Overview

Steam Input is Valve’s controller-configuration system for players and game developers using Steam. It is strongest when a game supports its action-based API, which lets controls map to game actions rather than fixed buttons or keys. For games without that integration, its legacy mappings broaden controller use but can cause input conflicts and mismatched on-screen glyphs.

Key features

Native actions and legacy mappings

With the Steam Input API, developers define actions and action sets, and players bind physical controls to those in-game actions. Games can query the bound controls to show appropriate glyphs. That makes native integration the better route for games that need controller prompts to reflect a player’s actual layout.

Legacy mode works without API integration by translating controller inputs into keyboard, mouse, or gamepad inputs. This gives players a way to configure controls in games that do not support the API, but it is less dependable when a game assumes mouse and gamepad input will not occur at the same time. Glyphs can also disagree with the configured controls.

Broad configuration

The built-in configurator supports Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch Pro, PlayStation 3, and DirectInput gamepads. It recognizes controls such as buttons, sticks, D-pads, triggers, trackballs, trackpads, and gyroscopes, with source modes including mouse, joystick, scroll wheel, touch menu, mouse region, and radial menu. Players can make multiple profiles for a game, switch between them, customize mappings, and share configurations publicly. Developers can designate official configurations; for new titles, Valve recommends bundling Action Manifest Files with game depots rather than using Steam Workshop to manage official layouts.

Developer guidance encourages games to let players customize controls and combine mouse, keyboard, and gamepad input. The API communicates directly with the configurator in Native mode, while Legacy mode does not require it.

Pricing

Steam Input is free. The configurator is built into the Steam client, and developers can use Steamworks, described as a free tools suite for games or software on Steam. There is no paid Steam Input tier to weigh against the free option; its trade-off is the need for game integration to get Native-mode actions and glyph handling.

Platforms

Steam Input is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Players access its settings through the Steam desktop client or Big Picture mode. Steamworks documentation directs users to Steam Support for help.

Who it's for

Steam Input suits players who want to tailor supported controllers to individual games, especially when those games use the API’s named actions. It is also relevant to developers adding controller support, who can define actions and let players customize bindings. Players relying on Legacy mode should be prepared for occasional conflicts or prompts that do not match their layout.

Pros and cons

Pros: Wide controller support and varied input modes let players adapt more than basic button layouts.
Pros: Multiple per-game configurations and public sharing make it possible to keep distinct layouts and exchange them.
Pros: Native actions let games display glyphs suited to the controls actually bound.
Cons: Legacy mappings can trigger glitches when a game mishandles simultaneous mouse and gamepad input.
Cons: Legacy-mode glyphs may not match configured inputs, making prompts less reliable.

Alternatives

For another free controller-mapping option, compare AntiMicroX, a GPL v3 desktop application for Linux and Windows. ControllerBuddy is another free, open-source GPL v3.0 option on Linux and Windows. On Windows, DS4Windows is a free application for Windows 10 or newer that requires .NET 8.0 Desktop Runtime, Visual C++ Redistributable, and the ViGEmBus driver. JoyShockMapper is free on Windows, with Linux users able to build it from source. Joystick Gremlin is a free Windows option.

OmniControl offers a free Windows plan for controller reading, mapping, and tuning, with no time limit or account requirement; its paid Insider plan is 9.99 USD per month and renews monthly until canceled. PadLink has a free Standard plan limited to one active controller and supports Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. ControllerMate is a freemium alternative for macOS.

Verdict

Choose Steam Input if you play on Steam and want flexible controller layouts, particularly in games built around its action API. Its free, built-in configurator and broad device support are compelling; look elsewhere or temper expectations when a game relies on legacy mappings and input prompts must be exact.
