What Fission is

Fission is a Mac audio editor for trimming, splitting, joining, and converting audio files. It supports MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV. For MP3 and AAC, Fission edits without re-encoding, which its maker says avoids quality loss during editing. Other tools include fades, gain adjustment, normalization, cue sheets, and Smart Split, which divides files at silence. A Batch Converter processes multiple files in sequence and saves them in a chosen format and location. The maker describes using Audio Hijack to record a podcast and Fission to edit it. Edited audio can also be saved as an iPhone ringtone, with Music.app handling conversion to a compatible format. Fission is paid, with a free trial that includes all features; audio saved during the trial has deliberately degraded quality through fades. The download includes the trial and full software, and a personalized license key unlocks the full version. The current download is listed for macOS 14 to 27, with legacy versions available for older macOS releases.
