Overview

Passman is a free, open-source password manager that stores credentials on a self-hosted Nextcloud or ownCloud instance. It is best suited to people and teams already operating that stack who want multiple vaults and credential sharing within their own deployment. Its main appeal is control over the hosting environment; that comes with the responsibility of running it.

Key features

Passman supports multiple vaults, and vault keys are never sent to the server. Credentials are encrypted client-side with 256-bit AES, with additional server-side encryption also described by the maker. That model will appeal to users who want credentials tied to their own deployment, but it depends on maintaining the underlying Nextcloud or ownCloud service.

Custom credential fields, a built-in one-time password generator and a password strength analyzer cover practical day-to-day needs. Users can share credentials internally or by link, unless an administrator disables sharing. Business admin controls and employee self-service extend its usefulness to teams.

Imports from KeePass, LastPass, DashLane, ZOHO, Clipperz.is, EnPass and ocPasswords are experimental. That makes Passman a less certain choice for a team migrating a large or established vault. Users can export a vault to CSV or JSON through the interface with the vault password; administrators can back up or restore instances, users or vaults using OCC commands.

The documented REST API v2 covers vaults, credentials and authentication, though its reference is slightly outdated. SQLite, MySQL or MariaDB, and PostgreSQL are supported databases. The project is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Pricing

Passman is free and open source: the Free and open source plan costs 0.00 USD per free. No paid plan or usage limits are stated. That makes it a straightforward option for self-hosters who can provide and maintain the required Nextcloud or ownCloud environment, rather than a hosted service with a subscription tier.

Platforms

Passman supports web access, Android, Chromium-based browsers, Firefox and self-hosted Nextcloud. The native Android app is distributed through Google Play, IzzyOnDroid and F-Droid; the browser extension is described as available for Firefox, Chrome and Safari. Installation is offered through the Nextcloud app store, an archive or Git. The stable listing shows version 2.6.3 for Nextcloud 34 and 35, a compatibility point worth checking before deployment. The project welcomes discussion in its Telegram group and issues and pull requests on GitHub.

Who it's for

Passman fits individuals and teams who already run Nextcloud or ownCloud and prioritize keeping password storage within infrastructure they operate. Vaults, sharing and administrative controls make it more capable than a personal-only credential store. It is not the right fit for someone seeking a standalone hosted password manager or a migration path that is clearly production-ready.

Pros and cons

Pros: Vault keys stay off the server, and credentials receive client-side 256-bit AES encryption, with additional server-side encryption described.
Pros: Multiple vaults, configurable fields, one-time passwords, strength analysis and optional sharing serve both individual and team workflows.
Pros: Free and open source, with CSV or JSON vault export and administrator backup and restore commands.
Cons: The self-hosted Nextcloud or ownCloud requirement rules it out for users who want a ready-made hosted service.
Cons: Experimental imports make migration less predictable, and the API reference is slightly outdated.
Cons: Sharing can be disabled by an administrator, and compatibility should be checked against the stated Nextcloud versions.

Alternatives

For a broader directory of options, see Password Managers. The other linked products address different needs: Horilla is an open-source HR platform with a free self-hosted plan for unlimited users and companies; Toggl Track offers time tracking across mobile, desktop and web platforms, with a limited-user free plan; OtisIO provides workforce operations tools, with a free tier capped at 10 users, one site and 1 GB of storage; TNC Track has a free five-seat plan for team and attendance features; Zoho People offers a free HR plan for five users; Absenca has a free leave-management plan for 15 employees; actiPLANS offers a limited free plan for one to three users; and BookYourPTO has a free Community plan.

Verdict

Choose Passman if you already run Nextcloud or ownCloud and want a free, open-source credential manager whose vaults and sharing operate within that environment. The self-hosted model and layered encryption are its clearest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need standalone hosting or dependable imports for a move from another password manager.
