Overview

Exasol is an analytics database for organizations running concurrent analytics and AI workloads across cloud, on-premises or hybrid environments. It is best suited to teams that need to combine substantial query workloads with data integration or in-database machine learning. Its deployment range is a strength, but buyers should weigh compute and storage costs against the workload they expect to run.

Exasol says its database can analyze billions of rows in seconds, and automatic self-indexing is intended to tune performance. Those claims make it worth considering for demanding analytics, but they do not remove the need to size compute appropriately. SaaS can scale vertically or add clusters with dedicated compute for tasks such as data ingest and machine learning.

Deployment choices include fully managed SaaS, on-premises and hybrid configurations; on-premises environments can be air-gapped. That breadth can accommodate different operating requirements, though it also means choosing the deployment model is an important part of evaluating fit.

Key features

Analytics and AI: Exasol supports advanced in-database analytics and machine learning, alongside data lake support and streaming ingestion. This suits teams that want analytics workloads close to their database, rather than a product focused only on conventional querying.
Data virtualization: SaaS includes data virtualization support, useful to organizations integrating complex data environments. The company positions SaaS for multi-departmental analytics and these more involved integration needs.
SaaS capacity: SaaS plans include five databases, and the service supports multiple clusters as well as vertical scaling. Dedicated compute can be assigned to workloads such as ingest or machine learning, offering a way to separate those jobs; the added capacity has an associated compute cost.
Integrations: The integrations directory includes Airbyte, Alation, Amazon QuickSight, Apache Airflow and Apache Superset, giving teams recognizable options across data movement, governance, orchestration and analytics.
Security: Exasol states that it is ISO/IEC 27001 certified and describes access controls and incident response processes. Database authentication options include password, LDAP/AD, Kerberos SSO and OpenID; MFA is supported where the authentication provider supports it. TLS is used for JDBC, ODBC, ADO.NET, CLI and WebSockets connections. Encryption at rest must be configured on the file systems and devices supplied with the deployment, so that responsibility matters to buyers planning their security controls.
Support: The support offering includes 24/7 incident troubleshooting and monitoring, as well as performance analysis, maintenance and planning assistance—useful for organizations that need operational help with a database service.

Pricing

Exasol combines free editions with pay-as-you-go SaaS compute. The SaaS trial includes $200 of usage for 30 days and requires no credit card, giving teams a bounded opportunity to evaluate the service before committing to ongoing usage.

Exasol Personal — 0.00 USD per free: Unlimited data and clusters, but a single-user personal license and a maximum of two connected data sources. It is the free fit for an individual exploring the product, not a shared team deployment.
Exasol Community Edition — 0.00 USD per free: A free on-premises edition capped at 200GB of data, with preconfigured sample data and scripts. That makes it a practical starting point for a bounded on-premises evaluation, but the data ceiling limits its suitability for larger datasets.
Exasol SaaS XS — 3.30 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 8 vCPUs, 64GB memory and five databases. Compute is billed hourly, so the monthly figure should not be treated as a fixed all-in cost.
Exasol SaaS S — 6.60 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 16 vCPUs, 128GB memory and five databases, doubling the listed compute and memory of XS for workloads needing more capacity.
XS — 3.30 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 8 vCPUs and 64GB memory.
S — 6.60 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 16 vCPUs and 128GB memory.
M — 13.20 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 32 vCPUs and 256GB memory.
L — 26.40 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 64 vCPUs and 512GB memory.
XL — 52.80 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 128 vCPUs and 1024GB memory.
2XL — 105.60 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 256 vCPUs and 2048GB memory.
3XL — 158.40 USD per month, billed Pay-as-you-go: 384 vCPUs and 3072GB memory.
Storage — 25.00 USD per month, billed Additional cost: Separate storage pricing means storage is a distinct budget item alongside compute.

The published compute tiers scale in regular steps, making capacity choices clear, but the separate storage charge and hourly compute billing mean buyers should estimate total usage rather than compare compute prices alone.

Platforms

Exasol lists API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted and web platforms. Its deployment options include managed SaaS and self-managed on-premises or hybrid environments, including air-gapped on-premises setups. This range is useful for organizations with deployment constraints, while teams wanting only a single managed operating model should focus their evaluation on SaaS.

Who it's for

Exasol SaaS is aimed at organizations needing multi-departmental analytics, in-database machine learning or AI, or complex data integration and virtualization. It is a stronger fit for teams that can make use of its scaling and deployment options than for a single user with modest needs; the Personal edition is licensed for one user, and Community Edition's 200GB cap constrains its role as a larger production data store.

Pros and cons

Pro: Managed SaaS, hybrid and on-premises deployment options—including air-gapped setups—let organizations choose an operating environment that fits their constraints.
Pro: Data virtualization, data lake support, streaming ingestion and in-database machine learning cover a broad set of analytics and integration workloads.
Pro: The no-card trial provides $200 of SaaS usage for 30 days, while free editions offer a personal option and a bounded on-premises edition.
Con: The free editions have meaningful constraints: Personal is single-user with two data sources, and Community Edition is limited to 200GB.
Con: SaaS compute is billed hourly and storage has separate pricing, so listed compute rates alone do not show the full operating cost.
Con: Encryption at rest depends on configuration of the supplied file systems and devices, leaving that task within the deployment's security setup.

Alternatives

Consider Databend if a free self-hosted community edition is a priority; its Community plan is free and self-hosted in your own environment. Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse is another freemium option with an always-free plan for unlimited time, subject to capacity limits. Teradata VantageCloud may suit readers comparing another freemium data platform with a VantageCloud Lake Standard plan that includes Teradata Database and ClearScape Analytics with Open Analytics Framework.

Databricks Notebooks offers a free edition with one serverless workspace and limited compute size and usage, making it an option for readers whose needs fit those bounds. Firebolt offers a free self-hosted Core plan with no usage limits, though it cannot be used to build a hosted SaaS competing with Firebolt's managed service. BigQuery Data Clean Rooms is for the distinct task of publishing data to or subscribing to and querying clean-room data. Cloudera Data Lake Service is a paid alternative with pricing by sales contact. Alibaba Cloud MaxCompute is worth comparing when a subscription compute plan is preferable; its Standard computing resources plan is 22.00 USD per month with a 50-CU minimum.

Verdict

Choose Exasol if your organization needs a database for concurrent analytics and AI work across managed, hybrid or self-hosted environments, and can plan for hourly compute plus separate storage costs. Its breadth of deployment and in-database capabilities is the main reason to shortlist it. Look elsewhere if your needs are small, your free-tier limits are too restrictive, or predictable total pricing matters more than flexible compute sizing.
