Overview

CCH Axcess Practice is practice management software for accounting firms that need to coordinate time capture, billing, payments, and profitability analysis. It is best suited to CPA firm operations and administration teams managing varied engagements; firms that need a public price or a general-purpose tool should look elsewhere.

Key features

Staff can enter time on one screen, use automated clocks, or record time through the CCH Axcess mobile app. Clocks are also accessible from a route sheet and tax return, tying time capture to firm work. That range suits teams with different working patterns, though the product’s firm-management focus may be more than an individual practitioner needs.

Billing supports hourly, fixed-fee, and progress arrangements. Users can create and edit invoices, manage multiple fee agreements, and process batch billing. These options suit firms with varied engagement terms or invoice volumes; buyers seeking a narrower billing tool may not need that breadth.

Supported payment partners can enable a Pay Now button in invoice emails, invoice templates, or the client portal. Payments then appear automatically in Accounts Receivable, connecting collection to the firm’s receivables workflow.

Reporting includes productivity ratios, work-in-progress and accounts-receivable analysis, and profit reports by office or project. These views can help firm leaders examine performance across teams and engagements, rather than relying only on billing totals.

CCH Axcess has open integration APIs for building integrations with its data, and a Marketplace that lists software integrations. The platform is described as cloud-based for work from home, travel, and client visits using a laptop. Customers can also access support, product training, and a My Account portal.

Pricing

CCH Axcess Practice: custom pricing; request a quote. The paid product’s cost must be evaluated with the firm’s requirements in mind, so buyers cannot compare it against a published per-seat price before speaking with sales. The product page also offers product demonstrations.

Platforms

CCH Axcess Practice is available on web, Android, and iOS. Mobile time entry is supported through the CCH Axcess mobile app, while the cloud platform is intended for laptop use across office, home, travel, and client visits.

Who it's for

This is a fit for accounting firms, particularly CPA operations and administration staff, that need time entry, billing, payment handling, and firm-level profitability reporting in one practice-management product. A firm that needs to evaluate security certifications or compliance standards before purchase should confirm those requirements directly, since the product page does not state a product-specific certification or standard.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple billing types, editable invoices, batch billing, and payment posting to Accounts Receivable support a connected billing and collection workflow.
Pros: Productivity, WIP/AR, and office- or project-level profit reports provide several lenses for firm performance analysis.
Cons: Pricing is by quote, which makes early budget comparisons harder.
Cons: The product is built for accounting firm operations; individuals or buyers looking for a simpler standalone time tracker may find its scope excessive.

Alternatives

For a different category of software, compare Accounting Practice Management Software. Firms evaluating tax-focused options can also browse Corporate Tax Software, External Audit Software, Small Business Tax Software, or Tax Preparation Software.

Among the linked products, Alphatax is a paid option with a free trial and web, Windows, and API platforms. Complete Tax Solutions is a paid web and Windows option with pricing by enquiry. CSC Corptax is enterprise corporate tax software with demo-request pricing and a web platform. Corporate Taxprep is a paid Windows product with a free trial; it requires a quote, and its Specialized Information Module and online or DVD tax guide are sold separately.

PowerPlan Tax Provision is a paid web-based alternative. Tax Series is a paid web and API option with a free trial; its fixed licensing fee is based on scope determined during a proof of concept. TaxLab Nucleus is a paid web option. Bloomberg Tax is a paid web suite with contact-sales pricing across tax provision, workpapers, fixed assets, tax research, corporate tax analysis, income tax planning, and payroll research.

Verdict

CCH Axcess Practice is a strong candidate for accounting firms that want flexible time and billing workflows tied to collections and profitability reporting. Its main reason to choose is that breadth across day-to-day practice management; its main reason to look elsewhere is custom pricing, especially if a firm needs a public price to screen options or wants a narrower tool.
