Overview

OceanBase brings three workload types into one database, with horizontal scaling and multi-region deployment. Built-in Oracle and MySQL compatibility can help teams migrate existing workloads; it is a useful starting point, not a substitute for assessing a migration’s requirements. The distributed design makes more sense for teams prepared to operate multiple servers than for those seeking a single-server production database.

Deployment choices range from open-source Community Edition to self-hosted Enterprise and fully managed OceanBase Cloud across cloud providers. That flexibility lets teams choose how much infrastructure to manage, while the Community Edition’s audit limitation makes the choice of edition consequential for security needs.

Key features

Workloads, compatibility, and connectivity

Combining transactional, analytical, and AI workloads may suit teams seeking to consolidate different kinds of processing in one system. Compatibility with Oracle and MySQL can ease migration, and OceanBase Connector/J provides Java applications with JDBC connections in both OceanBase MySQL and Oracle modes. Kafka integration is documented through Debezium MySQL Connector and Confluent JDBC Sink Connector, but Debezium has no official OceanBase connector, a qualification for teams planning that integration.

Availability and security

OceanBase supports high availability and disaster recovery at node, data-center, and region levels, giving distributed deployments several levels at which to plan resilience. OceanBase Cloud states an SLA commitment of at least 99.99%. Security capabilities include role and permission management, network whitelists, encrypted communication, transparent data encryption, and SQL auditing. Community Edition does not support security audit, so organizations that require that capability should account for the edition difference before choosing it.

The Trust Center lists ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 27018, ISO 9001, and ISO 20000 certifications and completion of the EU Cloud Code of Conduct adherence process. It also describes an L1–L2–L3 after-sales service system providing 24/7 service.

Pricing

OceanBase Community Edition: 0.00 USD per free. This open-source distributed database includes full kernel capabilities, making it a practical choice for learning and for teams that want to run the software themselves without a license charge. The free price does not remove infrastructure costs or the production requirement of at least three servers, and the edition lacks security auditing.

OceanBase Enterprise: custom pricing, with pricing available on request. This commercial, self-hosted offering is positioned for mission-critical deployments. Teams that need a commercial self-hosted option can consider it, but should weigh custom pricing against the free Community Edition and their operational needs.

OceanBase Cloud is a fully managed deployment option across cloud providers, but no plan price is stated here. Its 99.99% SLA commitment may matter to teams comparing managed and self-hosted operation.

Platforms

OceanBase supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. Installation packages are available for Linux distributions including Alibaba Cloud Linux, CentOS, Red Hat, Ubuntu, Debian, and Anolis OS. Docker can be used for deployment on non-Linux systems such as Windows and macOS, but this approach has not been validated at scale. A standalone instance is suitable for learning; production requires at least three servers.

Who it's for

OceanBase is a strong candidate for teams that need transactional, analytical, and AI workloads together, want Oracle or MySQL compatibility for migration, and can operate a distributed system or prefer a managed cloud deployment. It is less suitable for a production workload that must run on one server, or for a Community Edition deployment that requires security auditing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Transactional, analytical, and AI workloads in one database can support consolidation; built-in Oracle and MySQL compatibility can simplify migration.
Pros: Community Edition is open source and priced at 0.00 USD per free, while Enterprise and managed cloud provide alternative deployment choices.
Pros: High availability and disaster recovery span node, data-center, and region levels; OceanBase Cloud states an SLA commitment of at least 99.99%.
Cons: Production requires at least three servers, making OceanBase a poor fit for single-server production environments.
Cons: Community Edition does not support security audit, which may rule it out where that capability is required.
Cons: Docker deployment on Windows and macOS has not been validated at scale, and Debezium lacks an official OceanBase connector.

Alternatives

For a familiar SQL and NoSQL option, consider MySQL, which has a free Community Edition, replication and high-availability components, and connectors.

PgDog is a free, open-source choice for readers seeking a database proxy rather than a database that combines these workloads. PgBouncer is a free, self-hosted alternative. ShardingSphere-Proxy is another free option, with Docker and Helm deployment.

Consider TiCDC, a free option available for API and self-hosted environments; TurbineProxy, which offers free open-source software with no per-query fees; or Amazon RDS, a paid service with a free tier and trial. DBLE is a free, open-source option for Linux and self-hosted use.

Verdict

Choose OceanBase if you need a distributed database for transactional, analytical, and AI workloads, especially when Oracle or MySQL compatibility and flexible deployment matter. Its free Community Edition makes evaluation accessible, but plan for at least three servers in production and look beyond that edition if security auditing is required. Teams that need a single-server production database or a proxy rather than a database should choose another option.
