Overview

Qt Creator is an IDE for building desktop, embedded, mobile, and browser-based applications, with C++ and QML at its center. It is best suited to developers working across Qt’s supported targets who want one environment for interface work, builds, tests, and debugging. Its breadth is a strength, but commercial Qt development brings licensing obligations that make the free edition a less straightforward choice for business projects.

Its workflow spans project creation and UI design through coding, deployment, running, and debugging. Python support is more limited: language services depend on having a language server available.

Compare it with other options in Integrated Development Environments, C++ IDEs, or Mobile Development IDEs.

Key features

Editing and builds

The editor combines semantic highlighting and syntax checks with completion, search, and refactoring. That makes it well equipped for day-to-day C++ and QML work, while the conditional Python language services are not a reason to choose it as a Python-first IDE. Build integration covers CMake, qmake, Qbs, and Autotools; generic projects can also be imported with configurable build commands.

Debugging and testing

Integrated debuggers and analysis tools support memory-leak detection, execution profiling, and CPU analysis. Unit-testing integrations cover Boost.Test, Catch2, Google Test, Qt Quick Test, and Qt Test, with CTest support as well. This combination is useful for teams that want testing and diagnosis alongside editing and builds rather than relying on a separate workflow.

Extensions and project work

Project-management and build tools are included, as is dev container support. Qt Creator supports AI agents, with GitHub Copilot and an MCP Server extension documented. Qt does not vet external vendor extensions for security flaws or malicious intent, so users should assess an extension before installing it.

Qt also offers official extensions for Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, and Android Studio, plus a Qt-supported CLion extension. Developers already committed to those environments can add Qt tooling there instead of moving all work into Qt Creator.

Pricing

Qt Creator is freemium. The Qt Creator Open Source plan costs 0.00 USD per free. The open-source version is available, but Qt framework use is subject to LGPL/GPL obligations; this is not simply a no-cost route without license considerations.

Commercial Qt licenses have custom pricing and include Qt Creator among the Qt tools. A designated developer license is required for each developer using Qt commercially, and distribution licenses may also be required for Qt-based devices. Subscriptions are typically invoiced as pre-payment for a one-year or three-year term and auto-renew. The page’s paid-from figure is €546/user/yr; the actual commercial license terms and any device distribution needs matter when estimating a project’s cost.

A 10-day commercial evaluation is available, but it is for evaluation, not production or actual product development. Developers choosing between the free and paid routes should base that decision on how they will use and distribute Qt, not just the IDE’s feature set.

Platforms

Qt Creator targets Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows application development. Its binary packages are available for Linux, macOS, and Windows, so the target range is broader than the operating systems for which the IDE itself is packaged.

Who it's for

Qt Creator is a strong fit for developers building Qt-based C++ or QML applications across desktop, embedded, mobile, or browser targets, especially when they value integrated build, test, and debugging tools. It is less compelling as a general Python environment, and commercial teams need to account for developer and potentially device licensing before committing.

Pros and cons

Broad lifecycle coverage: project setup, UI design, coding, build, deployment, testing, and debugging sit within one IDE.
Flexible build and test integration: support for multiple build systems and common unit-testing frameworks suits varied Qt project workflows.
Open-source entry point: the free edition allows evaluation and use subject to LGPL/GPL obligations.
Commercial licensing complexity: developer licenses are required for commercial Qt use, and device distribution licenses may add another obligation.
Extension security is user-borne: external vendor extensions are not checked by Qt for malicious intent or security flaws.

Alternatives

Choose CLion if its non-commercial free offer for individual learning, self-education, or open-source contributions fits your work better. Xojo is another freemium option for readers considering a desktop or mobile plan with a stated one-time price. For a free IDE with an Apache 2.0 license and no trial, Apache NetBeans is a different starting point. Omnis Studio offers a lifetime-free Community Edition, with deployment limited by concurrent users.

BlueJ, Code::Blocks, Eclipse IDE, and Eric are other options to compare.

Verdict

Choose Qt Creator for Qt-centered C++ and QML development when you need a cross-target workflow with integrated builds, testing, and debugging. Its main advantage is that breadth in a single environment; its main drawback for commercial teams is the licensing burden around both development and distribution. If that cost and compliance model does not suit the project, compare alternatives before standardizing on it.
