Overview

Milkie is a paywall SDK for developers building subscription access into Next.js apps. It suits teams that want to control access within their own interfaces and use Stripe for checkout. Its component-based approach is focused, though the three-route backend setup and roadmap gaps make it a narrower choice than a full publishing platform.

Key features

Content gates and metering

The PaywallGate component can protect a page, a section through layout-level gating, or an individual component. That range lets developers put free and paid material side by side, rather than forcing every visitor through the same gate. A metered-paywall example grants limited free access per month, which suits apps that want readers to sample content before subscribing.

Subscriptions and sign-in

Milkie sends users to Stripe's hosted checkout and uses webhooks to update subscription status in real time, so access can respond promptly to subscription changes. It supports entitlement rules and registration walls, and its AuthGate component is for content that requires an account but not a subscription. The maker says it works with NextAuth, Clerk, Lucia, Supabase, and other authentication providers. Paywall interfaces, messaging, and styling are customizable, giving developers room to match the gate to their app.

Implementation and project scope

The quick start requires three API routes: subscription status, checkout, and Stripe webhooks. That is a concrete integration burden for a tool intended to be drop-in, and teams should account for it when estimating work. The README describes protections including callback URL validation, idempotency keys, PII sanitization, webhook signature verification, and email normalization. Multi-tenancy, a developer dashboard, webhook relay service, and multiple subscription tiers remain roadmap items, so Milkie is a better fit for a focused subscription flow than for teams needing those capabilities now.

Pricing

Milkie's sole plan, Milkie, costs 0.00 USD per free and is open source under the MIT license. It includes metered paywalls, registration walls, and entitlement rules, with Stripe as its payment processor. One-time payments are not supported. The free plan avoids a subscription charge, but no quota, seat allowance, trial, or renewal term is stated.

Platforms

Milkie is listed for the web and is specifically designed for Next.js applications. Its integration model is aimed at developers adding gates to an app, not at nontechnical publishers looking for a standalone site-building tool.

Who it's for

Milkie is for developers who want to add subscription checks to selected parts of a Next.js product, combine free previews with premium content, or require sign-in separately from payment. It is less suitable for teams that need one-time payments, multiple subscription tiers, or the roadmap capabilities before they are available.

Pros and cons

Flexible placement: Page-, layout-, and component-level gating supports both whole-section paywalls and mixed free and premium pages.
Sampling option: Monthly metered access provides a way to offer limited free use before a subscription prompt.
Developer control: MIT licensing and customizable gate presentation suit teams that want to adapt the integration to their app.
Setup work: The three required API routes mean the SDK still needs backend integration.
Focused payment scope: Stripe is the processor, and one-time payments are not supported.
Roadmap-dependent breadth: Multi-tenancy, a dashboard, webhook relay, and multiple tiers are not current capabilities.

Alternatives

For a wider selection, browse Paywall Software. Pelcro is worth considering when Android, iOS, or API platforms matter alongside web; its free plan is capped at 100 customers, while Advanced is 450.00 USD per month for up to 2,000 customers. Cleeng may suit teams prioritizing global payment processing, automatic local tax calculation, and fraud and chargeback management; its Merchant Basic plan is free for up to 10k subscribers. codoc is an alternative for selling content through web, API, or extension platforms, with a free plan and a 15% sales fee. Content Credits SDK is another free option for content-credit monetization; its Publisher plan takes a percentage of micropayments. Paperwall is a GPL-3.0 alternative for teams that want an auditable, forkable, self-hosted option. Pigeon has a WordPress demo plan that allows no transactions, while its Publishers plan costs 99.00 USD per month. PostGate offers core monetization features without a monthly subscription, charging a 5% platform fee on successful transactions plus Stripe processing fees. Uix Page Builder is a free WordPress page-builder alternative.

Verdict

Choose Milkie if you are building a Next.js app and want a free, MIT-licensed way to put subscription and sign-in gates exactly where your product needs them. Its flexibility and Stripe-based subscription flow are the main draws; look elsewhere if you need one-time payments, multiple tiers, or a broader publishing platform today.
