Overview

PagerDuty coordinates incident response from detection through resolution, with on-call coverage, escalation and workflow automation. It is best suited to teams that need a shared response process across people and tools. Its breadth is a strength, but the free tier’s small user and schedule caps make it a limited fit for expanding operations.

Key features

PagerDuty brings incident response together with real-time collaboration, escalation policies, on-call schedules, stakeholder updates, ChatOps incident actions and post-incident reviews. That combination can help teams manage both the immediate response and follow-up; it is more than a scheduling tool, but teams seeking only basic on-call routing may not need the broader platform.

PagerDuty AIOps is designed to reduce alerts and repetitive work, while PagerDuty Automation standardizes business and technical workflows across people, tools and systems. These capabilities target teams that need repeatable response processes. The Reliability Platform plans also set defined event and AI-action allowances, so capacity matters when choosing a tier.

More than 750 integrations connect PagerDuty with other platforms through email, API or MCP. Featured integrations include AWS, Slack, Anthropic Claude Connector, Microsoft Teams, Cursor and Datadog. This breadth is useful when incident work spans multiple systems. The iOS and Android apps support incident response, schedules and overrides, incident context, and automated response tasks; the app is free to download but requires a PagerDuty account.

Security provisions include continuous system monitoring and FedRAMP authorization at the Low baseline. PagerDuty also reports completed SOC 2 Type II examinations and ISO 27001 certification for its services. Knowledge Base and Community access are included across plans; Standard Email & Chat Support is reserved for Professional and higher plans.

Pricing

PagerDuty uses a freemium model, with a 14-day trial. The entry plan is useful for a small team evaluating incident coordination, but its caps are tight for broader coverage.

Incident Management Free: 0.00 USD per free, billed per year. Includes five users, one on-call schedule, one escalation policy, basic chat, and limited email, push, SMS and phone notifications. It excludes Standard Email & Chat Support.
Incident Management Professional: $25 per user / month monthly, or $21 per user / month annually (16% off); the plan is also shown at 2521.00 USD per month. It adds an enhanced chat experience and post-incident reviews. Add-ons are purchased separately, and support includes Standard Email & Chat Support.
PD Reliability Platform Starter: 2800.00 USD per year for 10 seats, 5,000 Signal Intelligence Events and 5,000 AI actions. This suits teams needing a defined Reliability Platform allowance, though the included seat and event totals are bounded.
PD Reliability Platform Essential: 12000.00 USD per year for 20 seats, 40,000 Signal Intelligence Events and 50,000 AI actions. It offers larger allowances than Starter for teams with greater usage needs.
PD Reliability Platform Ultimate: custom pricing, with 500 seats and 2,000,000 Signal Intelligence Events; the plan summary does not show an AI-actions amount.

For a small team, Free provides a way to establish basic schedules and escalation, but five users and one schedule constrain coverage. Professional raises the per-user cost in exchange for enhanced chat, post-incident reviews and standard support; its add-ons cost extra. Reliability Platform tiers state annual prices and explicit capacity, which makes seat and usage allowances central to the decision.

Platforms

PagerDuty supports Android, iOS, API, self-hosted and web platforms. Mobile response capabilities are useful for on-call staff away from a desktop, though an account is required to use the free-to-download app.

Who it's for

PagerDuty identifies developers, reliability engineers, customer success, security and C-suite teams as users of its platform. It is a stronger fit for organizations coordinating operational incidents across roles and integrations than for a small group that needs only one simple schedule. PagerDuty says 30,000 organizations run on its platform and that it has more than 1,000,000 platform users.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 750 integrations and email, API and MCP connections can bring incident response into a wide range of toolchains.
Pros: Scheduling, escalation, stakeholder updates, ChatOps actions and post-incident reviews support a fuller response cycle.
Pros: Mobile apps include schedules, overrides, incident context and automated response tasks for responders away from a computer.
Cons: Free covers only five users, one on-call schedule and one escalation policy, limiting its usefulness as a team grows.
Cons: Professional add-ons are separate purchases, and the Reliability Platform tiers impose specific seat and event allowances.
Cons: Standard Email & Chat Support is absent from Free, so users on that plan rely on Knowledge Base and Community access.

Alternatives

Choose incident.io if Slack or Microsoft Teams-native incident response and a single-team on-call setup on its free Basic plan better match your needs. Consider PagerTree for a free plan covering up to five users and two teams, or its Pro plan at 15.00 USD per month. TaskCall may suit teams prioritizing unlimited global SMS and voice call notifications, included in its 9.00 USD per month Starter plan.

IncidentRelay is an open-source, self-hosted option with a free plan. MonoDuty offers a free tier in EUR with one user and one on-call schedule. Opsgenie has a free five-user plan and an Essentials plan at 9.45 USD per month, billed annually. Runframe has a free plan for up to five users with Slack incident response and a basic hosted status page. GoAlert is free, open-source software that you host and requires a running PostgreSQL instance.

Verdict

PagerDuty is a strong choice for organizations that need structured on-call response, escalation, integrations and incident follow-through in one platform. Its main advantage is the breadth of its response workflow and connections; its main drawback is the gap between a tightly capped free tier and paid plans whose add-ons or usage allowances require careful budgeting. Choose it when incident coordination across teams and tools is central; look elsewhere if you need only a small, inexpensive schedule or a self-hosted option.
