Overview

Everest is a free, open-source mod loader and modding API for Celeste, suited to players who want community content and creators building it. Its combination of broad mod support, in-game management and debugging tools makes it a compelling choice for modded Celeste, with an important caveat: Olympus, its installer, may fail.

Key features

Everest supports custom maps and campaigns, texture replacements, dialogue, sound effects and code mods. These additions can leave Celeste’s original files untouched, which helps keep mod content separate from the base game. Code injection, plugin support and dependency handling give creators room for more than cosmetic changes, while the in-game updater and dependency downloader reduce the work of keeping mods and their requirements current.

Olympus is the cross-platform installer: it can update itself and inject Everest code into Celeste.exe. Players can install mods with one click from Olympus’s Download Mods section or GameBanana, or use ZIP and folder installation. The choice is useful for both newcomers seeking a direct route and users who prefer handling files themselves. But Olympus is actively worked on and may fail, so it is a potential obstacle at the first step; the project directs users to report problems in the Celeste Discord’s #modding_help channel.

Switching between Everest and vanilla Celeste is possible from the title screen or Olympus, a practical way to return to the unmodded game. Quality-of-life additions include softlock recovery on most non-vanilla maps, Discord Rich Presence and keyboard-based save-file renaming. Enhanced Debug Mode adds live map reloading, shortcuts for reloading code and assets, an improved map viewer and console logging. Those tools make Everest notably useful to creators iterating on a map or code mod, not just players installing finished work.

The feature list describes Everest as TASBot-verified. Its repository is public and MIT-licensed, and the project is maintained entirely by volunteers. Community-written wiki guides, tutorials, references and troubleshooting information are available, alongside Discord support for players and mod developers.

Pricing

Everest is free, with a free plan and no paid tier described. That makes it an accessible choice for Celeste players and mod creators; there is no paid plan to choose for additional features. Its trade-off is not a price cap but reliance on a volunteer-maintained project and an installer that may fail.

Platforms

Everest supports Windows, macOS and Linux. It works with the itch.io, Steam and Epic Games versions of Celeste, but not the Windows Store version. That store restriction is decisive: Windows Store owners need another route if they want to mod their copy.

Who it's for

Choose Everest if you play Celeste on a supported platform and want custom maps, campaigns or other community-made content, or if you create mods and need rapid reloads, map inspection and console output. It is less suitable if you own the Windows Store version or need an installer that is dependable without troubleshooting.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad support for maps, campaigns, assets and code mods makes it useful to players and creators alike.
Pros: One-click downloads, ZIP and folder installation, plus in-game updates and dependency handling provide multiple ways to manage mods.
Pros: Vanilla switching and softlock recovery address practical risks of playing non-vanilla maps.
Cons: Olympus may fail, which can complicate installation before players get to the mod features.
Cons: The Windows Store version of Celeste is unsupported.
Cons: Volunteer maintenance means the project depends on community contributors.

Alternatives

For other game-specific mod loaders, browse Game Mod Loaders. If you are modding a different game, the alternatives include MelonLoader, SMAPI, BepInEx, MWSE, Northstar, Hell2Modding, Cyber Engine Tweaks and Satisfactory Mod Loader. SMAPI is a fit for Stardew Valley players who meet its requirement of version 1.6.14 or later on Linux, macOS, Windows or Steam Deck. BepInEx is worth considering if you want manual installation and a choice of stable or bleeding-edge builds. The other options are alternatives to consider when Everest’s Celeste focus is not the right match.

Verdict

Everest is the right choice for Celeste players and creators who want a deep, free modding ecosystem, especially those who will use its content tools and debugging features. Its breadth and vanilla switching are strong reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if your Celeste copy is from the Windows Store or Olympus’s chance of failure is unacceptable.
