Overview

MATLAB Grader is a browser-based tool for instructors building and assessing programming assignments, chiefly for MATLAB courses. It suits educators who want automatic grading and course-system integration; its strongest case is a joined-up assignment workflow, while LMS use depends on the right academic license.

Key features

Authoring and assessment

Instructors can create interactive assignments for formative work, quizzes, or exams without installing or maintaining an authoring environment. Problem descriptions support rich text, images, hyperlinks, and LaTeX, useful for setting out technical context and mathematical notation. Pass/fail and weighted grading accommodate different assessment styles, while contextual feedback and attempt histories help explain and review results. Class-level analytics can show which concepts students struggle with, giving instructors a basis for adjusting teaching rather than relying only on individual scores.

Student workflow and LMS integration

Learners can work in MATLAB Online, with submissions and results syncing to MATLAB Grader without another login step. Integrations include Open edX, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, Sakai, and other LTI Advantage-compatible systems. MathWorks certifies the service for LTI 1.3, LTI Advantage, Names and Roles Provisioning Services 2.0, and Assignment and Grade Services 2.0. This is a meaningful fit for courses already organized around an LMS, but the institution must have a qualifying academic license and learners must be enrolled students covered by it.

Privacy and security

For LMS use, MathWorks requires at minimum a learner's role and LMS-assigned LTI user ID, not personally identifiable information. MathWorks says its privacy practices comply with applicable laws including GDPR and CCPA and that it does not sell or rent personal information. Its SOC 3 report covers MATLAB Grader LTI Service within the audited cloud applications system for January 1 through December 31, 2025. These are useful assurances for institutions assessing deployment, though they do not remove the need to check local licensing and governance requirements.

Limits

There is no built-in similarity scoring. Instructors can export student solutions to use with a preferred similarity engine, but that adds a separate step and tool to workflows where comparing submissions is important.

Pricing

MATLAB Grader: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is free with a MATLAB license current under maintenance; LMS integration requires a qualifying academic license. That makes it a strong cost case for eligible courses, but not a standalone route around institutional and learner eligibility rules. Check both license conditions before building an LMS-based course around it.

Platforms

MATLAB Grader is available on the web and supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its browser-based authoring avoids local installation and maintenance; learners can also complete assignments in MATLAB Online.

Who it's for

It is best suited to instructors teaching MATLAB who want to create coding assessments, automate grading, give contextual feedback, and connect results to an LMS. Courses that benefit from reviewing attempt histories and class-level conceptual analytics also have a clear reason to consider it. It is less suitable when built-in similarity scoring is essential or when the institution and enrolled learners do not meet the LMS licensing conditions.

Pros and cons

Pros: Browser-based authoring with rich-text, image, link, and LaTeX support avoids maintaining a separate authoring installation.
Pros: Pass/fail or weighted grading, contextual feedback, attempt histories, and concept analytics support both assessment and course improvement.
Pros: MATLAB Online syncing and broad LTI LMS support reduce friction in course delivery for eligible institutions.
Cons: LMS integration requires a qualifying academic license and covered enrolled students, limiting where the integrated workflow can be used.
Cons: No built-in similarity scoring means instructors must export solutions and use another engine if they need that check.

Alternatives

For broader course-oriented automated grading choices, compare Automated Grading Software. If your priority is requirements management rather than coding assessment, ReqView has a free tier limited to one document, 150 objects per document, and one custom attribute, while its Pro plan is 440.00 EUR per year billed per user. Innoslate offers a free Academia plan for educators and students who sign up with an .edu account; it is a different direction for readers seeking an academic requirements tool. NETVIBES, QSC QS1, Siemens Polarion REQUIREMENTS, Doorstop, OSRMT, and ProR are also alternatives to consider.

Readers comparing requirements tools can browse Requirements Management Software. For electrical design, see Electrical Design Software; for code analysis, Static Analysis Tools and C and C++ Static Analysis Tools. Readers evaluating machine-learning platforms can also compare Deep Learning Software.

Verdict

Choose MATLAB Grader if you teach MATLAB and want browser-based assignment authoring, automatic grading, actionable assessment feedback, and LMS delivery in one workflow. The main reason to look elsewhere is a need for built-in similarity scoring or LMS access without the required academic license coverage.
