Overview

Rosebud analyzes entries for moods, topics, relationships, and patterns, making it more than a place to store a chronological record. Its privacy measures include encryption in transit and at rest, restricted and audit-logged production access, and authentication with two-factor authentication. Rosebud says content sent to AI providers is anonymized, covered by Business Associate Agreements and Zero Data Retention agreements, and discarded after processing. Users can request account deletion, though journal data may remain in Google Firestore backups for up to 30 days before permanent removal.

Rosebud is built for journaling and emotional reflection, including between therapy sessions. It does not replace professional mental health care, therapy, medical advice, diagnosis, or crisis support.

Key features

Entry analysis identifies moods, topics, relationships, and patterns, giving reflective writers prompts for what to notice when revisiting an entry. On the web app, Dig Deeper offers Interactive mode, which asks a follow-up question, and Focused mode, which presents three questions to choose from. That choice provides structure without requiring users to formulate the next prompt themselves. But weekly AI usage is limited: reaching the cap blocks Dig Deeper until the limit resets or the user upgrades, even though writing entries remains available.

Long-term memory can recall details from earlier entries, and is automatically enabled for Rosebud Bloom subscribers. Voice journaling supports speech-to-text transcription and text-to-speech playback, useful for people who prefer speaking or listening to their journal. The mobile app adds custom journals, editable daily check-ins, photos, handwritten-journal scanning, AI model selection, and language changes. Those mobile-only tools make the phone app the fuller choice for capturing varied material.

Rosebud says journal data is encrypted in transit and at rest, production access is restricted and audit-logged, and access requires coordinated authentication with 2FA. AI-provider submissions are described as anonymized and covered by Business Associate Agreements and Zero Data Retention agreements, then discarded after processing. Account deletion can be requested; journal data may remain in Google Firestore backups for up to 30 days before permanent removal.

Pricing

Rosebud has a free plan and a 7-day trial. Free suits readers who want to journal without paying, but AI usage is tracked weekly and Dig Deeper becomes unavailable at the limit until it resets or they upgrade.

Free: 0.00 USD per free. It provides a no-cost way to use Rosebud, with the weekly AI limit as the key constraint.
Rosebud Bloom Monthly: 12.99 USD per month, billed $12.99/mo. Bloom is the paid subscription and automatically enables long-term memory, making it the more relevant option for people who want Rosebud to recall earlier entries.
Rosebud Bloom Annual: 107.99 USD per year, billed $107.99/yr and shown as $8.99/mo, with a crossed-out $155.99/yr and a 30% saving. It suits subscribers willing to pay annually for the lower displayed monthly equivalent.

Bloom is the choice for readers who want long-term memory and fewer interruptions to deeper reflection; the free tier is better for basic journaling or trying the service. Rosebud's weekly usage cap still matters to anyone relying on AI features.

Platforms

Rosebud is available on Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. The web app has Dig Deeper modes, while the mobile app adds capture and customization features such as photo attachments and scanning handwritten journals.

Who it's for

Choose Rosebud if you want a private journal paired with AI-guided reflection, voice capture, and tools for noticing emotional patterns over time. It is less suitable if you need unlimited AI exploration, clinical guidance, or crisis support; Rosebud explicitly does not provide those forms of care.

Pros and cons

Pros: Entry analysis and two Dig Deeper modes turn writing into structured reflection; voice transcription and playback accommodate speaking and listening; mobile-only photo, handwriting-scanning, and custom-journal tools broaden how entries can be captured.
Pros: Rosebud describes concrete safeguards for stored data and AI processing, including encryption, restricted and logged access, anonymization, and deletion after processing by AI providers.
Cons: Weekly AI limits can interrupt Dig Deeper, although users can still write while waiting for a reset or upgrading.
Cons: Bloom is required for long-term memory to be automatically enabled, and deletion may take up to 30 days to remove journal data from backups.
Cons: The app is not a substitute for professional care, medical advice, diagnosis, or crisis support.

Verdict

Rosebud is a strong fit for people who want guided, AI-assisted self-reflection around their own journal entries, particularly across web and mobile. Its entry analysis, voice tools, and mobile capture options are compelling reasons to choose it; the weekly AI cap and its explicit boundary against clinical care are reasons to look elsewhere if you need uninterrupted AI access or professional support.
