Overview

Built on Mozilla Firefox ESR with additional privacy and security changes, Tor Browser sends its web traffic through the Tor network to help hide a user's real IP address and resist tracking, surveillance, and censorship. That makes it a strong fit for privacy-sensitive browsing and access from censored regions, but not a substitute for routing other apps through Tor.

Key features

Letterboxing, user-agent spoofing, and first-party isolation make browser fingerprinting harder. Tor Browser also uses different Tor circuits for different websites, while keeping connections to the same website on one circuit. Together, these protections make it useful when reducing cross-site tracking matters, though they do not guarantee anonymity.

HTTPS-Only Mode upgrades connections to HTTPS where possible to help prevent eavesdropping and tampering. The Standard, Safer, and Safest security levels restrict browser features to varying degrees. More restrictive settings can strengthen protection, but may break page behavior; users who depend on broad compatibility may prefer less restrictive settings.

Tor Browser can access onion services, which hide their locations and IP addresses and encrypt traffic with Tor users end to end. During setup, users in censored regions can configure bridges to connect to Tor. Tor Project recommends verifying downloads; GetTor can provide the package along with its signature, signing-key fingerprint, and checksum. Installing add-ons is strongly discouraged because they can affect privacy, security, or functionality, and those configurations are not supported.

Pricing

Tor Browser costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is open-source software with no payment required, making it suitable for anyone who wants Tor-based browsing without a subscription. There is no free trial because the browser is free to use.

Platforms

Tor Browser is available for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. It is a browser-level choice: other applications on those devices are not routed through Tor automatically.

Who it's for

Choose Tor Browser if concealing your browsing origin, resisting tracking, reaching onion services, or connecting from a censored region is more important than flawless page compatibility. It is less suitable as a general network privacy solution, for users who need every website to behave normally, or for people who want to customize the browser with add-ons.

Pros and cons

Pros: Tor routing helps hide the user's real IP address and resist tracking, surveillance, and censorship.
Pros: Fingerprinting defenses, HTTPS-Only Mode, and adjustable security levels provide several browser-level privacy and security controls.
Pros: Onion service access and bridge configuration address needs that ordinary browsing may not cover, including access in censored regions.
Cons: Stricter security levels can cause pages to work improperly, making compatibility an explicit trade-off.
Cons: Protection covers Tor Browser traffic only, not other applications on the device.
Cons: Add-ons can undermine privacy, security, or functionality, and Tor Project does not support configurations that use them.

Verdict

Tor Browser is the right choice for people who need Tor routing, onion service access, or a way to connect from censored regions without paying for the browser. Its main advantage is combining those needs with browser-level fingerprinting and security controls; look elsewhere if you need device-wide traffic protection or dependable compatibility on every page.
