Overview

Nx builds project and task graphs, runs tasks in dependency order, and parallelizes work when possible. That makes it a good fit when a repository contains many related projects and builds need to respect their dependencies. Nx also combines build orchestration with plugin-based code generation and migrations, rather than focusing on task running alone.

Nx Core includes local caching. Nx Cloud adds a remote cache shared across a team and CI, and can distribute work across Nx Agents using task CPU and memory needs to pack work dynamically. These additions target collaborative and CI-heavy workflows; teams that only need local caching may not need the paid cloud layer.

Founded in 2016 by former Googlers Jeff Cross and Victor Savkin, Nx spans Build Automation Software, Monorepo Management Tools and Code Generators.

Key features

Dependency-aware task execution: Nx maps projects and tasks, orders tasks by their dependencies, and runs independent work in parallel when possible. This is useful for coordinated monorepo builds, though its value is less clear for a small project with few dependencies.
Local and shared caching: Core provides local caching; Nx Cloud adds a cache shared by a team and its CI. Shared results can benefit collaborative workflows, but the cloud tier’s credit and connection charges matter as usage grows.
Distributed CI: Nx Cloud distributes tasks across Nx Agents and dynamically packs them according to CPU and memory use. This gives teams a way to distribute CI work without making that a requirement for using Nx Core.
Plugin-driven generation and migrations: Plugins can infer tasks, generate or modify code, update dependencies, and provide executors. That breadth makes Nx more than a task runner, particularly for teams whose technology stack has documented integrations.
Technology and CI integrations: Nx documents support for Angular, React, Vue, Node.js, Java, .NET, Vite, Webpack, Rspack, Jest, Cypress, Playwright and other tools. It also provides CI workflow setup for GitHub, CircleCI, GitLab, Azure Pipelines, Jenkins and Bitbucket Pipelines.
Cloud security controls: Nx Cloud describes trusted-branch cache writes, artifact traceability, and automatic invalidation of artifacts created with revoked tokens. API communications are encrypted in transit, and task artifacts can be encrypted end to end before they are sent to the remote cache.

Pricing

Hobby: 0.00 USD per free, billed Free forever. It includes 50,000 credits that reset monthly, 5 contributors, 10 concurrent CI connections and community support. Nx describes it as suitable for individual developers and small teams exploring Nx Cloud. Once monthly credits run out, Nx Cloud features turn off until the next reset, so it is not a dependable uncapped cloud tier.

Team: 29.00 USD per month, billed $29/month. It includes a $29 usage credit and email support, with additional credits at $5.50 per 10,000, $19 per contributor and $2.25 per concurrent CI connection. The starting price is not the full cost for a team that exceeds included usage or needs more contributors or CI connections, so budget against actual team size and workload.

Enterprise: custom pricing, billed Custom. It includes complete feature access, dedicated support and SLAs, isolated or self-hosted deployment, and SSO/SAML. This is the fit for organizations needing those deployment and support provisions; smaller teams can start with Hobby or Team instead.

Platforms

Nx supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted environments. Its build-system focus and documented CI setup across several providers make it relevant to teams with varied development and CI environments.

Who it's for

Nx is strongest for teams managing JavaScript or TypeScript monorepos, especially where dependency-aware tasks, shared caching, distributed CI, or plugin-based code generation address real coordination needs. Its plugins extend support to other languages, and its documented integrations span popular frameworks, runtimes, bundlers, test tools and CI providers.

Individual developers and small teams can explore Nx Cloud on Hobby, but should account for the monthly credit reset and contributor and connection caps. Teams that need more headroom can consider Team, while organizations that require SSO/SAML, isolated or self-hosted deployment, or dedicated support have an Enterprise option. A project that does not need monorepo orchestration or shared CI capabilities may be better served by a simpler build tool.

Pros and cons

Pro: Task graphs encode dependencies and allow parallel execution where possible, suiting repositories with coordinated build work.
Pro: Nx combines local caching with optional shared caching, distributed CI, code generation and migrations, covering several parts of a monorepo workflow.
Pro: Documented integrations across languages, frameworks, tooling and CI providers broaden its potential fit.
Con: Hobby’s 50,000 monthly credits, 5-contributor and 10-connection caps can constrain a growing team, and cloud features stop when credits are exhausted.
Con: Team’s $29/month starting price can rise with additional credits, contributors and concurrent CI connections.
Con: Teams that only need local caching may have little reason to pay for Nx Cloud’s shared and distributed features.

Alternatives

Bazel is a free, open-source build and test tool from Google; consider it if that tool is a better fit than Nx’s monorepo and Nx Cloud offering.
AWS CodeBuild has a free plan and usage-based billing according to build duration and selected compute type; consider it if that billing model suits your build workload.
Buck2 is Meta’s free build system; consider it as another no-charge build-system option.
Gradle is a free, open-source build system; consider it if that is the build tool you want to use.
Pants is an open-source option under the Apache License 2.0; consider it if a no-charge, royalty-free licensed build tool suits your needs.
Rush is a free, open-source JavaScript monorepo manager installable via npm; consider it if you want a monorepo manager rather than Nx’s broader build and cloud workflow.
Xmake is another free option.
build2 is another free option.

Verdict

Choose Nx if your team needs dependency-aware monorepo task execution and sees value in local caching, shared CI results, distributed work, and plugin-driven generation in one system. Its free Hobby tier provides a measured way to explore Nx Cloud, while Team prices shared usage separately from its starting credit. Look elsewhere if your needs are limited to a basic build tool, or if contributor, connection and usage charges make the cloud workflow a poor fit.
