Overview

OpenRFID Middleware is an open-source integration layer that carries RFID reader events into cloud and on-premise applications. It is best suited to technical teams connecting varied readers to systems such as ERPs, warehouse platforms or cloud APIs. Its broad protocol support and outage handling make it a capable middleware option, though deployment requires a compatible .NET build target and the repository has no releases or packages.

Key features

Reader plugins span LLRP, Impinj Octane, Zebra FX, Identium and Alien, as well as TCP/UDP sockets, serial connections and MQTT. That range is valuable when an installation mixes reader types: one middleware layer can mediate several connection methods instead of forcing the integration around a single protocol.

Filtering tools include sliding-window and shift-based deduplication, RSSI thresholds, antenna masking and EPC pattern rules. These controls let teams reduce duplicate or unwanted reads before dispatch, which can help keep upstream applications focused on useful events. Read-event analytics and movement history are also supported.

For outbound data, the middleware supports HTTP GET, POST, PUT and PATCH, customizable headers, and Liquid or Handlebars templates. Payloads can be JSON, form-data, XML or CSV; WebSockets and MQTT add other communication paths. This flexibility suits integrations with differing endpoint expectations, but teams should expect to configure the mapping between reader events and their receiving systems.

A persistent SQLite WAL queue stores tags during network outages and retransmits them when connectivity returns. Automatic reader reconnection and exponential backoff add resilience to the reader connection itself. Monitoring includes a management dashboard, live tag telemetry, diagnostics, WebSocket logs and an OpenAPI/Swagger REST management API. API key authentication can be enabled with the ApiKey parameter, requiring an X-API-Key header; custom authorization tokens and static keys in HTTP headers are also supported.

Pricing

OpenRFID Middleware is free: its OpenRFID Middleware plan is free and is open-source under the MIT License. There are no paid tiers or plan caps stated. That makes it a sensible option for teams that can operate and adapt middleware themselves, rather than buyers seeking a packaged commercial service with a stated support or release channel.

Platforms

The project is available for API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows environments. Deployment guidance covers local .NET CLI and Docker Compose, with Docker optional. The prerequisite is the .NET 10.0 SDK or a compatible build target of .NET 8.0 or later, a meaningful constraint for teams whose environments cannot accommodate that runtime. Despite the web platform designation, this is middleware for integration rather than a standalone RFID inventory application.

Who it's for

Choose it when your team needs to bridge multiple RFID reader protocols to existing enterprise applications and values control over filtering, payload formatting and outage buffering. It is a weaker fit for organizations that want a ready-to-buy inventory product, a managed service, or a repository offering packaged releases. The project is developed and maintained by RFID Software India Private Limited, whose registered office is in Sector-45, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad reader and transport support accommodates mixed hardware environments.
Pro: Configurable filtering and multiple payload formats give integration teams control over which events reach downstream systems and how they are encoded.
Pro: Persistent outage queuing and reader reconnection help preserve operation through network interruptions.
Con: The .NET prerequisite may rule it out where compatible runtime deployment is impractical.
Con: No releases or packages are shown in the repository, so teams should be prepared to handle deployment from the project rather than install a published package.

Alternatives

For a broader RFID software search, browse the RFID Software directory.

TagMatiks is a better direction for teams seeking a freemium product with Android and iOS support and capped free plans: Wedge Free allows up to 500 scans, while AT Lite Free allows up to 99 active assets. Senitron Athena suits buyers looking for a paid, cross-platform option who are prepared to request a quote. AssetPulse is another paid alternative with a free trial and Android, iOS, web and self-hosted platforms.

RFTrack may suit organizations specifically weighing on-premise perpetual licensing against an on-demand option; both plans have custom pricing. Sensormatic TrueVUE Cloud is a paid choice for retail inventory intelligence, with SaaS and retailer-cloud PaaS deployments. Xemelgo Inventory Management is a paid inventory-management alternative for buyers willing to contact sales. AMG Read Stream is a paid enterprise RFID inventory-tracking option available for cloud or on-premises deployment. Dipole LAMA Middleware is another middleware alternative for web and Windows.

Verdict

OpenRFID Middleware is a strong fit for technically capable teams that need a free, adaptable bridge between diverse RFID readers and enterprise applications. Its filtering, flexible dispatch and persistent outage queue address real integration needs. Look elsewhere if your priority is a packaged release or a turnkey commercial inventory system, or if your environment cannot meet the .NET requirement.
