Overview

SRTGen is a web and API service for turning video or audio into editable subtitles, then translating, styling, dubbing, and exporting them. It is best suited to creators and teams handling video localization; its main appeal is bringing those steps together, though free use is sharply capped and paid prices rise after two months.

Key features

Upload a video or audio file to generate a time-coded transcript, review and edit captions, then download SRT, VTT, ASS, or TXT files, or burn captions into the video. Speaker identification and brand presets help when captions need to match a publishing workflow rather than simply produce a transcript. SRTGen supports YouTube, TikTok, Reels, Shorts, podcasts, courses, marketing videos, and news content, so it spans short clips and longer material.

Translation supports 100 languages, and voice dubbing, review, and export sit within the same workflow. Voice-clone slots range from 3 on Free to 100 on Business. This combination is useful for teams adapting videos for different audiences; it is more machinery than needed if the job is only to create a transcript or download subtitles.

SRTGen connects to MCP-compatible agents including Codex, Claude, Gemini, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Windsurf. Agent localization adds JSON export and supports uploads up to 20 GiB. For videos over 200 MB, the recommended workflow processes a compact MP3 locally while the original stays on the user's computer for final rendering. The REST API and agent features make the service more flexible for automation, but full developer API access is reserved for higher plans.

Collaborative Workspaces provide invitations, admin, editor, and viewer roles, shared templates, unified billing and credit pools, and real-time project synchronization. Plans also include secure cloud storage. SRTGen says uploads are stored in Backblaze B2; audio processing may involve AssemblyAI, Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, and Cartesia. It describes encryption and access controls, says it does not sell personal data, and states that deleted project files are queued for removal within 30 days, account deletion schedules permanent file deletion within 90 days, and AI processing logs may remain for up to two years.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 20 signup credits, 20 transcription minutes, 40 translation minutes, up to 4k speech characters, 2 GB of storage, and one seat. Recording is limited to five minutes at 720p. It is a useful way to try the workflow, but the small transcription and translation allowances make it a poor fit for regular publishing.

Starter is $4 per month for the first two months, then $8 per month. It includes 360 credits, 360 transcription minutes, 720 translation minutes, 20 GB of storage, 10 voice-clone slots, and one seat. That is the practical step up for an individual creator producing localization regularly, though it remains a single-seat plan.

Pro is $14.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $24 per month, with 1,500 credits, 1,500 transcription minutes, 3,000 translation minutes, 100 GB of storage, 30 voice-clone slots, and three seats. It fits small teams that need shared capacity. Business is $49.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $69 per month; it raises those allowances to 5,000 credits, 5,000 transcription minutes, 10,000 translation minutes, 500 GB, and 100 voice-clone slots, with 10 seats. That is aimed at high-volume brand work, not occasional captioning.

Pro and Business add seats at $3.00 per month each. Monthly and yearly billing are offered, with a stated 25% saving for yearly billing; non-expiring top-ups cost 1.00 USD per once per 20 credits after plan allowance is exhausted. Enterprise has custom pricing for bulk processing, automation pipelines, and dedicated agency services.

Platforms

SRTGen supports web and API access. Its listed publishing use cases cover major short-video formats as well as podcasts, courses, marketing, and news content.

Who it's for

Choose SRTGen if subtitle creation is part of a broader localization process and you want translation, dubbing, styling, review, and export in one place. The Starter plan suits an individual with recurring needs; Pro and Business make more sense when shared seats, larger monthly quotas, and collaboration features matter. Look elsewhere if you need only occasional captions or a generous free allowance.

Pros and cons

Pros: Transcription, translation, voice dubbing, styling, review, and export are combined in one workflow, reducing the need to split localization steps across tools.
Pros: Export options include SRT, VTT, ASS, and TXT, with JSON through agent localization; MCP connections and an API can support automated workflows.
Pros: Team plans include shared templates, roles, synchronized projects, and unified credit pools.
Cons: Free transcription, translation, speech-character, and recording limits are restrictive for ongoing production.
Cons: The advertised introductory paid rates last only two months, after which Starter, Pro, and Business cost more.
Cons: Starter has one seat, so teams need to move to Pro or Business to collaborate through included seats.

Verdict

SRTGen is a strong fit for creators and localization teams that need more than transcription: translation, dubbing, styling, exports, and team workflows are all part of its scope. Its free tier is best treated as a short trial, and the introductory prices are temporary. Choose it when that breadth and automation justify the recurring cost; choose a simpler caption tool if you only need occasional subtitles.
