Overview

Dovetail brings customer research and feedback into projects, with AI tools for transcription, summaries and source-traced analysis. It is a stronger fit for teams working across several kinds of customer evidence than for people who need only a lightweight survey or text-analysis tool. Its free tier supports a small start, while ongoing Channels analysis requires a paid plan.

Key features

Projects and AI analysis

Projects support interviews, usability tests, sales calls, product demos, documents, audio, video and survey responses. That range can help research and product teams analyze different forms of feedback in one workspace, rather than treating each as a separate stream. Dovetail AI adds contextual chat with answers traced to sources, automatic transcription, insight reports and summaries. Source tracing is a practical strength when teams need to check an AI response against the underlying material; Free includes basic chat and AI summaries.

Channels and integrations

Channels continuously classify and track themes in high-volume feedback. They are available on Professional and Enterprise, which makes them unsuitable for teams that need this capability on the free tier. Those workspaces can import up to 250 data points per month and buy additional points, so teams with larger feedback volumes should weigh the monthly cap and added purchases against the value of continuous classification.

Channels can import support tickets from Front, Intercom, Jira Service Management, Freshdesk, HubSpot Service Hub and Zendesk, along with reviews from Google Play, Apple App Store and G2. The Slack integration syncs messages to Channels and supports sharing Dovetail content, notifications and comments; Ask Dovetail is an Enterprise add-on.

API and security

The API is available on Free, Professional and Enterprise workspaces for automating tasks, extracting insights and managing data through scripts and applications. Dovetail holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certifications and states that it is GDPR ready. Enterprise customers can add HIPAA controls, including default restrictions on CSV and video downloads and public sharing, enforced SSO, and Business Associate Agreements.

Pricing

Dovetail uses a freemium model. Free costs 0.00 USD per free (billed user/month) and includes one channel, one project, basic chat and AI summaries. That is a constrained way to begin: the one-project cap limits how much work can live in the workspace, and it does not include Channels, which is available only on paid tiers.

Enterprise has custom pricing and includes unlimited Agents, channels, projects and Docs, plus dashboards and priority support. Its unlimited channels make it the clearest fit for larger feedback operations, though the 250-data-point monthly import allowance still applies to Enterprise workspaces unless additional points are purchased. Enterprise also includes dedicated customer success and onboarding assistance. Professional is mentioned as a Channels-eligible plan, but no price or inclusions are stated.

After cancellation, a workspace stays read-only for 30 days to allow data export, then is deleted according to the data retention policy. Teams should plan their export within that window.

Platforms

Dovetail supports web access and provides an API. It is a cloud deployment, which suits teams working through a browser or integrating workflows with scripts and applications.

Who it's for

Dovetail is best suited to research, product and customer teams that need to combine qualitative research with support tickets or app-store reviews, then organize themes across projects. It is less suitable for teams that require high-volume continuous classification on a free plan, or for buyers who need a clearly priced paid tier before assessing fit.

Pros and cons

Pro: Projects accept interviews, calls, documents, media and surveys, helping teams bring varied customer evidence into a shared analysis workflow.
Pro: AI answers can be traced to sources, giving teams a way to verify analysis against original material.
Pro: Channels connect to several support systems and review platforms, which can reduce the separation between research and ongoing customer feedback.
Con: Free is capped at one project and one channel, with basic chat and summaries; it does not provide the paid-only Channels analysis.
Con: Professional and Enterprise imports are capped at 250 data points monthly before additional purchases, so high-volume teams need to account for extra capacity.

Verdict

Choose Dovetail if your team needs a shared home for varied customer research and values AI analysis that points back to its sources. Its range of project inputs and feedback integrations is the main reason to choose it; look elsewhere if you need paid-plan costs clearly defined before committing, or need Channels at no cost without the monthly import ceiling.
