Overview

MediaWiki is server-based software for building and maintaining wikis. It is a strong fit for publishers and organizations that can run their own hosting and want control over how a knowledge site works. It is less suitable when a project needs fine-grained access restrictions or a managed service with little operational work.

Key features

Contributors edit pages in wikitext without needing HTML or CSS, and earlier revisions can be restored. That gives teams a practical way to recover from unwanted changes, though the editing model is oriented around wiki pages rather than dedicated forum or blogging workflows.

Administrators can change appearance and behavior through extensions, and developers can build or contribute them. This flexibility can adapt a wiki to a project, but it shifts responsibility to administrators: third-party extensions may be unmaintained, vulnerable, incompatible with some releases, or unreliable when combined.

The REST API exposes content and functions over HTTP, including search, page transformations and revision history. It returns JSON or HTML, and extensions can provide additional endpoints, making it useful for projects that need programmatic access to wiki content. MediaWiki is designed for high-traffic sites and supports caching, but that capacity still depends on suitable hosting and administration.

Custom domains, single sign-on, content analytics and version history are supported. The software is free under GNU GPL version 2 or later and is provided without warranty to the extent permitted by law. Security updates are issued for one year per release; administrators should subscribe to the low-traffic mediawiki-announce list to follow security notices.

Pricing

MediaWiki: 0.00 USD per free. This is free, self-hosted software under GNU GPL version 2 or later, with no trial period. There is no paid hosted tier in this plan; the trade-off is that the user supplies and maintains the server and database.

The latest stable version requires PHP 8.3.0 or later, a web server, and MariaDB 10.3.0+, MySQL 5.7.0+, PostgreSQL 10.0+ or SQLite 3.31.0+. Those requirements make it a better fit for teams with technical capacity than for buyers seeking a ready-to-use hosted wiki. Setup guidance describes bundles including XAMPP for Linux, Windows and Mac, and MAMP for Windows and Mac.

Platforms

MediaWiki is available for self-hosting on Linux, macOS and Windows, with web access and an API. Documentation, FAQs, community channels and a community support desk provide routes for setup questions, but they are not a substitute for an operator responsible for the deployment.

Who it's for

Choose MediaWiki for a public or collaborative knowledge project that benefits from revision history, customization and API access, especially when the organization can manage server requirements and extension maintenance. Look elsewhere for a small site constrained by disk or memory, a wiki requiring partial access restrictions, or a project whose main need is forum or blogging software.

Pros and cons

Pro: Restorable page history supports collaborative editing while preserving a route back from unwanted changes.
Pro: The REST API, including JSON and HTML responses, gives developers access to content, search and history.
Pro: Extension support and caching offer room to customize and support high-traffic wikis.
Con: Self-hosting brings PHP, web-server and database requirements that the operator must meet and maintain.
Con: Third-party extensions can introduce security, compatibility and reliability risks.
Con: Partial access restrictions, resource-constrained small sites and dedicated forum or blogging projects are poor fits.

Alternatives

Confluence is worth considering for a small team wanting a hosted-style starting point: its free plan lasts forever for 10 users and includes 2 GB of file storage and three active whiteboards per user. MoinMoin is another free, GPL-licensed wiki with Linux, macOS, Windows, web and API platforms. PmWiki suits readers seeking free self-hosted software that requires PHP, with paid technical support and development also offered.

Wiki.js is a free, AGPL-licensed self-hosted option. Slab may suit teams preferring a web-oriented service, with a free plan for up to 10 users, 10 MB attachments, 90 days of version history and 30 days of usage analytics. BookStack is a free, MIT-licensed self-hosted alternative. Docmost offers a community open-source edition with real-time collaboration, spaces, full-text search, page history and restore, and public sharing. BlueSpice has a free self-hosted edition with a visual editor, performance search, templates and PDF export.

Verdict

MediaWiki is a compelling choice for teams and publishers that want a customizable wiki with revision recovery, API access and room to serve high traffic, and can take responsibility for hosting and extensions. Choose another tool if you need partial access controls, a smaller resource footprint or a more managed route to publishing shared knowledge.
