Overview

Wakeline is an in-app guidance platform for teams that want to create tours, checklists, and other prompts inside their product. It is best suited to product, success, and marketing teams that need to revise onboarding without routing every change through engineering. The trade-off is a tightly capped free tier, with audience targeting and analytics starting on Pro.

Key features

The point-and-click builder places steps on real app pages, including signed-in pages through a browser extension. Teams can create tours, checklists, tooltips, banners, and surveys; more than 45 templates and AI-generated draft steps offer a head start, but teams still need to shape guidance around their own users and product.

Targeting can use visitor status, user traits, saved segments, page or event triggers, and frequency caps. That range is useful for avoiding one-size-fits-all prompts, though audience targeting is a Pro feature. Per-step translations, automatic language detection, and fallback support localized guidance. Reporting covers starts, completions, drop-offs, clicks, survey responses, and trends; session replay and A/B testing are also listed features.

Wakeline says its browser-based approach works with React, Vue, Angular, Svelte, Rails, Django, WordPress, and plain HTML. Its SDK is described as asynchronous, about 24 KB, and installable with one script. Integrations with data tools, Slack, and other stack tools are coming soon, so teams needing those connections now should look elsewhere.

Its privacy policy says traffic is encrypted in transit and credentials are stored as bcrypt hashes. The SDK key is limited to reading published guides and writing interaction events. Sensitive replay inputs such as passwords, emails, and phone numbers are masked by default before data leaves the browser; customers choose retention from one to 365 days, with 30 days as the default. Wakeline says it does not sell personal information or use end-user data for advertising, and acts as processor for SDK end-user data.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows 3 flows, 1,000 monthly active users, and 1 teammate, with community support. It suits a small team evaluating basic guidance, but its flow, audience, and seat caps leave little room for broader use.

Pro costs 41.00 USD per month, billed annually. It raises the limits to 25 flows, 25,000 monthly active users, and 5 teammates, and adds audience targeting, analytics, localization, and email support. This is the practical entry point for teams that need to tailor and measure guidance.

Business costs 166.00 USD per month, billed annually, for unlimited flows, 250,000 monthly active users, unlimited teammates, CSV export, and priority support. SSO is marked as coming soon, so it should not be the deciding reason to buy today. Enterprise has custom pricing, custom MAU and flow limits, SAML SSO and SCIM, a security review and DPA, a dedicated success manager, and an uptime SLA; it fits organizations that need negotiated scale or those controls.

Platforms

Wakeline lists Android, iOS, web, and browser extension. Its browser-based implementation is aimed at web products across the named frameworks and stacks.

Who it's for

Wakeline fits product, success, and marketing teams that want to create and adjust in-app guidance themselves, especially when targeting, localization, and engagement reporting matter. It is a weaker fit for teams that need integrations immediately, or that cannot work within the free plan's one-teammate and 1,000-user limits.

Pros and cons

Pro: Point-and-click placement on live and signed-in pages helps teams author guidance in the context where users encounter it.
Pro: Targeting rules, localized steps, and engagement reporting support more deliberate onboarding than static prompts alone.
Pro: The SDK is described as small and asynchronous, with a one-script installation.
Con: Data-tool and Slack integrations are coming soon, limiting teams that depend on connected workflows now.
Con: The free plan is restricted to 3 flows, 1,000 monthly active users, and one teammate; key targeting and analytics are on paid plans.

Alternatives

Driver.js is a free option for readers who want unlimited projects and personal or commercial use without attribution requirements.

Candu is an alternative for teams considering overlays and live-experience limits or licenses. Clew is worth comparing for teams wanting self-hosting, with its free plan capped at one site, one seat, and three published tours. Guidez offers another freemium option, including a Hobby plan capped at 100 MAU per month and one team member.

Usertour may suit teams that prioritize public source code and Docker self-hosting; its core is MIT-licensed. Shepherd and Intro.js are other web-based options. GuideMark is a paid web-based alternative.

Verdict

Choose Wakeline if your team wants to build and measure in-app guidance without relying on engineering for every change, and can accept its current integration gap. Its live-page builder and combination of targeting, localization, and reporting are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if integrations are essential today or the Free plan's user and teammate caps are too restrictive.
