Overview

VICE covers eight Commodore systems: the C64, C64DTV, C128, VIC20, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64 and CBM-II. That range makes it a practical choice for a varied collection of 8-bit software. The important distinction is maturity: the manual says the C64DTV, C128, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64 and CBM-II emulators may be less capable than those for the C64 or VIC20.

The project aims for cycle-accurate emulation, with 6502/6510 processors, documented and undocumented opcodes, and careful chip timing. VICE is distributed under GNU GPL version 2 or later, and comes without warranty, including implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

Key features

Hardware-focused emulation: Processor instruction coverage and precise timing aim to reproduce behavior that can matter to software written for original machines. This is a meaningful strength for compatibility-sensitive use, not a guarantee that every system is equally complete.
C64 video and sound: VIC-II video and SID sound emulation include synchronization, ring modulation and filters. That makes VICE particularly well equipped for C64 software whose audiovisual behavior matters.
Disk options: Emulators support up to four external disk drives and can work with disk images, filesystem directories or compatible real devices. The range suits different media workflows, though real-device use depends on compatible hardware.
Flexible input: Joystick input can come from the keyboard or a joystick attached to the host, giving users a choice of control method.
Developer interface: A stable binary monitor interface is used by third-party tools such as C64 Studio and debugger projects, making VICE relevant beyond simply launching software.
Scope limits: VICE supports eight Commodore systems, but it is not an arcade emulator and requires a BIOS.

Pricing

VICE costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the software itself, distributed under GNU GPL version 2 or any later version; there is no paid tier or free-trial period to weigh. The main terms are consequential: the software comes without warranty, and the developers work on it in their spare time. They direct bug reports, suggestions and support requests to SourceForge trackers or email, and ask users to consult the manual first.

Platforms

VICE supports Android, Linux, macOS and Windows. The download page offers Windows 64-bit GTK3 and SDL2 builds, plus Apple Silicon and Intel Mac builds requiring macOS 12.0 or later. Android binaries are linked from a separate download page; users of other Unix-based systems are directed to the Unix download page. This breadth is useful for people moving between desktop systems, though the specific download paths differ by platform.

Who it's for

VICE is a strong fit for people who want to run software written for classic Commodore 8-bit computers and value coverage beyond the C64. C64 users in particular get detailed video and sound emulation, disk-drive options and joystick input. It is a less certain choice when a specific program depends on one of the six systems still under construction, or when dependable vendor-backed support and warranty matter.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad Commodore coverage. Eight emulated systems let users explore more of the family than a single-machine emulator.
Pros: Detailed C64 emulation. VIC-II and SID features, paired with processor and timing goals, suit software sensitive to original hardware behavior.
Pros: Multiple media and control paths. Disk images, directories, compatible real devices, keyboard joystick input and host joysticks provide practical flexibility.
Cons: Uneven system maturity. Six emulators are under construction and may lag the C64 and VIC20, so users should not assume equal capability across the suite.
Cons: No warranty and limited support capacity. The project disclaims warranty and its developers work in their spare time, making it a poor fit for users who need guaranteed support.

Alternatives

For another free desktop Commodore emulator, compare Breadbin466, which supports Linux, macOS and Windows and is MIT-licensed; Commodore ROM images are not covered by that license. Frodo is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows. Z64K is also free and supports those three desktop platforms.

Choose VirtualC64 if macOS or web support better matches your setup; it is open-source under the GNU General Public License. Viciious is a free alternative for Linux or web users. CCS64 may suit Windows users willing to consider a freemium option; its shareware registration is 30.00 USD per once for regular use, with special features potentially available to registered users. C64 Forever is another freemium choice, but it supports Windows only. For broader browsing, see Commodore 64 Emulators, Multi-System Emulators or Emulator Software.

Verdict

Choose VICE if you want a free, multi-system Commodore emulator with especially detailed C64 video and sound emulation and flexible disk support. Its breadth and hardware focus are the case for it; the under-construction status of six systems, no warranty and spare-time support are the reasons to look elsewhere when those machines or dependable assistance are essential.
