Overview

Bonita brings process design and application development into a governed environment, with tools for both technical and business users. Its intended settings include banking and insurance, public services, healthcare, and aerospace and defense, where process control and oversight can matter as much as automation.

The product is presented by Ofelia, headquartered in Paris. The company says it began in 2009 as Bonitasoft and became Ofelia in 2026. Bonita supports on-premise and self-hosted deployment, including in a customer’s own cloud, with configurable data residency. That flexibility is valuable to organizations with infrastructure or residency requirements, though it means the platform is oriented toward deliberate enterprise deployment rather than a lightweight hosted workflow tool.

Key features

Modeling and application building

Bonita Fabric’s Process Designer turns natural-language descriptions into BPMN models, giving teams a way to move from process explanations to structured designs. BPA Studio handles more complex rules, integrations and SLA enforcement, while the low-code UI Builder creates forms, dashboards and application views. Together, these tools cover both the process logic and the interfaces people use to work through it.

Bonita Work Hub offers business and IT teams AI-assisted prompting and visual builders for creating process applications without code. That broadens participation beyond developers, while BPA Studio remains available for more involved implementations. The platform also supports event triggers, human approvals and execution observability, useful capabilities for workflows that need intervention and operational visibility rather than unattended automation alone.

AI, integrations and controls

The product lists OpenAI and Mistral connectors, an AI Agent Orchestrator, and document processing that extracts, classifies and structures documents. These capabilities point to ways AI can participate in process work, but they sit alongside a broader process platform rather than defining its whole purpose.

Connectors and APIs cover LDAP and Active Directory, CRM platforms, databases, UiPath, REST APIs, ERP systems and Jira. Bonita also provides REST and Java APIs for interacting with its runtime. Enterprise includes role-based access control, SSO through SAML or OIDC, audit trails and SLA enforcement. Ofelia says it is ISO 27001 certified and describes premium enterprise support with direct access to senior engineers and no tiered support model; those are relevant advantages for organizations that prioritize governance and support access.

Pricing

Bonita Free: 0.00 USD per free. It allows 150 process instances per month, has no time limit, requires no credit card and is community-supported. The maker positions it for testing and small-scale deployment. The absence of a time limit makes it practical for ongoing experiments, but the 150-instance monthly ceiling is restrictive for production processes with regular volume.

Bonita Enterprise: custom pricing, with a 99.5% uptime SLA. Organizations considering Enterprise should weigh that commitment alongside the need for its governance and support capabilities; the free plan does not include the stated premium enterprise support model.

A free trial is offered. Bonita’s pricing model is freemium, but the free tier’s process quota is the key constraint for teams assessing whether it can support operational workloads.

Platforms

Bonita is available through web, API, self-hosted and hybrid deployment options, with support for Linux, Windows and macOS (Intel) downloads. Its deployment choices suit organizations that need control over infrastructure or data residency, while API access supports integration with other systems.

Who it's for

Bonita is best suited to organizations coordinating complex, regulated or mission-critical processes that need modeling, application building, integrations and governance in one platform. Banking and insurance, public sector, healthcare, and aerospace and defense are among its intended sectors. Smaller teams with only a few lightweight workflows may find the enterprise breadth and self-hosting orientation unnecessary, and the free quota is too low to assume substantial ongoing use.

Pros and cons

Broad process toolkit: BPMN design, rule handling, low-code interfaces, approvals and observability address multiple stages of process delivery.
Deployment control: On-premise and self-hosted options with configurable data residency can suit organizations with infrastructure constraints.
Governance and support: Enterprise includes access controls, SSO, audit trails and SLA enforcement, alongside a stated uptime SLA and senior-engineer support.
Small free allowance: 150 process instances per month limits the free edition to evaluation and modest deployments.
Enterprise cost requires a conversation: Enterprise has custom pricing, so teams must obtain a quote to assess its fit against their budget.

Alternatives

For a different process platform, compare Camunda, which also has a free plan and a free self-managed development tier for local development and testing, with production usage listed.

HEFLO may suit readers looking for cloud-stored diagrams, diagram image downloads and import/export on its free Academic plan; its listed platforms include web and mobile.

Open-BPMN is a free option for readers who want a process modeling project led by Imixs, a Munich-based business process management company.

Bizagi Modeler may be a better fit for a solo modeler: its free plan permits one user and unlimited processes and models, with local storage only.

Crismo offers free BPMN 2.0 modeling, diagram versioning and basic PNG and PDF exports on its Individual plan, making it relevant for readers focused on modeling and exports.

ProcessMind gives one member full process access and unlimited models on its free plan, alongside 20 AI credits per month; it may suit a single-user process analysis need.

ADONIS offers a Community Edition configured for one seat and one language with a limited number of processes, an option for readers whose needs fit those constraints.

Flowable is another process platform to consider.

Verdict

Choose Bonita if your organization needs a governed process platform that can span BPMN modeling, application building, integrations and controlled deployment, particularly for complex or regulated work. Its main strength is the breadth of that toolkit and its deployment flexibility; its main drawback for evaluation is a free tier capped at 150 process instances monthly, while Enterprise requires custom pricing. Small teams with simple workflows should look for a narrower tool, and larger organizations should assess Enterprise against their requirements and budget.
