat ceiling and limited Agent. Voyager costs $32.00 USD per month (billed Annual view), raises the cap to 25 seats, keeps unlimited files and includes an Agent with advanced models. It fits larger collaboration needs, though the higher price only makes sense when those expanded team and Agent provisions matter.

Enterprise costs $120.00 USD per month (billed Annual view) and is intended for organizations with $10M+ annual revenue. It adds SSO, SOC2 Type II, dedicated support, a dedicated Slack channel, onboarding, training, a custom S3 bucket and the option to bring Rive to custom platforms, engines, products or hardware. Those provisions target organizations with security, deployment and support requirements beyond a standard team plan.

Platforms

The Editor is available as a desktop app, with CLI support for macOS, Linux and Windows. Rive content runs natively on mobile, desktop and web, as well as consoles, TVs and vehicles. Supported platforms include Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. This spread makes Rive particularly relevant when animation must travel beyond a single app platform.

Who it's for

Rive is best suited to designers and teams building animated product experiences who need character rigging or motion graphics plus a route to deploy across multiple device types. Its integrations and runtimes make it a stronger fit for product delivery than for someone seeking only a narrow, standalone animation workflow. Solo learners can start free, but the project, file and asset caps make Cadet more compelling once work moves into sustained production.

Pros and cons

Pro: Native runtimes, open-source runtime support and a broad integration list give teams several routes to embed Rive content.
Pro: Cadet and Voyager remove the file limit, so growing projects need not be constrained by the Free plan's three collaborative files.
Pro: Enterprise bundles security, onboarding and dedicated support for large organizations, alongside custom runtime options.
Con: Free limits users to one project and 10 MB of imported assets, in addition to three collaborative files, which can quickly constrain production work.
Con: Seat caps are tier-specific: Cadet stops at three and Voyager at 25, so teams larger than that need Enterprise.
Con: The Agent remains limited on Free and Cadet; access to advanced models requires Voyager.

Alternatives

For game-focused animation, compare the Game Animation Software list and 2D Game Animation Software list; the broader Animation Software list is a useful starting point if the project is not specifically game-oriented.

Choose Cascadeur instead if its free non-commercial plan, animation and rigging tools, or paid Indie option better match the project. Pixelorama is a free and open-source option for users who want software available across Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and web. LibreSprite is another free, open-source choice, under GNU General Public License Version 2.

Pro Motion NG may suit users who want a free edition allowing commercial use, with a paid full version also offered. SkelForm is a free, open-source 2D skeletal animator. TexturePacker is worth considering for non-commercial use under its free Essential plan, which is limited to one installation and one concurrent application. OPTPiX SpriteStudio offers a free Starter License for companies with prior-year sales under JPY 10 million, with feature restrictions and attribution requirements. Spriter offers a free version with PNG and spritesheet animation and basic animation features.

Verdict

Choose Rive if you need a capable 2D animation editor tied to runtimes and integrations that can carry work across web, mobile, desktop and other devices. Its free tier is useful for learning, but the one-project and 10 MB asset limits make paid plans the realistic choice for sustained production. Look elsewhere if those deployment routes are unnecessary or if a tighter, more specialized animation tool better fits the work.
