Overview

CurseForge is a catalog for finding and downloading Minecraft mods and modpacks. It is best suited to players who want to browse a large selection across several mod loaders and organize or share modpacks; the free catalog makes Premium optional rather than a prerequisite.

Part of the Overwolf family, CurseForge dates to 2010 and is based in Ramat Gan, Israel. Its Minecraft catalog shows more than 10,000 projects, and the mods are free to download. Premium instead sells convenience: fewer interruptions, direct downloads and desktop customization.

Key features

Filters for game version and support for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt help narrow the catalog. Project pages include dependency information, useful when checking what a mod relies on, while download tracking and mod collections help manage selections. These tools aid discovery and organization, but do not establish that every combination will work on a particular setup.

CurseForge supports modpack downloads, built-in publishing and server tools. Packs can be exported as a CurseForge .zip or shared by profile code, which is more useful for players maintaining or passing along a setup than for someone who only wants a single mod. API access also supports integrations.

Premium removes ads across CurseForge platforms and the desktop client and offers direct downloads without waiting delays. Premium desktop access adds custom themes and layout customization. The desktop client runs on Windows, macOS and Linux; the catalog is also available on the web.

CurseForge says authors receive 70% of subscription income and cites more than $18 million paid to creators since 2020 and over $20 million overall. That gives Premium a creator-support rationale in addition to its convenience features.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes web catalog access to Minecraft mods and modpacks. Since the mods are free, this is the practical choice for readers who can accept ads and download delays and do not need Premium desktop customization.

The Monthly Subscription costs 2.99 USD per month and includes ad-free access, instant downloads and Premium web and desktop access. The Annual Subscription is billed annually at $30.00 (listed from $35.88), advertised as saving 16%, and includes the same Premium benefits. The annual option fits readers who expect to keep using those benefits over the year; monthly billing costs more over twelve months but avoids an annual commitment. Both subscriptions can be cancelled at any time, with access continuing through the current billing cycle.

Premium Monthly and Premium Annual are also described as plans, but those entries give no separate price beyond the subscription terms above. Premium access is available on web and desktop, and after it ends an account returns to free membership. Refunds are generally not offered, though exceptions are considered individually; payment processing is handled by Tebex. Review that policy before paying, particularly for an annual plan.

Platforms

CurseForge's catalog is web-based, and Premium extends access to the desktop client. The client supports Windows, macOS and Linux. Readers who want to browse without installing a client can use the web catalog; desktop customization is reserved for Premium desktop access.

Who it's for

CurseForge is a strong fit for Minecraft players who want a broad catalog, version and loader filters, dependency details, and ways to assemble and share modpacks. Premium makes more sense for frequent users who value ad-free browsing and direct downloads, or who want to customize the desktop client. Casual users and anyone mainly seeking free mods can stay on the free plan.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 10,000 projects and support for four mod loaders give players a broad starting point for discovery.
Pros: Version filters, dependency information, collections and tracking help users evaluate and organize mods.
Pros: Modpack export and profile-code sharing help users distribute a setup.
Pros: Free catalog access keeps the paid plan optional, while Premium directly addresses ads and download waits.
Cons: Premium's main benefits are convenience and customization, so paying adds little for readers content with ads and waiting.
Cons: The general refund policy is restrictive, making the annual commitment less appealing to anyone uncertain about continued use.

Alternatives

Modrinth is another freemium option, with web and desktop-platform availability and a Modrinth+ plan at 4.99 USD per month that includes ad-free browsing, creator support and a profile badge. Choose it if those paid benefits better match what you want to support; CurseForge's stated Premium price is lower and emphasizes direct downloads and desktop customization.

FreeMinecraftMods suits readers focused on a public workflow with no build cap, where generation and export do not require a plan and saving or publishing requires sign-in.

ModDex is a free option for users who want to rate, review, vote, manage a library, create stacks, follow projects or receive notifications through a free account.

MineSpecs may fit readers looking for free browser-based tools and downloads without an account or ads.

Other free web alternatives include GameBanana, MC百科, Minecraft Inside and ModBay.

For broader browsing, compare the Minecraft Mod Browsers and Game Mod Repositories lists. Players looking for a narrower tool can also consult Minecraft Schematic Tools, Minecraft Minimap Mods, Game Mod Managers and Minecraft Modpack Builders.

Verdict

Choose CurseForge if you want a substantial free Minecraft mod catalog with useful version, loader and dependency information, plus tools for managing and sharing modpacks. Premium is worth considering for regular users who want ad-free access and direct downloads, but readers satisfied with the free catalog should not pay just to reach the mods. The generally unavailable refunds make checking the subscription terms especially important before choosing annual billing.
