Overview

Storyloft connects a manuscript editor with tools for research, character and scene development, illustration, book design, and publication files. Keeping those stages in one workspace can reduce the need to move a project among separate tools; writers who only need to edit text may find the scope unnecessary.

Eddy is optional and does not alter a manuscript unless the author requests an action. Storyloft says private project content is not used to train AI models, and hosted documents are protected with TLS 1.2 or higher in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest. Those controls may matter to writers handling unpublished work, though they do not replace a writer’s own assessment of privacy needs.

Key features

Manuscript work and research

Eddy can analyze a manuscript and suggest edits in context, making it more relevant to a book project than an assistant detached from the draft. It can also conduct web research and save structured citations to the manuscript library, which keeps source material close to the work it supports. Writers who prefer to make editorial decisions without AI can simply avoid Eddy.

Worldbuilding and book production

Worldbuilding and illustration tools help organize characters, scenes, and artifacts while maintaining a consistent visual style. Book themes, cover design, and print and ebook exports extend the workspace from drafting into production. Storyloft supports EPUB, PDF, and DOCX manuscript exports; it also says its publication-ready files can be prepared for services such as Kindle Direct Publishing and IngramSpark.

Print PDF export, cover layout, and bleed settings make the design tools relevant to authors preparing print editions as well as ebooks. That integrated path is convenient for a writer who wants to handle both formats in one product, but it is less compelling if the job is only to format an already-finished book.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Start Free	0.00 USD per free	One manuscript up to 5,000 words, 10 image credits, 20 Eddy AI conversations, and unlimited worldbuilding
Storyloft Pro	39.00 USD per month	Unlimited manuscripts and Eddy access, research tools, charts and data visualizations, footnotes, endnotes, and themes
Lifetime Access	399.00 USD per once	Everything in Storyloft Pro, future features and updates, and priority access to new AI features

The free plan is a way to explore the workspace, not a practical home for a full manuscript: it allows only one project of up to 5,000 words, and writers must upgrade to continue writing after reaching that ceiling. Its 20 AI conversations and 10 image credits also limit experimentation, although unlimited worldbuilding remains available.

Pro is the working tier for authors with longer or multiple manuscripts who need research and production features; unlimited Eddy access removes the free plan’s conversation cap. Lifetime Access trades a one-time payment for Pro’s scope and future updates, making it the alternative for buyers who prefer not to keep a monthly subscription. Paid plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, and monthly and annual subscriptions can be canceled at any time.

Platforms

Storyloft runs in a web browser and has desktop applications for macOS and Windows. The Windows download supports 10 and 11 in 64-bit editions; macOS installers cover both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. That desktop choice suits writers who want a native application, while browser access avoids tying use to those desktop systems.

Who it's for

Storyloft suits fiction authors, nonfiction writers, and indie publishers who want manuscript development and book production together. Its research citations can help nonfiction projects keep sources near the draft, while worldbuilding and illustration tools are relevant to fiction writers organizing characters, scenes, and artifacts. Authors who only need a standalone editor, or who need to develop a full book before paying, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Connected authoring workflow: Drafting, research, worldbuilding, design, and export sit within one platform, useful for writers managing a book from early work to publication files.
AI remains under author control: Eddy does not make unrequested manuscript changes, and the AI features can be left unused.
Useful format coverage: EPUB, PDF, and DOCX exports support both ebook and print-oriented workflows.
Severe free-plan writing cap: One 5,000-word manuscript is unlikely to carry most book projects through completion.
Pro is a meaningful commitment: Storyloft Pro costs 39.00 USD per month, so the integrated toolkit is harder to justify for writers who need only one part of it.

Alternatives

Book Layout Software is a broader starting point for comparing tools centered on page design and layout.

Choose Kotobee Author if a wider range of platform support, including mobile and Linux, or a focus on interactive ebook technologies and digital publishing is more important than Storyloft’s connected manuscript workflow.

Coverfairy is the more focused option when the immediate need is cover creation: its free tier includes four one-time AI image credits and watermarked cover drafts.

Folio Studio may fit a writer who wants a free single-project layout workflow, with EPUB and watermark-free PDF exports and one introductory AI action.

Koberger is worth considering for free formatting, design, layout, and preview, but exporting finished files requires Pro.

Blurb BookWright is an alternative for desktop book design, with templates, layout suggestions, and offline editing.

Bookmint may suit a browser-based designer who wants its 55 templates and design tools, though free exports include a watermark unless activated.

Dibbly Create is an alternative for writers who want a free monthly token allowance and project-based writing and design limits.

Folius is a browser-based option for writers prioritizing unlimited books and chapters, print preview, and EPUB, Markdown, and backup exports on its free plan.

Verdict

Choose Storyloft if you are developing a book and want manuscript editing, research, worldbuilding, design, and export in one workspace, with AI kept under your control. Look elsewhere if you need a free environment for a full-length manuscript or only want a narrower writing or layout tool; the 5,000-word free ceiling and 39.00 USD per month Pro price make those cases difficult to overlook.
