Overview

Perplexity is an AI search and research service for people who want concise answers with citations rather than a list of links to work through. It suits curious general users and, at higher tiers, researchers and professionals who need deeper research or searches across files and connected apps. Its strongest case is bringing those sources and multiple AI models into one search; the trade-off is that free use is limited and the most substantial allowances cost considerably more.

Key features

Answers you can trace

Perplexity researches the open web in real time and returns concise answers with inline citations attached to claims. That makes it easier to check a response and follow its references, though citations do not remove the need to judge the underlying material. Perplexity can choose among more than 20 leading models for a search, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Nemotron; this offers model breadth without requiring a separate service for each search.

Research beyond a single query

Deep Research runs dozens of searches across hundreds of sources and produces a report. It is a better fit for questions that merit synthesis than for quick lookups, but its higher limits are reserved for paid plans. Unified search reaches the open web, files, and connected apps, extending the service beyond public webpages. More than 400 app connectors can be connected, and the connector service states that it uses SOC 2, encryption, continuous security monitoring, point-in-time backups, and 30-day retention.

Work tools and platform caveats

Pro adds Computer, premium data sources, web search, files, apps, model council, and model selection. Max raises Deep Research, resource-generation, and file-upload limits, and allows more monthly video creation. Personal Computer runs inside the Perplexity macOS app and requires macOS 15 or later, so that particular capability is not a reason to choose the service on an older Mac or another platform. Comet is available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.

Pricing

Perplexity is freemium. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and offers limited daily use; free access is also described as limited weekly use suited to simple questions. It is a sensible starting point, not a strong choice for sustained research.

Pro — 20.00 USD per month: For serious work, with expanded access and higher limits. It includes 4,000 additional Computer credits and the Pro feature set. This is the more measured paid step for individuals who need more than occasional questions.
Max — 200.00 USD per month: For users who need the highest usage limits and maximum Computer use. It includes 35,000 additional Computer credits and 10,000 Computer credits per month, plus higher research, resource-generation, file-upload, and video-creation limits. Max is aimed at professionals, content creators and writers, business strategists, academic researchers, and power users; the price is difficult to justify for casual use.
Education Pro — custom pricing: Pro features for verified students and educators, plus Learn Mode, file and image uploads, and premium models. It is the relevant tier for eligible academic users, but no price is provided.
Enterprise Pro — 40.00 USD per month per seat: Includes 400 Pro Searches per week and 100 file uploads per week. Enterprise subscriptions bill per seat monthly or yearly; admins can manage members, billing, and seat counts, with seats consolidated on one organization invoice.
Enterprise Max — 325.00 USD per month per seat: Includes 4,000 Pro Searches per week, 800 Browser Agent queries per month, 1,000 file uploads per week, 10,000 personal files, and 5,000 files per project. It also supports up to 15 monthly video generations.

Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max do not offer self-serve trials. Enterprise plans include options for SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and data-retention controls, and do not use customer data to train AI models. Perplexity states SOC 2 Type 2 certification, GDPR-aligned and HIPAA-aligned safeguards, and PCI compliance. Major credit cards are accepted, with invoice and wire transfer options available in checkout. API usage is not included with Enterprise plans and requires separate credits; Max's advanced model access also applies within Perplexity web, not programmatic API access. Accidental purchases can be handled by contacting support under the refund policy.

Platforms

Perplexity is available on Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows, with API access also available. Mobile apps and app integrations make it usable beyond the browser, while Computer's macOS 15-or-later requirement limits that feature to newer Macs. The API is a separate cost rather than an extension of plan access.

Who it's for

Choose Perplexity if you want sourced web answers and a single place to search public pages, your files, and connected apps. Free access suits simple, occasional questions; Pro better fits individual serious work. Max makes sense when its larger research and creation limits are central to a professional workflow. Organizations that need per-seat administration and privacy controls can consider Enterprise, while users who need included API usage should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Inline citations make answers easier to verify than an unsupported generated summary.
Pro: Web, file, and connected-app search can bring separate information sources into one workflow.
Pro: More than 20 model choices and Deep Research support varied searches, from quick answers to multi-source reports.
Con: Free access is limited and aimed at simple questions, so regular research likely requires a paid plan.
Con: Max costs 200.00 USD per month, a steep commitment unless its increased limits are put to frequent use.
Con: API access is billed separately, and Personal Computer requires macOS 15 or later.

Alternatives

For a different balance of research, storage, or search allowances, consider Genspark Design, which has a free plan with 100 credits per day and a Plus plan with 10,000 monthly credits and 50 GB AI Drive storage at custom pricing. Fabric may suit someone prioritizing storage and spaces: its Plus plan is 8.00 USD per month, billed yearly at $96/yr, with 50GB storage, 50MB file upload, and 100 spaces. Kimi Deep Research offers a free plan with a limited monthly allowance measured by token consumption rather than query count.

Liner has a free plan with unlimited Advanced Search and 1 file upload/day up to 25MB. Consensus is oriented around paper searches, with unlimited Papers searches and 3 Deep reviews/month on its free tier. Gab AI Research Assistant offers 250 starting credits, model access using credits, web search, and file analysis on its free plan. For academic literature workflows, Elicit offers unlimited search across more than 138 million papers on its Basic plan, though Research Agent and Research Reports use is limited. Gemini Notebook has a free plan with 50 sources, 500,000 words per source, and a 200 MB per-file upload limit.

Verdict

Perplexity is a strong choice for people who want current web answers with citations and the option to search files and connected apps alongside the open web. Start free for simple questions, or choose Pro when higher access and Computer credits justify the monthly cost. Look elsewhere if you need an included API allowance, or if Max's $200.00 USD per month limits are more than your work requires.
