Overview

reNamerX is a free desktop tool for applying repeatable naming rules to batches of files. It suits people who want more than simple find-and-replace across Linux, macOS, or Windows, without a software bill. Preview and undo reduce the risk of bulk edits, but this is a file renamer, not a folder renamer.

Text operations, case changes, numbering, regular expressions, and metadata-based names give it room for both routine cleanup and more tailored schemes. Its safeguards make it a sensible candidate for large batches; users who need to rename directories themselves should look elsewhere.

Key features

Rules cover text changes, case transformation, and sequential numbering. Regular expressions extend those basics for more complex patterns, while metadata such as creation date and file size can contribute to names; the guide also documents date and time insertion. Reusable presets are useful when the same naming convention comes around again.

A live preview shows proposed names before changes are applied, and batch operations can be undone with Ctrl+Z; redo is also supported. Those protections matter when one rule can affect hundreds of files. Browse Files selects individual items, while Browse Folder selects files in a directory. That folder-based selection does not extend to renaming folders themselves.

The interface has dark and cyberpunk themes. These offer presentation choices, while the stronger practical draw is the combination of flexible rules and a preview before committing them.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free. reNamerX is distributed under the MIT License, and no paid tier or usage cap is stated. It is a straightforward fit for users who want a no-cost desktop renamer rather than a subscription or one-time purchase.

Platforms

reNamerX supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. Windows installation requires Windows 10 or newer, a 64-bit system, and at least 50MB of free disk space; 4GB of RAM is recommended. The repository provides MSI and EXE installer options. Building from source calls for Node.js 16 or newer, npm or yarn, Rust and Cargo, and Git, so compiling it is best left to users comfortable with that toolchain. For installation problems, guidance points users to open a GitHub issue.

Who it's for

Choose reNamerX if you routinely rename groups of files and want rules that range from basic text changes to regex and metadata, with preview and undo before and after a batch. It is less suitable when directory names themselves are the target, or when Windows requirements or source-build dependencies make installation inconvenient.

Pros and cons

Pros: Flexible rule set. Text operations, case changes, numbering, regex, metadata, and reusable presets cover more than one-off renaming.
Pros: Batch safeguards. A live preview and undo/redo help manage changes across hundreds of files.
Pros: Free and open-source. The MIT License and 0.00 USD per free plan make it accessible across three desktop platforms.
Cons: No folder renaming. Selecting files in a folder does not let users rename the folder itself.
Cons: Windows has concrete prerequisites. Windows 10 or newer, 64-bit architecture, and 50MB of space are required, with 4GB RAM recommended.
Cons: Source builds need several tools. Node.js, a package manager, Rust/Cargo, and Git add setup work for users who do not use the installers.

Alternatives

Browse file renaming software to compare more options. Bulk Renamer is another free, open-source MIT option for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with no account, trial, or watermark. Nomina is also free across those three desktop platforms, with no paid plans or usage limits stated. PBRenamer is a free cross-platform choice under GPL-3.0.

RenameKit suits readers willing to pay for a lifetime license: it offers a 3-day full-feature trial, then limits batches to 20 items, and costs 9.99 USD per once. Advanced Renamer may fit Windows and macOS users who want a stated free allowance of 10,000 files and five methods per batch, with a Personal tier for unlimited batches and methods at custom pricing. Ant Renamer is a free Windows-only option with source code available.

ReNamer is Windows-only: its free Lite version is for non-commercial use and allows up to five rules and five presets, while Pro costs 29.95 USD per once. Renamer.ai is another freemium option, available on the web, Windows, and macOS.

Verdict

reNamerX is a strong fit for people who need free, repeatable batch renaming across desktop platforms and value preview and recovery alongside regex and metadata rules. Choose it for file-level flexibility without paid tiers; look elsewhere if folder renaming is essential or its installation requirements do not suit your system.
