Overview

SunVox brings a modular synthesizer and a pattern-based tracker sequencer together, so composition and sound design can happen in the same environment. Built-in synthesizer and effect modules can be connected in complex arrangements. That makes it a focused choice for musicians who want to shape signal paths as well as write patterns, rather than rely on a collection of external instruments.

Pattern effects can select notes or controller values at random and apply probability. These tools can introduce variation into rhythms and melodies, though they serve a different purpose from manually specifying every note and controller move. Composition elements are stored in a single project file, helping preserve playback without tracking down old plugin versions. Third-party plugins are not supported, so this portability comes with less freedom to extend the sound palette through outside plugins.

Key features

SunVox supports multitrack editing and MIDI sequencing, with MIDI input, output, import and export. XM and MOD import gives users a way to bring in projects from those formats. It supports 16-, 24- and 32-bit WAV, AIFF, OGG, MP3, FLAC and XI samples, and can export multitrack WAV. That combination serves musicians working with varied sample libraries or delivering separated audio tracks.

Supported sound systems include ASIO, DirectSound, MME, ALSA, OSS, JACK, Audiobus and IAA. On iOS, SunVox is also available as an Audio Unit instrument and effect plugin, an option for users who want to use it within a compatible host. The maker describes the mobile apps as full-fledged versions with nearly identical sound to desktop editions, which gives mobile users a substantial composition environment rather than a reduced companion app.

A free cross-platform library lets developers embed the SunVox engine in their own applications, including paid games. That is a separate use from composing in the app, but it broadens the engine's appeal to developers building sound into software.

Pricing

SunVox is freemium. The SunVox plan for most platforms is 0.00 USD per free, while Android and iOS are exceptions to the free availability. The Desktop plan has no published price; custom pricing applies. Android includes the modular synthesizer and tracker, MIDI import and export, multitrack WAV export and microphone or line recording. The iOS plan includes those core functions and an Audio Unit Extension. Both mobile plans have no published price, so prospective buyers should check the relevant purchase route before choosing a platform.

Android availability has an additional complication: Google does not allow purchases of apps from developers registered in Russia. The maker directs users to email for workarounds. People who bought the app previously can download APK files, which verify the purchase with Google at first launch. This makes Android a less straightforward option for new buyers than the free desktop editions.

Platforms

Supported systems include Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and Windows CE, and a JavaScript SunVox Player runs in modern browsers with WebAssembly support. Minimum requirements include Windows 2000 on x86 or Windows 7 on x86_64, macOS 10.13, Android 4.1 and iOS 12. The browser player offers another way to access SunVox, but it requires a compatible modern browser.

Who it's for

SunVox is a strong fit for electronic composers who prefer tracker patterns, want modular synthesis and effects built into the same tool, or value projects that keep their composition elements together. MIDI exchange and multitrack WAV export also suit workflows that move between SunVox and other audio software. It is less appropriate for users who depend on third-party plugins or want a conventional plugin-centered production setup.

Pros and cons

Pros: Built-in modular instruments and effects keep sound design close to pattern writing.
Pros: Random and probability-based pattern effects support generative rhythms and melodies.
Pros: Broad sample-format support, MIDI exchange and multitrack WAV export provide practical ways to move audio and projects in and out.
Pros: A single-file project structure helps preserve playback without locating old plugin versions.
Cons: No third-party plugin support limits users who build their setup around external instruments and effects.
Cons: Android and iOS are not included in the free-on-most-platforms offer; Android purchases also face the stated Google restriction.

Alternatives

Verdict

Choose SunVox if tracker composition and modular sound design are the heart of your work, especially if you want generative pattern effects and projects that keep their composition elements together. Its cross-platform reach and strong MIDI and audio-format support make it a capable, portable choice. Look elsewhere if third-party plugins are essential, or if you need an uncomplicated route to purchasing on Android.
