Overview

Crazy Egg brings heatmaps, session recordings, web analytics, A/B testing, surveys, popup calls to action, conversion analytics and error tracking into one website-focused product. That makes it useful for teams that want to investigate visitor behavior and act on what they find without splitting those jobs across several tools. It is a less suitable fit for buyers who need monthly paid billing or uninterrupted tracking beyond a fixed quota.

Installation uses a code snippet in the site head, with integrations for Drupal, Google Tag Manager, Joomla, Magento, Segment, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix and WordPress. Conversion and survey notifications can go to email, Slack, an API endpoint or Zapier; Google Analytics 4 supplies traffic data for A/B tests. An API can also create and update heatmaps and show results in other applications.

Key features

Behavior reports

Click, Scroll, Confetti, Overlay and List heatmaps offer different views of visitor interaction, while recordings show individual sessions. Mobile capture and rage-click detection help teams examine friction on mobile pages and spot repeated clicks that may signal a problem. The range is useful for diagnosing website journeys, though report and recording allowances vary considerably by plan.

Conversion and privacy tools

Surveys, conversion analytics, A/B testing, popup CTAs and error tracking extend the product beyond observation into optimization. Recording fields for email, passwords, numbers and text, as well as slider and dial controls, are automatically masked client-side before data reaches the servers. Crazy Egg says it encrypts data in transit and at rest, anonymizes IP addresses, and complies with GDPR, CCPA and HIPAA obligations.

Pricing

Crazy Egg has a free plan and a 30-day trial of paid plans. The trial requires a credit card, but billing starts only after it ends. All paid plans are billed annually, and there are no overage charges: once a monthly tracking limit is reached, collection pauses until the first of the next month. That predictable ceiling avoids surprise usage charges but can leave growing sites without new data late in a billing month.

Plan	Price and limits	Best fit
Free	0.00 USD per free. Includes Web Analytics, Instant Heatmaps, Conversion Analytics and website Surveys. Instant Heatmaps track up to 1,000 sessions per day and retain 30 days of data; free heatmaps are available indefinitely without a credit card or website limit.	A sensible starting point for site owners who want core analysis without a paid commitment.
Starter	29.00 USD per month, billed annually; 5,000 tracked pageviews/mo, 5 Heatmap Reports, 50 Recordings/mo and 6 months of recording storage.	Small sites with modest traffic and a limited need for reports or recordings.
Plus	99.00 USD per month, billed annually; 150,000 tracked pageviews/mo, 75 Heatmap Reports, 1,000 Recordings/mo and 2 years of recording storage.	Teams that have outgrown Starter and need a substantial increase in monthly analysis capacity.
Pro	249.00 USD per month, billed annually; 500,000 tracked pageviews/mo, 100 Heatmap Reports, 5,000 Recordings/mo and 2 years of recording storage.	Higher-traffic organizations that need larger recording and pageview allowances.
Enterprise	599.00 USD per month, billed annually; 1,000,000 tracked pageviews/mo, 200 Heatmap Reports, 10,000 Recordings/mo and 2 years of recording storage.	Sites with the largest published quotas; the annual commitment and fixed ceiling still matter.

Every plan includes unlimited website domains and team members, so agencies and multi-site teams avoid per-domain and per-seat charges. The free tier offers useful tools and generous heatmap access, but its session cap and 30-day retention make it different from the paid recording quotas. Starter sharply limits monthly pageviews and reports compared with higher tiers; moving up buys capacity rather than additional seats or domains. Recording retention rises from six months on Starter to two years on Plus and above.

Platforms

Crazy Egg supports web, API and browser extension platforms. Data is stored in the United States on Amazon Web Services, with replication across data centers and daily, weekly and monthly backups. Session recordings are retained for 24 months and then automatically deleted; customers can contact the dedicated support team by email.

Who it's for

Entrepreneurs, small businesses, growth marketers, agencies, ecommerce companies, education and lead-generation businesses, and UX/UI designers are among the audiences Crazy Egg serves. It can also suit people dissatisfied with Google Analytics who want visual behavior reports and conversion tools alongside web analytics. The unlimited seats and domains particularly benefit agencies, while teams with traffic that can exceed their selected pageview allowance should weigh the collection pause carefully.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free Instant Heatmaps have no website limit, and the Free plan includes analytics, conversion analytics and surveys.
Pros: Unlimited team members and website domains on all plans avoid seat and domain fees.
Pros: Heatmaps, recordings and conversion features cover investigation and optimization in one website product.
Cons: Paid plans are billed annually, limiting flexibility for buyers who want a month-to-month commitment.
Cons: Collection pauses at the monthly tracking limit, so unused capacity cannot be supplemented by paying an overage.
Cons: Starter allows just 5,000 tracked pageviews and 50 recordings a month, which may be restrictive for busier sites.

Alternatives

Microsoft Clarity is worth considering for a free option with unlimited heatmaps, websites, team members and no traffic limits. Zoho PageSense has a free tier capped at 5,000 monthly tracked users, one project, one month of retention and five goals. Fullstory offers a free tier with 30,000 sessions, 10 user seats and one-year session replay retention.

Matomo may suit teams looking for a free, self-hosted community plan with unlimited users and hits. Mouseflow has a free plan capped at 500 sessions monthly, one website project and one conversion funnel. UXCam offers a free plan with 3,000 sessions monthly and two app keys. OpenReplay offers an open-source, self-managed option for on-premises or cloud deployment. Inspectlet is another freemium alternative.

Readers comparing categories can browse heatmap and session replay tools, session recording software, session replay software and A/B testing tools.

Verdict

Crazy Egg is a strong fit for website teams that want heatmaps, recordings and conversion tools together, especially agencies that benefit from unlimited seats and domains. Its free heatmaps make a low-risk starting point, and paid tiers scale published quotas substantially. Choose another product if annual billing or a tracking pause at the monthly limit would disrupt your work.
