Overview

Nomad brings container, legacy, and batch applications together on shared infrastructure, alongside binaries and virtual machines. That makes it a practical option for organizations with mixed workloads or a gradual move toward containerization, rather than a fit only for container-native environments. It can manage deployments across private data centers and multiple clouds, and HashiCorp says a single cluster can scale to thousands of nodes. That stated scale is notable, but self-hosting means the organization remains responsible for deployment and infrastructure.

Nomad supports multi-cluster management, autoscaling, and rolling updates. It is delivered as a precompiled binary or package for several operating systems, and can also be built from source; installation instructions cover Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Key features

Mixed workloads and edge devices

Nomad can schedule containers, legacy software, batch applications, binaries, and virtual machines. Teams can therefore consolidate different application types on one scheduler instead of requiring every workload to fit a container model. It also manages workloads on edge devices such as sensors and microcomputers that may not maintain a continuous connection to central cloud services. That is useful for distributed operations, but teams seeking a hosted service rather than a self-managed platform should look elsewhere.

Container handling and HashiCorp integrations

The Docker driver downloads containers, maps ports, starts and watches them, then cleans them up. Consul integration supports automatic clustering, service registration and discovery, service mesh, and dynamic configuration. Vault integration retrieves static and dynamic secrets for workloads. These connections are a strong reason to consider Nomad in an environment already using Consul or Vault; they matter less to teams without those tools.

Security and policy

Nomad includes mutual TLS, access control lists, namespaces, and Sentinel policies. Its broader policy capabilities include policy as code, testing, admission control, runtime enforcement, reporting, and CI/CD integration. Multi-tenancy has a meaningful plan boundary: some multi-tenant features, including resource quotas, audit logging, and multi-region deployments, are Enterprise additions. Organizations that need those controls should budget for Enterprise rather than assume they come with the free plan.

Pricing

Nomad has a free plan and a freemium pricing model, which gives teams a way to use the product without a stated license price. The trade-off is that Enterprise features are separate, so the free option may not suit organizations that need its additional governance or operational controls.

Enterprise Self Managed uses customizable plans with premium support and custom pricing. It is aimed at organizations running Nomad themselves that need paid capabilities and support. Flex offers multi-year plans, preferred pricing, and premium support included, also at custom pricing; its multi-year commitment makes it a better fit for buyers prepared to contract for a longer term. Neither paid plan has a published price in these terms, so prospective buyers should request pricing before comparing total cost.

Platforms

Nomad is self-hosted and supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and API access. Supported cloud environments include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. The self-hosted model offers deployment control, but not the convenience of delegating platform operations to a hosted Nomad service.

Who it's for

Nomad is best suited to teams that want one scheduler for mixed workloads, need to span cloud, on-premises, or edge settings, and can take responsibility for self-hosted operations. It is especially compelling where Consul and Vault already form part of the infrastructure. Teams requiring Enterprise-only multi-tenant controls, quotas, audit logging, multi-region deployments, or advanced server management should evaluate paid plans. Those wanting a managed service or whose needs center on a narrower tool category may be better served elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Supports containers, legacy and batch applications, binaries, and virtual machines, so varied workloads can share a scheduler.
Pro: Edge support reaches devices that are not continuously connected to central cloud centers.
Pro: Consul and Vault integrations cover service discovery, service mesh, dynamic configuration, and workload secrets.
Con: Self-hosting leaves deployment and infrastructure operations to the organization.
Con: Resource quotas, audit logging, multi-region deployments, and some multi-tenant capabilities require Enterprise.
Con: Paid plans use custom pricing, making costs harder to assess before requesting a quote.

Alternatives

For readers evaluating adjacent categories, Container Orchestration Software is a broader category to compare, while Service Mesh Platforms focuses on mesh needs. Nomad itself includes service-mesh integration through Consul, but its core role is workload scheduling.

step-ca is a free alternative for teams seeking a certificate authority, with a free plan and Linux, macOS, Windows, API, and self-hosted platforms. OpenCA PKI, OpenXPKI, and Dogtag Certificate System are also free options; their supported platforms are web/Linux/macOS, web/Linux, and Linux, respectively. EJBCA, Let's Encrypt, and cert-manager are listed as free alternatives. SecureW2 Cloud NAC is a paid alternative with pricing by quote and support for Android, API, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Nomad if you need a self-hosted scheduler that can handle mixed workloads across cloud, data-center, and edge environments, particularly alongside Consul and Vault. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; its self-managed operations and Enterprise-only governance features are the main reasons to look elsewhere.
