Overview

MembershipWorks is an all-in-one membership system for organizations that need to manage members as well as the events, payments and online services around them. It is strongest for groups that want those functions connected to an existing website; its account-based pricing is less appealing if the organization needs only basic dues collection.

Key features

Administrators can define custom fields, search member records, group members with labels and folders, and email selected groups. A Member Timeline brings notes, payments, donations, renewals and event registration or attendance into one record, which helps staff keep track of a member’s activity beyond billing alone.

The member-facing toolkit includes a portal, members-only content, directories, event calendars and registration, donations, shopping carts, forms, job boards, announcement boards and classified ads. That breadth can replace several separate membership functions for groups that use them; organizations needing only a member list and recurring payments may find much of the system unnecessary.

MembershipWorks integrates with WordPress, Squarespace, Weebly, Wix, Duda, no-code website systems and other HTML5 sites. Stripe, PayPal and Authorize.net handle single transactions and automatic renewals. Xero, QuickBooks desktop and online, and MailChimp are also supported. Organizations syncing multiple MailChimp lists need Premium MailChimp, which costs $9/month.

The maker describes triple data replication, daily backups, layered security, firewalls and administrator access controls. Its terms say customer data is not sold, though service providers may receive it to deliver functions such as email, payment processing, accounting exports and mailing-list synchronization. One-on-one support and training are included at no extra cost on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. US Central Time.

Pricing

The free plan supports up to 50 accounts, but accounts are needed for sign-in, membership billing, profiles, transaction history and members-only access. That cap can constrain even a small group if many members need those functions. There is no free trial; new accounts have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Plan	Price	Account limit
Free	0.00 USD per free	Up to 50 accounts
Up to 300	35.00 USD per month	Up to 300 accounts
Up to 600	59.00 USD per month	Up to 600 accounts
Up to 1,200	95.00 USD per month	Up to 1,200 accounts
Up to 2,500	145.00 USD per month	Up to 2,500 accounts
Up to 5,000	205.00 USD per month	Up to 5,000 accounts
Up to 10,000	259.00 USD per month	Up to 10,000 accounts

All paid prices are billed monthly. The step-up tiers make the cost predictable as an organization grows, but the account ceiling—not the number of administrators—sets the plan size. No feature differences between paid tiers are established, so the practical distinction is capacity. Card payments, self-service renewals and automated dunning support the billing workflow.

Platforms

MembershipWorks is web-based and can integrate with a range of website platforms, including WordPress, Squarespace, Weebly, Wix and Duda. That flexibility suits organizations keeping their current site, but the platform list does not include a dedicated mobile app.

Who it's for

MembershipWorks suits associations, clubs and other membership groups that want records, payment collection, renewals, events and member-facing content in a connected system. It is a particularly credible fit for organizations already using a supported website and needing tools beyond dues management. Groups with more than 50 accounts should budget for a paid plan; those that need only billing or a small member database may prefer a narrower product.

Pros and cons

Pro: The combination of member records, timeline, renewals, events, directories and content gives organizations one system for both administration and member services.
Pro: Website, payment, accounting and email integrations let organizations connect MembershipWorks to existing tools, while one-on-one support and training carry no extra charge.
Con: The free plan's 50-account ceiling applies to people needing core member access and records, so it may be outgrown quickly.
Con: Paid plans scale by account count, which can make broad membership use costly even when an organization has a small administrative team.
Con: There is no free trial, limiting evaluation before commitment, although new accounts have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Alternatives

Raklet is worth comparing for organizations that want mobile apps and a free plan capped at 100 contacts, with one admin seat and 1,250 free emails per month. PushPress may suit groups prioritizing mobile apps and a free plan with unlimited leads, admins, members and staff, though its free plan has transaction fees of 4.99% + .30 CC and 2.89% + .30 ACH.

membermojo is another web-based freemium option, with a free trial and an annual 100-member plan priced at 50.00 GBP per year. Mybers may fit organizations seeking mobile and web access with unlimited members and 500 emails per month on its free forever Starter plan.

Pelcro offers web and mobile platforms and a free plan for 100 customers; its Advanced plan costs 450.00 USD per month for up to 2,000 customers. Clubworx is an alternative to consider for clubs looking for a free plan with up to 20 active members, online booking and payments.

CiviCRM may suit organizations that want a web-based CRM with unlimited users and up to 5,000 contacts on its 15.00 USD per month Starter plan. ChamberMaster is another membership-related option with paid pricing.

Verdict

MembershipWorks is a strong choice for organizations that need membership administration, billing, events and member-facing website functions together, especially when they already use a supported site. Its breadth and included support are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if the 50-account free cap is too small or if account-based paid pricing buys more functionality than the organization needs.
