Overview

Participants share unique referral links and may unlock rewards when referred friends become customers. Teams can build campaigns with ReferralHero widgets or their own forms, then tailor widget copy and colours. The company says its AI-powered setup can build a program in 48 hours; JavaScript and REST APIs and webhooks provide options for custom integration and real-time data delivery.

ReferralHero launched in 2016 and Lamar acquired it in 2021. The service runs on Amazon Web Services, with real-time replication to redundant databases, six-hour backups, and reported uptime above 99.99%. LD Innovations LLC is the owner and data controller. ReferralHero says it has completed its GDPR compliance roadmap and provides EU and UK Data Processing Agreements for review and signature.

Key features

Triggered email and SMS automations, segmentation, a smart leaderboard, manual referral review, and automatic coupon or access-code distribution cover both campaign engagement and reward handling. Supported rewards include cash, gift cards, and coupon codes, with a 90-day attribution window. That gives teams several ways to recognize referrals, while manual review can add oversight to reward decisions.

Analytics track attribution channels and sources, sharing channels, device, and location, alongside individual subscriber analytics and CSV exports. ReferralHero says it integrates with more than 500 external services, including Stripe, HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Shopify, and Zapier. The breadth is useful for teams that need referral activity connected to their existing stack, while APIs and webhooks give developers additional integration routes.

Fraud controls include a real-time anti-fraud algorithm and ReCaptcha, with optional participant phone verification by SMS. However, ReCaptcha and SMS verification are excluded from PRO, so teams that consider those controls essential should compare plan terms carefully. The homepage also states that customers have access to 24/7 technical support for campaign setup.

Pricing

ReferralHero has a free plan, a seven-day trial, and paid plans from 199.00 USD per month. The free tier is genuinely free and requires no credit card, but its 25-subscriber cap and ReferralHero branding make it better for a small pilot than a campaign with a larger audience.

Free Forever Plan: Free, up to 25 subscribers, with all PRO features included and ReferralHero branding. The subscriber ceiling is the main constraint despite the broad feature access.
PRO: 199.00 USD per month, up to 10,000 members. ReCaptcha and SMS verification are not included, a meaningful trade-off for teams prioritising those fraud checks.
PREMIUM: 199.00 USD per month, up to 50,000 subscribers, priority support, and a risk-free period for 10 days. Annual prepay offers savings of $597 by providing three months free. At the same monthly price as PRO, its higher stated subscriber ceiling and priority support make it the stronger fit for larger campaigns.
Enterprise: custom pricing for bespoke enterprise packages.

The published paid tiers both start at 199.00 USD per month, while the free plan caps participation at 25. Teams should weigh those limits against their expected campaign audience and the fraud controls they require.

Platforms

ReferralHero supports Android, iOS, web, and API access. The combination suits teams planning both app-based and web campaigns, as well as custom integrations.

Who it's for

ReferralHero is a strong fit for teams running referral campaigns that need configurable forms, participant engagement, reward distribution, channel analytics, and links to other business services. Its integrations and developer tools can suit organisations working with an established software stack. It is less compelling for a small project that expects to outgrow 25 participants quickly, or for a team seeking ReCaptcha and SMS verification within PRO.

Pros and cons

Pros: One platform combines referral links, email and SMS automations, segmentation, review tools, analytics, and reward distribution, reducing the need to assemble those campaign functions separately.
Pros: More than 500 integrations, plus APIs and webhooks, give teams multiple ways to connect campaign activity to other services.
Pros: The free plan includes PRO features without requiring a credit card, making it possible to explore the product before paying.
Cons: The free plan's 25-subscriber cap is too restrictive for many campaigns beyond an initial pilot.
Cons: Both PRO and PREMIUM are priced at 199.00 USD per month, and PRO excludes ReCaptcha and SMS verification.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Referral Management Software and Referral Marketing Software.

Choose Fieldified instead if scheduling, invoicing, CRM, and reporting matter more than ReferralHero's referral campaign toolkit; its free plan has certain usage limits and its Basic plan is 49.00 USD per month for five users. GrowSurf is another option: its free affiliate-program tier has no monthly subscription, charges a 3% success fee, and allows up to 1,000,000 participants across five affiliate programs. Consider Referral OS if you want an open-source, self-hosted referral tool whose code can be reviewed and modified; its free plan supports up to 100 tracked referrals.

ReferralMD is an alternative for teams looking for referral management with configurable workflows, provider CRM, scheduling, and intake on a free plan. RefRef offers a free cloud plan with unlimited programs and participants, reward automation, and affiliate management, or an open-source option. RQ may suit ICAEW member firms seeking core referral management, with advanced reporting, Compass, fee-sharing management, and integrations among its capabilities. Extole has a free plan for current customers generating less than $10M in revenue, with a paid plan also offered. PartnerPortal.io is worth considering for partner management: its free tier is capped at five partners, 10 leads, 10 resources, and one team member, while Professional costs 249.00 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose ReferralHero if your team needs a broad referral campaign toolkit with analytics, integrations, and several reward options, and your expected audience fits the plan limits. Its main draw is the combination of campaign engagement and integration depth; look elsewhere if the 25-subscriber free cap, 199.00 USD monthly entry point, or PRO fraud-control exclusions do not fit your needs.
