Overview

Rclone is a free, open-source command-line program for managing files on cloud storage. It is best suited to people comfortable with commands, scripts, or APIs who need to move, synchronise, back up, or mount files across services. Its breadth and automation options make it a capable utility, but it is a poor fit if you want a finished graphical file manager.

Key features

Support for more than 70 cloud storage products—including Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, and Backblaze B2—lets rclone connect services in a single workflow. It can copy changed files, run one-way sync, or use bisync for two-way sync. MD5 and SHA1 checks, timestamp preservation, and restartable operations help with long-running transfers and restores. Where providers permit server-side transfers, data can move between them without passing through local disk, reducing local bandwidth use.

Rclone also mounts local, cloud, and virtual filesystems as disks, or serves files over SFTP, HTTP, WebDAV, FTP, and DLNA. Virtual backends can encrypt, compress, chunk, hash, or combine remotes. Shell pipelines, dry runs, scripts, and an API make it adaptable to automated workflows, though the command-line focus raises the learning curve for people who expect to browse and manage files graphically. The web-based GUI is experimental, so it should not be the reason to choose rclone.

The crypt remote encrypts file contents before upload and decrypts them after download; file and directory names are encrypted by default, though they can be left visible. File length and modification time are not encrypted. The crypt password is only lightly obscured in the configuration file, so users who cannot keep that file secure should enable configuration encryption. This is useful client-side protection, but it does not conceal all metadata or remove the need to protect credentials.

Pricing

Rclone costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the open-source project, maintained by volunteers and Nick Craig-Wood; there is no separate paid plan or free trial to weigh against it. It is a strong fit for individuals and technical teams able to operate and maintain their own workflows. Business sponsorship can include support contracts, advertising deals, and consultancy.

Platforms

Rclone supports Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Plan 9, Solaris, and Android. Android builds are available but are not yet first-class builds. For release v1.75.1, the listed minimums are Linux kernel 3.2, macOS 12 Monterey, and Windows 10 or Server 2016. It can mount drives and schedule synchronisation, but it has no mobile apps. The command-line tool can also be used through an API and on self-hosted systems; the project provides a support forum and describes its support community as friendly.

Who it's for

Rclone is a good choice for technically confident users who need one utility for cloud transfers, backup and restore, synchronisation, or mounting across providers. Its server-side transfer option and scripting support are particularly useful when moving data between services or automating repeatable jobs. Choose another tool if a polished GUI or a mobile app is central to your workflow, or if you need encryption to hide file sizes and modification times.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 70 storage integrations, combined with server-side transfers where possible, make cross-provider work practical without routing every transfer through local storage.
Pro: Changed-file copies, one-way sync, bisync, restartable operations, and hash checks cover a broad range of transfer and backup needs.
Pro: Mounting, serving, virtual backends, scripts, and an API give technical users options beyond basic copying.
Con: Command-line operation is the main interface, and the web GUI is experimental; users seeking a finished graphical tool may find it unsuitable.
Con: Crypt leaves file length and modification time exposed, while the password needs configuration encryption for stronger protection at rest.
Con: Android builds are not first-class, and there are no mobile apps.

Alternatives

CloudDrive2 may suit readers looking for a freemium option with a Basic plan that permits up to two cloud drives and one local mount.
FolderSync is an alternative to consider for an Android app; its free Android app includes ads.
Air Explorer is worth considering if a graphical freemium option fits better: its free BASIC plan allows one account per cloud, read-only cloud-to-cloud transfers, and two simultaneous uploads and downloads.
Cyberduck is a freemium option for macOS and Windows, licensed under the GPL.
ExpanDrive offers a free plan for personal use, with up to 10 users or devices per year and community support.
Owlfiles may suit users who need a connection-based pricing option: its free Basic plan allows three connections, while Pro is 1.99 USD per month for unlimited connections.
filex is another free option for Linux, macOS, Windows, web, API, and self-hosted use.
GoodSync is an alternative to compare if its workstation or server licensing better matches your setup.

Readers comparing protocol-focused tools can also browse WebDAV Client Software, File transfer services, and Cloud Backup Services.

Verdict

Choose rclone if you are comfortable with command-line tools and need broad cloud support, flexible transfers, and automation without a software fee. Its main advantage is the range of operations and providers it brings into one utility; its main reason to look elsewhere is the command-line-first experience, compounded by an experimental GUI and encryption that does not conceal all metadata.
