Overview

PaddleOCR is an open-source OCR and document-processing toolkit for turning images and PDFs into text and structured data. It best suits developers and teams building document workflows across devices or deployment environments. Its breadth is a strength; the main caveat is that code written for version 2.x may not run on 3.x.

Key features

Multilingual recognition: PaddleOCR-VL parses documents in 109 languages, while PP-OCRv6 supports 50 languages in one model. The two figures cover distinct capabilities; they are not a claim that every model supports all 109 languages.
Handwriting and structure: PaddleOCR 3.0 supports handwriting recognition. PP-StructureV3 converts complex PDFs and document images to Markdown and JSON while preserving structure, and table extraction is supported. That makes the project relevant to workflows that need more than plain text, though no recognition-accuracy figures are provided.
Document intelligence: PP-ChatOCRv4 extracts key information from large document collections and integrates ERNIE 4.5. Asynchronous processing is supported, useful for processing flows that do not require an immediate result.
Flexible access and deployment: Models can be used online through the official website or called through an API. Documentation covers local, C++, service, Android, iOS, browser, and other deployments. Python, TypeScript, and Go SDKs are supported.
Permissive licensing: The software may be used, copied, modified, published, distributed, sublicensed, and sold without restriction. MCP and Skills services include official Agent Skills; support is available through GitHub Issues, and OCR courses are offered through AIStudio.
Hardware and ecosystem: Support includes Kunlunxin, Ascend, and other domestic hardware. PaddleOCR is used in open-source projects including Umi-OCR, OmniParser, MinerU, and RAGFlow, and PaddleOCR OCEAN is an ecosystem alliance for global OCR and document-intelligence partners.

Pricing

PaddleOCR is free, with a free plan. The Official API Free Tier has custom pricing and allows up to 20,000 pages of document parsing per day. A separate monthly page limit is 20,000 pages, so users should account for both daily and monthly limits when sizing recurring workloads. No paid plan is described, making this a strong fit for teams comfortable working with open-source software and API limits rather than a packaged, priced subscription.

Platforms

Android and iOS are listed as platforms. The deployment documentation also covers local and service use, C++, and browsers, giving developers more ways to integrate the models than a mobile-only listing suggests. That flexibility is valuable for building across environments, but the project is not presented as a conventional desktop scanning app.

Who it's for

PaddleOCR fits developers and organizations that need multilingual OCR, handwriting recognition, document structure or table extraction, and freedom to deploy or adapt software under a permissive license. It is especially compelling for teams building document pipelines that can use the API or manage local deployments. A reader who wants a simple, ready-made scanning application may prefer a more focused app.

Pros and cons

Pro: The license permits commercial use and modification without restriction, giving builders room to adapt the software.
Pro: Multilingual parsing, handwriting recognition, and structured Markdown or JSON output cover more than basic text capture.
Pro: Local, service, mobile, browser, C++, and API paths support varied deployment needs.
Con: The 2.x-to-3.x compatibility break may require code changes before an upgrade.
Con: The official API free tier is bounded by daily and monthly page limits, which can constrain sustained high-volume use.
Con: The project’s breadth and deployment options favor builders; they may be excessive for someone seeking a straightforward scanning app.

Alternatives

OCRmyPDF is a free, self-hosted option for readers who want a PDF-focused tool and are comfortable installing external OCR and PDF tools.

FreeOCR.AI is worth considering for readers who prefer a freemium service with web and desktop platforms; its Monthly Pro plan is 10.00 USD per month for 10,000 credits per month, while Yearly Pro is 80.00 USD per year for 120,000 credits.

i2OCR suits a simple web workflow where processing one image or PDF page at a time is enough.

Tesseract OCR is another free option for readers looking for OCR on Linux, Windows, macOS, or Android.

Scribe OCR is a free, open-source web application for readers who want that form of self-hosted or web access.

Prizmo is an alternative for readers focused on iOS or macOS OCR, with premium and cloud plan options.

docTR is another free OCR option for Linux, Windows, or macOS.

ABBYY FineReader PDF is a paid alternative for readers seeking a PDF product with iOS, macOS, and Windows support.

Verdict

Choose PaddleOCR if you are building a document workflow and want multilingual recognition, structured extraction, permissive licensing, and multiple deployment paths without a software fee. Its main advantage is how much OCR and document processing it brings within reach of developers; look elsewhere if you need a ready-made scanning app or cannot accommodate API quotas and the 2.x-to-3.x compatibility break.
