Overview

FreeITSM combines ticketing and asset tracking with service-management workflows across 23 integrated modules. Risk assessment, approval workflows, a change calendar and change audit trail extend it beyond an email queue, giving teams ways to organize and follow changes alongside service requests. That scope makes it a plausible fit for IT teams consolidating service desk processes on their own infrastructure. It is less suitable for organizations looking for managed hosting or a formal vendor support channel: the maker describes it as a solo project and directs bug reports and ideas to GitHub.

Key features

Tickets and assets

The Tickets module connects Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace mailboxes and supports assignment, prioritisation, replies, attachments and audit trails. Teams can turn familiar mailbox traffic into assigned, trackable work without losing the email workflow. Assets tracks physical and virtual equipment and can discover VMware virtual machines through vCenter, which is particularly useful when the service desk also needs visibility into virtual infrastructure.

Change controls, integrations and API

Risk assessment, approval workflows, a change calendar and a change audit trail provide a useful set of controls for teams managing change as part of IT service work. Integrations include Microsoft Intune, with optional WhatsApp connections through Twilio or Meta's WhatsApp Cloud API. The external API endpoint lets automated agents submit software inventory data, a focused capability for teams that want to feed inventory into the platform.

Security and AI

The System module includes OpenID Connect single sign-on, TOTP multi-factor authentication, account lockout, IP-based brute-force protection, trusted device management and AES-256-GCM encryption key management. These controls give administrators several mechanisms for protecting accounts and managing encryption keys; teams should still plan for security operations on the infrastructure they host themselves.

Opt-in AI functions include knowledge answers, ticket-reply cleanup, form assistance, workflow authoring and problem detection. They require a customer-provided key for Anthropic, OpenAI or OpenRouter, so the free software does not make AI usage free: providers may charge the user per token or request. The maker says prompts go to the selected provider only when an AI feature is configured and used, and that keys are encrypted in the self-hosted database. Teams should weigh those usage charges and their choice of AI provider against the convenience of the assistance features.

Pricing

FreeITSM — 0.00 USD per free. The plan is free forever, with no premium tiers. It provides access to the platform without a software subscription, making it attractive for teams able to take responsibility for deployment and upkeep. AI provider usage may cost extra and is paid by the user; there is no free trial because the plan is already free.

The main cost to consider is operational rather than a platform fee. FreeITSM can run in Docker on Linux or Windows, or be manually hosted on a web server using IIS with PHP or WAMP and MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.5+. That flexibility gives technical teams deployment options, but requires them to provide and maintain the hosting environment.

Platforms

FreeITSM supports API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows. Docker deployment is available on Linux or Windows; manual hosting uses IIS with PHP or WAMP and MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.5+. This range suits teams with control of their own server environment, rather than buyers seeking a hosted service.

Who it's for

FreeITSM is best suited to IT infrastructure and service desk teams that can self-host, want ticketing and asset tracking together, and value change controls without a software charge. Existing Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or VMware use may make its integrations particularly relevant. Teams that need formal support, managed operation or AI included at no extra provider cost should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free-forever plan has no premium tiers, so teams can use the platform without a recurring software fee.
Pros: Email ticketing, asset tracking and change controls sit in one platform, covering more than incoming requests alone.
Pros: AI features are opt-in, and the maker says prompts are sent only when configured features are used.
Cons: Self-hosting puts deployment and ongoing infrastructure responsibility on the adopting team.
Cons: There is no formal support, so organizations needing a vendor-backed support route may find the solo-project model a poor fit.
Cons: AI requires a customer-provided key and can incur separate usage charges.

Alternatives

For an open-source, self-hosted option with a freemium model and a free trial, consider Desk Support Monkey. GudDesk is another self-hostable AGPL-3.0 option with a free plan and a Pro Plan at 29.00 USD per month billed flat. Teams looking for explicit agent limits on a free self-hosted service desk can compare Tessio, whose Community plan includes 5 admin/agent seats and unlimited requesters, with an Enterprise plan on custom pricing.

Nova-Suite is a free-forever self-hosted alternative with unlimited agents and a published feature set spanning incident and problem management, knowledge base and change management. For a product with broader platform availability, a free plan and monthly paid tiers, consider ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus: its Standard plan is 13.00 USD per month billed monthly, and Professional is 27.00 USD per month billed monthly. Console is a paid alternative with a free trial.

Freshservice is a paid option with a free trial and a Starter plan at 19.00 USD per month billed annually; its Starter features include knowledge management, task management, a support portal and omnichannel support. Zammad is another option with web and Linux platforms.

Verdict

Choose FreeITSM if your IT team wants a broad service-management platform without a software fee and can host and maintain it independently. Its combination of email ticketing, asset visibility and change controls is the strongest reason to adopt it. Look elsewhere if formal support or managed hosting is essential, or if you want AI usage covered without separate provider charges.
