Overview

Datawrapper is a web app from a Berlin-based company founded in 2012. It combines data import, visualization, and publishing, with options to embed work on websites or export it for other uses. The range covers more than 20 chart types among 25 interactive, responsive, and accessible visualization types, plus maps and tables.

For workflows beyond the browser, a REST API can create and edit charts for integrations such as CMS chart viewers and image exports. A PowerPoint add-in lets users create, edit, embed, and update visualizations within presentations. Those extensions make the product more useful to teams with established publishing processes than a standalone chart maker would be.

Key features

Charts, maps, and tables

Mapmakers get symbol, choropleth, and locator maps, along with more than 4,000 basemaps and cartograms. The choice should suit a range of geographic stories, from locating points to comparing values by area. Tables go beyond static grids with images, heatmaps, miniature charts, search, pagination, and sorting. That flexibility helps when readers need to inspect or navigate underlying data rather than just see a summary.

Publishing, exports, and privacy

Interactive visualizations can be embedded on websites; PNG downloads are included on the free plan, while PDF and SVG exports require Pro or above. That division leaves free users with a practical route to web publishing but limits their options for print-ready or vector output. Datawrapper says its embeds use no trackers, cookies, or third-party scripts and meet GDPR and CCPA requirements. It also says the service is hosted in Frankfurt and Stockholm within the EEA, is ISO 27001 certified, and undergoes yearly audits and penetration tests. Its stated security practices include encryption at rest and in transit, TLS, daily backups, and peer-reviewed code.

Collaboration and support

Team collaboration and a brand kit are supported, with advanced team permissions reserved for Business. Support is available through a contact form, email, and an Academy with more than 100 articles; paid plans list email-based support. The combination is useful for organizations publishing repeatedly, though the clearest permissions controls are not in the entry-level paid tier.

Pricing

Datawrapper is freemium. Free costs 0.00 USD per free and includes charts, maps, and tables, web publishing and embedding, PNG downloads, and unlimited publishing. The important constraint is visible attribution: every free visualization retains “Created with Datawrapper.” For personal projects, pilots, or teams comfortable crediting the tool, unlimited publishing makes this a substantial starting tier.

Pro costs 21.00 USD per month, billed per user/month excl. VAT. It removes attribution, adds PDF and SVG downloads, and keeps a 90-day edit history. This is the sensible upgrade for individual users or small publishing teams that need clean embeds or those export formats; per-user pricing means costs rise with the number of editors, and history is limited to three months.

Business costs 39.00 USD per month, billed per user/month excl. VAT. It includes Pro features, waterfall and dual-axis charts, advanced team permissions, and a 1-year edit history. It fits teams that need those chart types, stronger role controls, or a longer revision window, but the per-user price makes it less attractive where only a few members need the added capabilities.

Enterprise has custom pricing and offers custom agreements with uptime and support guarantees, self-hosting of published visualizations, and SAML single sign-on. It is the tier to consider when deployment and identity requirements or service guarantees matter more than a fixed published rate.

Platforms

Datawrapper is available on web, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows, with API and self-hosted options also listed. The web app is the core creation and publishing environment; the API and self-hosting options are particularly relevant to organizations integrating visualizations into their own systems.

Who it's for

Datawrapper is a strong fit for newsrooms, analysts, and organizations that regularly publish data online and want chart, map, and table formats in one workflow. Its interactive embeds, PowerPoint add-in, API, and no-tracker embed policy serve both editorial publishing and more integrated team workflows. It is less compelling for someone who needs attribution-free output or vector/PDF files but cannot justify a paid per-user plan, or for teams that require advanced permissions on a lower-cost tier.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad set of chart, map, and table formats supports varied data stories without restricting the work to charts alone.
Pros: Unlimited free publishing, embedding, and PNG downloads make it possible to publish extensively before paying, provided attribution is acceptable.
Pros: The API, PowerPoint add-in, and interactive embeds accommodate website and presentation workflows.
Pros: The maker says embeds avoid trackers, cookies, and third-party scripts, a useful property for privacy-conscious publishers.
Cons: Free work carries Datawrapper attribution, and removing it requires a paid subscription.
Cons: PDF and SVG downloads start at Pro, whose price is per user/month and excludes VAT.
Cons: Advanced team permissions and a one-year edit history are confined to Business, so collaborative teams may need to move beyond Pro.

Alternatives

If the main need is interactive map creation rather than a mix of visual formats, compare options in Interactive Map Software and Map Creation Software. For narrative-driven presentations, browse Data Storytelling Tools; for designed visual summaries, see Infographic Software. A broader comparison of chart-focused products is available in Data Visualization Software.

Felt is worth considering when map sharing is the priority and a free personal plan with unlimited maps matters more than uploading your own data files, which its Personal plan does not allow. Mapotic may suit a map project that needs place limits, custom fields, layers, filters, ratings, and comments in a free tier; that tier allows 100 places and may show ads. BatchGeo is an option for users who need a map workflow with Pro features such as 100,000 markers per map, password protection, ten included users, Street View, and PDF, PNG, or KML export.

MapTiler Cloud is another freemium option for map work; its free plan is limited to testing, personal, or non-commercial use and sets storage, session, API-request, and upload quotas. NextGIS Web may be preferable when a self-hosted or API-oriented mapping setup is central; its Mini plan costs 180.00 EUR per year, billed annually, for one user and 10 GiB storage. Scribble Maps offers a different mapping route, with its free plan limited to five lifetime map saves, one user, and 450×450px images.

everviz is an alternative for users comparing visualization products with a free attributed plan and a paid Team tier. Flourish may suit people who want unlimited projects and stories, its full template range, and public publishing and embeds on a free attributed plan.

Verdict

Choose Datawrapper if your work depends on publishing data clearly across charts, maps, and tables, especially when interactive embeds, API access, or presentation integration matter. Its unlimited free publishing is a genuine advantage for attributed work, while Pro is the direct route to clean output and PDF or SVG exports. Look elsewhere if those paid constraints do not fit your budget or if a specialized mapping workflow matters more than Datawrapper’s broader publishing toolkit.
