Overview

LaunchBox is a game-library manager for people bringing PC storefront games and emulated console titles into one collection. It suits players with mixed libraries who want more than a list of installed games, though the polished, controller-focused presentation sits behind a paid license.

Automated imports for Steam, GOG, ROM files, and MS-DOS games give LaunchBox broad reach across modern and older libraries. It can add box art, metadata, fan art, screenshots, and logos, making a large collection more browsable; the breadth matters less if you only need a launcher for one store.

Key features

Filters for genre, platform, ESRB rating, developer, and publisher provide useful ways to narrow a varied library. Custom status and source fields, plus editable metadata, let users track their own categories as well as standard game details. This flexibility is a strength for collectors, but may be more cataloging than a small library needs.

Premium adds community-created or custom themes, Big Box mode, gamepad automation, startup and pause screens, and display customization. Those tools make the paid tiers more relevant to users who want a tailored, controller-led interface; the free Windows experience remains the more direct fit for importing and playing without those presentation extras. The maker describes Premium as DRM-free and permits deployment on as many personal devices as desired.

The Windows app supports Windows 10 and higher, with Windows 10 and 11 fully supported. It can be moved to another folder or computer by copying it. Android is free for collections of up to 100 games, and the app is distributed through direct downloads and updates. Android shares the games database, media, and portable XML data with Windows, and Windows data can be exported to Android. Support includes forums, how-to videos, bug reporting, and feature requests.

Pricing

LaunchBox is freemium. The free Starter (Windows) plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the core experience, with importing and playing all games. Android is free for collections of 100 games or fewer. These free options suit users who can live without Windows Premium features or whose Android collection stays within the cap.

Regular (Windows) costs 30.00 USD per once. It includes all Premium features, a license that lasts forever, and one year of free updates. This is the entry paid option for Windows users who want themes, Big Box, and the other presentation and gamepad features, but it does not include lifetime updates.

Bundle (Windows and Android) costs 35.00 USD per once and includes all Premium features for both apps, licenses that last forever, and one year of free updates to both apps. It fits users who want paid licenses across both platforms. Lifetime (Windows) costs 75.00 USD per once, includes all Premium features, and adds lifetime updates to a perpetual license; it is for Windows users who place lasting updates above the lower upfront cost.

Platforms

LaunchBox runs on Windows and Android. Its multi-store and emulator coverage, ROM and MS-DOS imports, controller support, and cross-device data options make it more suited to a combined PC-and-retro collection than to managing one storefront alone.

Who it's for

Choose LaunchBox if you want to import games from several sources, enrich them with artwork, and organize a collection with detailed filters and custom fields. It is especially well matched to collectors who use both Windows and Android or want to browse with a controller. Look elsewhere if you need only a focused game database or do not need the catalog and presentation tools that distinguish it.

Pros and cons

Broad imports: Steam, GOG, ROM, and MS-DOS support brings storefront and emulated games into one library.
Rich cataloging: Multiple filters, custom fields, and editable metadata support detailed collection management.
Portable, cross-device data: Windows can be moved by copying, and its data can be exported for Android.
Premium features cost extra: Themes, Big Box, gamepad automation, and presentation controls are not part of the free Windows tier.
Android free use has a cap: The free app covers collections of 100 games or fewer.

Alternatives

BoardGameGeek is a free option on Android, iOS, and the web for readers looking for a board-game-focused service rather than LaunchBox's PC and emulated-game library tools.

RaiderZ Game Database is free to play on the web and Windows, an alternative for readers seeking that game database rather than a cross-source collection manager.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Database is a free Android, iOS, and web option for readers focused on Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

IGDB offers a free web and API option; its commercial API use requires a partnership, so it is a better fit for readers seeking game data for an integration than a personal launcher.

RAWG has a free API plan for non-commercial projects, with 500,000+ games and up to 20,000 requests per month. Choose it when you need game data for a project rather than a desktop collection manager.

The Visual Novel Database offers a free API for non-commercial use with request and execution limits, for readers focused on visual novel data.

YGOPRODeck offers a free API with a 20-requests-per-second limit; it suits readers seeking that API rather than a general game library manager.

Pokémon TCG Card Database is an alternative for readers seeking the Pokémon Trading Card Game's official site and database.

Verdict

LaunchBox is a strong choice for collectors who want one organized library across PC stores and emulated games, with substantial artwork and controller-oriented presentation options. Its main reason to choose it is that combination of imports, catalog controls, and portable Windows-to-Android data; its main reason to look elsewhere is that Premium presentation features require payment and Android's free tier stops at 100 games.
