Overview

InSpec turns security, compliance, and policy requirements into executable rules, then compares them with a system’s actual state. That makes it a practical fit when teams want audits to live alongside infrastructure work rather than rely only on manual reviews. Its hybrid model supports checks across local and cloud targets, but production adoption brings commercial licensing requirements.

It can assess applications and infrastructure locally or against cloud services and environments such as Linux in Docker containers. For readers comparing Infrastructure Testing Tools and Security Configuration Management Software, InSpec combines code-driven checks with reusable compliance profiles.

Key features

Reusable profiles

Profiles group controls into artifacts that can be versioned and assigned platform requirements and dependencies. This gives teams a maintainable way to share and evolve checks, rather than rebuilding each audit from scratch.

Cloud coverage and extensibility

Built-in resources support tests for AWS, Azure, AliCloud, and GCP infrastructure, and users can create custom resources. That breadth helps teams apply a common testing approach across cloud environments, while custom resources leave room for requirements beyond the built-in coverage.

Testing and reporting

InSpec runs locally or against services and infrastructure, including Linux in Docker containers. The kitchen-inspec verifier also connects profiles to Test Kitchen, making it relevant to teams that already use that testing workflow. Results can be exported as JSON, HTML, or plain text, or sent to Chef Automate, giving teams options for review and onward reporting.

Compliance content and license considerations

Chef offers premium CIS- and STIG-based profiles for enterprise compliance scanning. InSpec 7 requires EULA acceptance, and the need for a license key depends on the distribution source. The Chef Licensing Telemetry service collects activation, usage, environment, and bug data on Free and Trial tiers; it is disabled for Commercial users. Teams choosing a free evaluation should account for that telemetry, while commercial users should confirm the applicable distribution and licensing terms.

Pricing

Chef InSpec uses a freemium model, with a 30-day trial and paid use from $59/yr. The plan terms distinguish evaluation and personal use from production licensing:

Free: 0.00 USD per free for unlimited duration, for non-production workloads and personal, non-commercial use. It is useful for individual learning or eligible projects, but it is not a route to free commercial or production deployment.
Trial: 0.00 USD per free for 30 days, for non-production product evaluation. Community Slack support is available during the trial, but the time limit makes it unsuitable as an ongoing operating plan.
Commercial: custom pricing, renewable, for production and non-production workloads, with entitlements based on the purchase order. Contract support is available; buyers need to establish scope and entitlements through that purchase.

The $59/yr starting figure does not replace the plan-specific terms: production use falls under Commercial licensing, whose price is custom.

Platforms

Chef InSpec supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows environments. Chef documents native installers for Windows and Linux distributions, plus Habitat packages for macOS, Windows, and Linux distributions. Community Slack support serves Free and Trial tiers; Commercial licenses include contract support.

Who it's for

InSpec is a good fit for teams that can express policy as code and need reusable controls across cloud infrastructure, local targets, or containerized Linux. It is especially relevant where versioned profiles, custom resources, or Test Kitchen integration match existing workflows. It is a weaker fit for personal or non-commercial users who need production deployment, and for teams that do not want a code-centered approach to compliance checks.

Pros and cons

Pros: Versionable profiles with platform requirements and dependencies support repeatable audits across teams and environments.
Pros: AWS, Azure, AliCloud, and GCP resources, plus custom resources, provide broad cloud coverage and extensibility.
Pros: Local and remote targets, Test Kitchen integration, and several output formats support different testing and reporting workflows.
Cons: Free use excludes production and commercial workloads, so organizations must budget for a commercial license to use it operationally.
Cons: Free and Trial tiers enable licensing telemetry that collects usage and environment data, a consideration for teams with strict data policies.

Alternatives

Mondoo CSPM is worth considering when free scanning for cloud, Kubernetes, operating systems, SaaS, and APIs, together with asset inventory and an extensible provider system, is the priority.

Kubescape is a free, self-hosted open-source option with a CLI and Kubernetes operator for teams centered on those tools.

Lynis offers free and open-source GPLv3 software, with an Enterprise SaaS option at 3.00 USD per year, billed $3 / system / month.

OpenSCAP is a free open-source choice for teams seeking tools under its project umbrella.

Prowler Cloud may suit teams that want a 15-day trial with no cloud account limit and access to every check and compliance framework.

Qualys External Attack Surface Management offers a 30-day, no-cost trial of CSAM with EASM for readers evaluating that scope.

DigitalOcean Cloud Security Posture Management is an alternative for users seeking unlimited manual scans for standard rules on its free plan.

Puppet is another freemium infrastructure software option, with custom-priced Enterprise plans.

Verdict

Choose Chef InSpec if your team wants policy checks expressed as code, reusable profiles, and flexible cloud and local assessment targets. The decisive drawback is its licensing boundary: free use is not for production or commercial work, so teams needing operational deployment should be ready for custom-priced Commercial licensing.
