Overview

Transfer Family brings SFTP, FTPS, and FTP transfers, browser access to S3, remote SFTP connectors, and managed AS2 messaging into one service. Files can be stored in Amazon S3 or Amazon EFS, and custom identity providers can apply authentication, authorization, and controls per user. The service supports thousands of concurrent users and transfers involving PCI, PII, or HIPAA-regulated data.

That breadth comes with a bill tied to multiple kinds of activity: enabled protocols, data, messages, workflow processing, connector calls, and web app units. It suits teams that need those capabilities within AWS, but the separate usage dimensions can make costs harder to forecast than a single subscription.

Key features

Protocol endpoints and storage: Managed SFTP, FTPS, and FTP endpoints connect file-transfer clients to S3 or EFS. Servers can span up to three Availability Zones without an additional multi-AZ charge, useful for services that need availability across zones.
Identity and infrastructure controls: Custom identity providers enable per-user authentication and authorization. Resources can be defined and deployed using CloudFormation templates or the Transfer Family Terraform module, which makes the service a better fit for teams already managing AWS infrastructure as code.
Automated processing: Managed workflows automate post-upload file processing and can integrate with AWS B2B Data Interchange and Step Functions for downstream work. They require an SFTP, FTPS, or FTP endpoint and cannot be purchased separately, so they are an add-on to a transfer setup rather than a standalone processing option.
Browser-based S3 access: Authenticated users can access S3 through a web app. Each unit supports up to 250 unique sessions per five-minute period. Uploads and downloads through web apps are not charged as web app data, but S3 requests and bandwidth remain chargeable.
Remote SFTP connectors: Connectors send files to or retrieve them from remote SFTP servers, using S3 as the source or destination. A connector call includes directory listings of up to 1,000 items, while larger operational needs may make call and data-transfer charges important to track.
Managed AS2: AS2 support handles EDI document exchange with trading partners. Messages up to 50 MB are included per message; larger messages are charged per 50 MB chunk.

Pricing

Transfer Family is paid and usage-based, with a free plan. Its published example rates are tied to US East (N. Virginia) where an hourly rate is described; the charges below are expressed as shown in the pricing example, not as flat monthly subscriptions.

Plan or charge	Price	What it covers
SFTP, FTPS, or FTP endpoint	0.30 USD per month	Protocol-enabled server endpoint, billed at $0.30 hourly rate in the US East (N. Virginia) pricing example.
SFTP, FTPS, or FTP data transfer	0.04 USD per month	Usage-based charge for data uploaded and downloaded over SFTP, FTPS, or FTP.
Web app unit	0.50 USD per month	One unit, billed at $0.50 hourly rate in the example, supports 250 unique sessions per five-minute period.
SFTP connector call	0.00 USD per month	Usage-based charge shown for calls to remote SFTP servers.
SFTP connector data transfer	0.40 USD per month	Usage-based charge for data sent or retrieved using connectors.
Workflow data processing	0.10 USD per month	Usage-based charge for data processed by Transfer Family workflow steps.
AWS Transfer Family	Custom pricing	No upfront costs; charges depend on enabled protocols, transferred data, messages, workflows, connector calls, or web app units.

The low endpoint line item is only one part of the cost: data transfer, workflows, connectors, messages, and web app capacity can add charges according to use. That model can suit variable or multi-purpose workloads, but buyers should account for each activity rather than treating the endpoint figure as the total cost.

Platforms

The platform is web, with API access and a web file manager. Its maximum file size is 50 GB. The browser experience is specifically for authenticated access to S3, while protocol endpoints and connectors cover other transfer paths.

Who it's for

Transfer Family is a strong choice for organizations already using AWS storage and infrastructure who need controlled file exchange at scale, partner-facing protocols, browser access, AS2, or automated post-upload processing. Per-user identity controls and support for regulated-data transfers suit environments with access requirements. It is less suitable when the goal is simply to send occasional files without maintaining an AWS endpoint and managing several usage-based charges.

Pros and cons

Pros

Multiple protocols and storage targets: SFTP, FTPS, and FTP can serve different clients while connecting to S3 or EFS.
Scale and access control: Thousands of concurrent users and custom per-user identity controls support larger, managed user populations.
Broader transfer workflows: Browser access, SFTP connectors, AS2, and post-upload workflows cover needs beyond basic endpoint transfers.
Three-zone option without an extra multi-AZ charge: Useful for deployments that need servers across Availability Zones.

Cons

Several usage-based cost drivers: Protocols, transfer volume, messages, processing, connector calls, and web app units can all affect the bill.
Workflows require an endpoint: Buyers cannot use managed workflows as a standalone service.
Web apps do not remove storage costs: S3 requests and bandwidth remain chargeable even though web app uploads and downloads do not incur web app data charges.
Connector listings have a per-call boundary: A call includes a directory listing of up to 1,000 items.

Alternatives

Browse file transfer services to compare other approaches. Choose SFTPGo if you want a freemium option spanning self-hosted and major desktop platforms, with a Tiny plan at 50.00 EUR per month for 25 GiB storage and 250 GiB monthly transfer. SendSafely is an alternative for encrypted file sharing across web, mobile, and desktop platforms; its Basic plan is 10.00 USD per month for 250 MB per month and control expiration. Consider Tresorit for encrypted links and file storage across desktop and mobile platforms.

rclone is the free, open-source option for readers who prefer a free tool with broad platform coverage. ExaVault offers a self-hosted web appliance, with a free plan for up to 50 users. MASV fits pay-as-you-go transfers at 0.25 USD per month, with 15 GB free each month and no contract. pCloud offers a free plan with 10 GB of storage for people seeking a storage-oriented option. Wing FTP Server is another freemium file-transfer server, with a free edition supporting one domain, 10 user accounts per domain, and 10 connections per domain.

Verdict

Choose AWS Transfer Family if your organization needs several managed transfer methods, controlled access, or partner workflows tied to S3 or EFS and already operates in AWS. Its main advantage is bringing those capabilities together with support for large concurrent user populations; its main drawback is a usage-based cost structure that requires planning across multiple charge categories. For straightforward file sharing or a free, self-managed tool, one of the alternatives is likely a better fit.
