Overview

Happy HR covers employee records, time off, onboarding, performance and time tracking, as well as recruitment, safety, training, surveys and asset management. That breadth can reduce the need to piece together separate tools for routine HR work. It is less persuasive for a business that needs only one focused function.

The maker is based in Essendon West, Victoria, and was founded in 2014. Happy HR describes its platform as ISO 27001 certified and says it serves thousands of Australian businesses. The platform also integrates with accounting, rostering, ERP and other app partners.

Key features

Recruitment and employee management

The free recruitment software includes job advertising, candidate matching and talent-pool management. It gives employers a way to use Happy HR for hiring without first buying the broader HR subscription. Free rostering and timesheet management add practical workforce tools, while employee records, leave, onboarding and performance management address ongoing staff administration.

Support and add-ons

Plans include 15 minutes of dedicated HR support per month, a useful allowance for occasional questions but a limited amount of help for employers needing regular guidance. Pro customers receive a dedicated qualified HR consultant. Payroll and learning are separate add-ons: the learning management system includes compliance courses, an AI course builder, learning pathways, skill mapping and reporting. Payroll options range from standard payroll to outsourced processing.

Pricing

The free recruitment plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes recruitment software, job advertising, candidate matching and talent-pool management. The page also describes a 30-day free trial that does not require a credit card and requires at least one employee. This is a low-commitment way to explore recruitment, not a substitute for the paid employee-management plans.

Self-guided and Pro are each priced at 12.00 USD per month on a 12-month subscription term, plus GST, with a minimum of 10 employees. Longer terms of 24 or 36 months save more, though they also extend the commitment. Pro has a one-time setup fee of 1,899 +GST; its setup work includes account configuration, an HR audit, position descriptions, and manager and employee training. Choose Self-guided to avoid that Pro setup charge; Pro is the better fit for employers who want a dedicated qualified HR consultant and onboarding support.

Payroll standard is 4.00 USD per month +GST, with setup quoted separately; it includes flexible payroll, employee self-service, timesheets, reporting and ATO electronic lodgements. Payroll + is 6.00 USD per month +GST, also with setup quoted separately, and adds a pay conditions engine, compliant awards, rostering and a time-and-attendance kiosk. Outsourced payroll costs 19.95 USD per month +GST weekly, 14.95 USD per month +GST fortnightly, or 9.95 USD per month +GST monthly; setup is quoted separately. These options suit employers choosing a specific payroll service rather than expecting payroll to be part of the base HR plan.

The Learning Management System costs 4.00 USD per month +GST and includes compliance courses, an AI course builder, learning pathways, skill mapping and reporting and analytics. The Course Library is 4.00 USD per month +GST. Both are separate purchases, so businesses needing learning tools should factor them into the subscription cost.

Platforms

Happy HR is available on web, Android and iOS. Its cloud delivery and mobile apps suit teams needing access beyond a desktop, while the listed platform options do not include a self-hosted version.

Who it's for

Happy HR is a strong candidate for employers that want recruitment, core HR administration and workforce tools in one platform, and can meet the 10-employee paid-plan minimum. Smaller employers can start with the free recruitment software, but teams seeking a paid HR plan for fewer than 10 employees should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Broad employee-lifecycle coverage: Recruitment, records, leave, onboarding, performance, time tracking, safety, training, surveys and asset management serve employers that want multiple HR functions together.
Useful free starting point: Recruitment software includes job advertising and candidate matching, with a no-credit-card 30-day trial.
Paid plans require a substantial commitment: A 10-employee minimum and 12-, 24- or 36-month terms may rule out smaller employers or those wanting a short subscription.
Pro adds a sizable upfront charge: The 1,899 +GST setup fee may be worthwhile for its consultant and configuration support, but raises the cost of choosing that plan.
Add-ons raise the total: Payroll and learning are separately priced, so employers needing those functions should include them in their budget.

Alternatives

For a narrower employee self-service option with a free tier capped at one employee profile, 10 AI credits and watermarked PDF downloads, consider HRDocket Employee Self-Service. Employers that need HR case management and can meet a 500-user starting threshold may prefer Applaud HR Case Management, which uses custom pricing. For knowledge-base software rather than a broad HR platform, compare HR Knowledge Base Software or HR Software.

Verdict

Choose Happy HR if your business has at least 10 employees and wants recruitment, employee management and workforce tools under one roof, with optional consultant support. Its breadth and free recruitment offering are the main draws. Look elsewhere if you need a paid plan for a smaller team, want a short-term commitment, or would rather avoid the Pro setup charge and separately priced payroll and learning products.
