Overview

Most programmes are available on demand, and each episode page shows how long it will remain available. That makes catch-up listening useful while setting a clear limit: episodes do not necessarily stay in the catalogue indefinitely. Some content, including BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service English, can be heard without signing in.

BBC Sounds is available exclusively to listeners in the UK; access for listeners based outside the UK ended on 21 July 2025. UK residents can use the app abroad for around a month. Outside the UK, BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service English and thousands of hours of podcasts are available on BBC.com and in the BBC app, but international on-demand radio access varies with rights and resources.

Key features

Catch-up and offline listening

Most programmes can be played on demand, and the current BBC mobile app lets listeners download podcast episodes for offline playback. Downloads are practical for travel or unreliable connections, but the offline feature covers podcast episodes, not every radio programme.

Account access and casting

Some listening, including BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service English, does not require signing in. The mobile app supports AirPlay for streaming documentaries from iOS devices to compatible Apple TVs. Chromecast options are not available, so listeners relying on Google casting should look elsewhere.

Early Access outside the UK

Eligible paid BBC.com subscribers in the USA and Canada can hear selected Early Access podcast episodes during an early access period. The selection varies, and episodes become available to everyone when that period ends. This is a limited BBC.com subscription benefit, not access to BBC Sounds outside the UK.

Pricing

BBC Sounds is free, with no paid Sounds tier to weigh against its access limits. The BBC app and website provide the listening routes; the mobile app supports podcast downloads, while the service’s UK-only availability remains the central constraint.

BBC.com subscriptions in the USA are separate from BBC Sounds: they cost $8.99 a month or $49.99 for the first year, renewing at $89.99 per year thereafter. Eligible paid subscribers in the USA and Canada receive selected Early Access podcast episodes during the early access period, but the subscription does not restore BBC Sounds access abroad.

Platforms

BBC Sounds supports web browsers and the BBC app on iOS and Android. For web listening, the BBC recommends current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Microsoft Edge. The app requires Android 7.0 or later or iOS 16.1 or later. BBC Help covers technical issues including playback, downloads and account login.

Who it's for

BBC Sounds is the clearest fit for listeners in the UK who want BBC radio and podcasts without paying for a subscription, especially those who value on-demand episodes and offline podcast playback. It is not the right choice for listeners based outside the UK seeking the full BBC Sounds service; international BBC audio is available through BBC.com and the BBC app, with radio availability varying.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free access makes BBC programming available without a subscription for UK listeners.
Pro: Most programmes are on demand, and episode pages show how long each remains available.
Pro: Podcast episode downloads support offline listening in the mobile app.
Con: BBC Sounds is restricted to UK listeners, with only around a month of app use abroad for UK residents.
Con: Offline downloads are for podcast episodes, not all radio programmes.
Con: AirPlay is supported for documentaries from iOS devices, but Chromecast options are unavailable.

Alternatives

For a broader directory of listening software, browse Audio Player Software. If you want a free player with a particular platform mix instead of a UK-restricted BBC service, consider AIMP (Android, Linux and Windows), foobar2000 (Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows), or Music Player Daemon (Android, Linux, macOS and Windows). Audacious, fooyin and Quod Libet are free options for Linux, macOS and Windows users.

Winamp for Artists is a freemium option on web, iOS and Android, with artist-profile plans including Ultra at 12.99 EUR per month, billed monthly. Audirvāna is a paid alternative with a free trial, across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows; its Studio Classic plan is 7.99 USD per month on a monthly subscription.

Verdict

Choose BBC Sounds if you are in the UK and want free access to BBC radio and podcasts, with on-demand programmes and podcast downloads. Its chief advantage is that focused, no-subscription access; its chief reason to look elsewhere is the geographic restriction, compounded by the fact that international BBC audio does not include every radio programme on demand.
