Overview

Upload a PDF, EPUB, plain-text document, or scanned pages to create MP3 audio with AI text-to-speech. Automatic chapter detection can skip tables of contents, copyright sections, and indexes, helping produce audio that is easier to navigate than a single uninterrupted reading. OCR also brings scanned PDFs and JPG or PNG book-page photos into the workflow.

Users retain rights to uploaded books and generated audio, while granting a limited license to process files for audio generation. AudioBookByMe says its ACX-ready output can be published to Audible, Apple Books, Google Play, Spotify, and Findaway.

Key features

Voice and pronunciation controls

The catalog has 66 AI voices across eight languages. Voice cloning uses a 10-second sample and supports any accent or language, which may suit authors who want a familiar voice; the Free plan includes one clone trial, while Pro allows up to four clones. A reusable pronunciation dictionary applies word replacements across chapters, a practical tool for recurring names and specialist terms.

Chaptered and ACX-ready output

Generated ACX output uses 44.1 kHz, 192 kbps CBR mono audio normalized to -23 LUFS. Those production specifications make the export relevant to users preparing audiobook files for distribution, while automatic chapter detection and omission of front- and back-matter sections reduce cleanup. Pro adds M4B chaptered downloads; the Free plan offers only watermarked MP3 downloads.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed $0 forever. It allows one audiobook conversion per month, includes 66 voices in eight languages and one free voice-clone trial, and provides watermarked MP3 downloads. That is enough to assess occasional conversions, but the spoken watermark and single-book cap limit its usefulness for regular listening or publishing.

Pro costs 19.99 USD per month, billed $19.99/month. It raises the allowance to three books per month with no time limit, permits up to four voice clones, and adds M4B chaptered downloads, the pronunciation dictionary, and watermarked video export. It is the sensible tier for modest recurring audiobook work, though the three-book quota may constrain heavier production.

Studio costs 39.99 USD per month, billed $39.99/month, and allows ten books per month. It includes everything in Pro plus unwatermarked video export, YouTube-ready 4K video, background music, and custom thumbnails. Choose it for video publishing; its added cost is harder to justify if audiobook files are the only output needed.

Lifetime costs 297.00 USD per once, billed $297 one-time. It offers ten books per month, everything in Pro, unwatermarked video export, all future features, and founding member status. The one-time payment may suit a long-term user who expects to stay within the monthly quota; the recurring Studio plan includes 4K video, background music, and custom thumbnails, which are not included in the Lifetime plan’s stated features.

Platforms

AudioBookByMe runs on the web, so the listed platform is browser-based rather than a desktop or mobile app.

Who it's for

It fits authors converting book-length documents, readers who want scanned material narrated, and creators who value chapter handling, reusable pronunciation corrections, or voice cloning. It is less suited to people who need more than three books monthly on Pro, want an unwatermarked free export, or need a non-web platform.

Pros and cons

Pros: OCR supports scans and page photos, while chapter detection can skip non-narrative sections.
Pros: Voice cloning, eight-language voice selection, and reusable pronunciation corrections offer meaningful narration control.
Pros: ACX-oriented audio specifications and chaptered M4B downloads support audiobook publishing workflows.
Cons: Free use is capped at one conversion monthly and the MP3 carries a spoken watermark.
Cons: Pro permits only three books per month, so frequent conversion requires a higher tier.
Cons: The service is web-only.

Verdict

Choose AudioBookByMe if you need to turn book documents or scans into structured audio and value OCR, pronunciation control, or custom narration. Its most compelling case is the combination of chapter handling and production-oriented exports. Look elsewhere if you need frequent conversions on a free plan, a native mobile app, or an unwatermarked output without moving beyond the free tier.
