Overview

Lightning Bolt builds schedules around organizational coverage rules, time-off requests, shift preferences, and specialty requirements. Its optimization process weighs staff availability and skills alongside those constraints, which makes it more relevant to teams coordinating complex coverage than to organizations seeking only a basic rota.

The product is designed for practices of any size, with no technical limit on providers or locations. Lightning Bolt was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Miami. Scheduling has moved to PerfectServe.com; existing accounts, schedules, and logins remain unchanged.

Key features

Constraint-aware scheduling

AI schedule optimization considers coverage needs, staff availability, skill sets, and shift preferences. Availability management, shift templates, self-scheduling, and open-shift management support the surrounding scheduling workflow. These capabilities suit teams with competing rules to reconcile, but buyers should confirm that the system’s configuration covers their particular specialties and processes.

Implementation and support

A dedicated implementation consultant guides data gathering, training, and configuration. The typical implementation takes 4–6 weeks and can vary with administrator availability, so the supported setup is a strength for teams that need guidance, while still requiring staff time during rollout. Technical support is available by phone, email, or request submission from 8 AM–8 PM Eastern Time.

Integrations and security

Lightning Bolt integrates with ClinConnect and Microsoft Outlook. PerfectServe says the wider product supports more than 250 integrations, while certified Epic and Oracle integration depth should be confirmed before procurement. That makes integration review particularly important for organizations whose clinical workflows depend on those systems.

PerfectServe says it uses industry-standard internet security methods and encrypts sensitive information such as personal health information with SSL where appropriate. Its privacy policy covers the Lightning Bolt websites and Balanced Physician Scheduler mobile app, and says physician phone numbers are not sold or shared beyond what is needed to provide services.

Pricing

Lightning Bolt Clinical Team Scheduling uses custom pricing. Licenses are per seat, and a net increase in scheduled individuals requires additional licenses. That structure makes the cost sensitive to roster growth, so practices should request a quote based on their current and expected scheduled headcount. No free plan or trial terms are established.

Platforms

Subscribers can access updated schedules on iOS and Android devices, and the maker offers a native iPhone app for free. The product is web-based and fully functional on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Its combination of mobile and desktop access suits teams whose clinicians need schedules across devices; Android and iOS schedule access is for subscribers.

Who it's for

Lightning Bolt is a strong candidate for practices scheduling physicians and other clinical staff across coverage requirements, provider rules, and specialty needs. Its claimed ability to handle any practice size makes it relevant to both smaller groups and multi-location operations. Practices with growing teams should weigh the additional-license requirement, while buyers dependent on Epic or Oracle should verify integration depth before choosing it.

Pros and cons

Pros: Scheduling accounts for availability, skills, preferences, and coverage constraints, which is useful when clinical shifts cannot be assigned by simple rotation.
Pros: A dedicated consultant supports data gathering, training, and configuration, with a typical 4–6 week timeline.
Pros: Mobile schedule access and full web functionality across Linux, Mac, and Windows cover a broad range of devices.
Cons: Per-seat licensing means adding scheduled individuals can increase the license requirement and cost.
Cons: Epic and Oracle integration depth must be confirmed, which adds a procurement check for organizations relying on those systems.
